A ship’s crew trying to throw buckets of water overboard while the Halberdier just continues to poke holes in the hull.
I would have thought the most useful unit is the villager.
Hera: It's not viable to micro 20 monks in lategame
Imo the halberdier is one of the main reasons why this game is so fun to play. There's something enjoyable about seeing swarms of cheap units get destroyed easily by most units in the game, and yet the unit is so cheap that both players want to spam it against each other. Even when you lose the game against halberdiers you'll still see kill a bunch of them and it will feel satisfying. As a result it is a good example of a thing that is both fun to play as and fun to play against, something most other games struggle to achieve.
Same story in real life too. Pointy sticks have always been useful in warfare up until the 20th century.
No one believes the answer was not hussar, for Hera.
The best way to realize the usefulness of the halberdier is to have a civ limited to spearmen or pikemen, and be attacked by elephants, paladins or lightcav...
I played a Teuton mirror on Arena once where I went full halb into the enemy's Teutonic knights and won. Yes, my halbs got shredded, but he'd forwarded me with a castle drop early on, and once I'd trebbed that back he only had one or two castles left at home for TTK production, so I just needed to keep throwing halbs into the meat grinder long enough for my trebs to kill his remaining castles and cut off his production. I was also teching into hand cannons behind, but wound up not needing them.
I see that silhouette: "It's Pikachu!".
Halberdier + Siege = Destroying everything
As a Goth player I agree

On the "Halbardier vs gold alternative" front, it's probably even better than you mentioned
Hera, could you do a video second buildings' building order? I'm okayisch on team games, but sometimes its overwhelming how many e.g. stables or other buildings the other players have in comparison to me. I don't even know where they got the resources and time to build so much. When do you build a second, third military building? How many vills to put on that, what to do with them in the meantime? That would be interesting I think.
You can still buy time by "baiting" enemy Champions by your Halbs, but at the end still watch out mostly on enemy's Heavy Scorpions (S/Onagers or normal ones too). Then crush them by any siege weapons/cavs, etc.
Composition "halb-everything" 💪🏼🔥
I'm surprised the synergy with siege ram didn't get a mention here. I've always found siege ram halb to be quite a powerful composition and a good way to spend the trickle of relic gold.
The comedic timing of the halbs looking at the demo after sinking the 3 other ships before deciding to go blow themselves up was golden.
I remember playing Age of Kings as a kid and only having the pikeman and was like damn these are just not that good, then came the Xpac and seeing that Halb tech for the first time was like wow lets go because it is also an imperial age tech, such a good unit. Favorite Civ bonus for Halbs is the Bohemysss, very close 2nd Lithuanyss
I imagine Skirmishers fall off so hard because they do not have a generic imp upgrade.
