  • In Japan, it is more common to bow instead of shaking hands.
    We are taught to do so since childhood to show respect to others.

    In Thailand you get extra points for hitting someone on a zebra crossing.

      Almost got run over when crossing the road for the first time in Thailand. Growing up in Sweden you just walk out on a zebra crossing knowing that the car will stop. In Thailand the safest way is to find some locals crossing the road and just follow them closely.

It makes the person who did good a little more likely to do it again later and any observers who wouldn’t have done the same may consider doing it next time.

      Exactly the same in the UK. If a car stops for you you either look at them and lift your hand slightly, or simply walk across but raise your hand up from your hip a little. I have no idea how that became a sign of "thank you", but everyone understands it.
      Kind of similar how cars will raise their fingers on the steering wheel towards you if you let a car pass, or stand by the side of the road and signal it to go on and not stop for you. Basically everyone responds with some kind of gesture of thanks.

      in the Netherlands we only wave to the driver if the driver technically has the right of way but still allow us to go first.
      This is more common when cyclying than when walking though. As in general pedestrians always have the right of way (if they cross as a correct crossing).
      If we cross at a zebra crossing, or a cycle path with priority and have the right of way, we generally do not thank the driver. As well, it's our turn to go.
      Though, I think the Netherlands is the only country in the world where there are routes where cyclists have priority. Maybe also Denmark.

    • @MyDogIsYoshi
      @MyDogIsYoshi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +77

      @solo xi In all of the ways in which California may be ahead, there are several ways the state is not. For some reason, they think raising minimum wage will pull people out of poverty. For the first paycheck, perhaps. Once their overpriced rent increases, the electricity becomes more expensive, and food prices raise, they're back in that hole. People are paid more for the same work. Where does that extra money get subsidized? If there were an adjustment to the cost of living, then I believe the state would be ahead. It's a gorgeous state, but the residents are essentially paying for the weather.
      Also, unrelated but, the gasoline in California is actually different than most states. It has a higher octane rating.

    I live in Japan, it's true that Japanese are very polite, and those kids especially, but it may not be that common for a car in Japan to stop to let people cross the street unless that's a crossing with traffic lights or there is a lot of traffic. I think that's why they thank the car very politely (usually they may wave their hands or nod a bit but not bow like this).
    Edit : Apparently this is the law in Japan to stop when someone approaches a zebra crossing and not only step in as I thought so I was wrong as some people pointed out. My mistake, sorry. A lot of zebra crossing are accompanied by traffic lights around for the vehicles so I wasn't aware of how it is when there is no traffic light like in this video. Those kids are just very polite.

    I love Japan and visited Tokyo 6 years ago. I was astonished by their politeness and adherence to the smallest of rules. I was in Shinjuku around 10pm and was crossing the street in a rather empty area. There were no cars on the Street so I crossed while the light was green (which I always do in NYC). I looked back and saw 3 Japanese patiently waiting for the light to turn red and crossing sign to flash "walk" before crossing.
