This bird was born to fly and a beauty she is, high in the sky or skimming through the grass, and the accompanying music is perfect. I love your smiles when you catch your planes, it is obvious you thoroughly enjoy each and every one ! Kudo’s to your wife as well, she is an excellent videographer. You two complement each other. This was a beautiful day at a beautiful location so close to home. Enjoy what y’all do ! Larry DeSoto
'Couldn't even finish watching the video before I had to find the plans, was that a power plane & you converted it to a glider? The lines on that thing....they're so beautiful. The rudder, the wings, the nose, the canopy, it all works!
CluelessBeeKeeping thank you and yes, it’s a converted Southerner 84 powered freeflight design. I built it from the start as a glider and it seems to work really well.
Your love for flying is truly manifested .... "Hats Off" is an old term and not enough "Hats Off and Pants Off" is about right ... (todays language permits that in a politically correct sense without labeling anybody ...its truly the thought that counts LOL)
Is it difficult to learn to fly a model glider like this? It’s on my list of TTDBID, being of 7 decades behind me now. This one seems to have only rudder and flaps, not ailerons on the wings.
Josephine Bennington yes, this one is rudder and elevator only. Having no ailerons keeps it simple and light (and easier to fly in light winds) It can be hard to learn to fly on your own, but not too difficult if someone can teach you the basics.
Gudrun Kirchert Hi there, I built it from plans downloaded for free from Outerzone website. However, the plans are for a powered model with polyhedral wings. I redesigned the nose so that it flies as a glider. I hope that helps.
Yes, Nice Relaxing flying you know that spot so well and you have your own style of flying which complements the flying so well. I admire the way you catch your models and often wonder how you do it. Having watched this one i can see you catch it on a stall .Although you missed it a couple of times on this video. Do you measure the wind speed and keep a record of which model flies well in which air speed.
Stephen Jones i normally just look out of the window and guess the wind speed. The flying slope is only a short walk from home so I can soon nip back and get a different model if needs be.
Hello John, Another great video, I'm trying to figure out this bird though. Is that a Southerner 60 under there somewhere? The Southerner 60 that I remember was a powered free flight bird with landing gear. I keep looking at the undeniably bad drawing that I have and imagining it with no motor and no wheels. It does look very much like the star of your video here, at least in my feeble old mind...
It does indeed, and better yet, it looks great doing it! I'm really enjoying watching you build and fly these old free flight designs. They've got a certain grace and presence that the newer designs just somehow missed. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy watching your JART blazing across the hillside. I guess I just enjoy the "Hair on Fire" a little less these days. Probably has something to do with not having that much hair left to burn . . .
flymrc77 there is no easy way really. I used the cheap Hobbyking covering and it seems to stick much better than Solarfilm. Having capping strips on the ribs gives it a bigger area to stick to.

By far one of my favorite things to watch on TH-cam! RC gliders as pets!

Hi John, very nice plane. Do you know where to get the plan of the model? Greetings from Vienna, Gudrun

I live in Bodmin and fly mostly at St Agnes and power at Truro and District model flying club.
Carl Grobler I do go to StAgnes occasionally but this slope is just a short walk from home so I don’t need to take the car.
Hello, Nice build!! What airfoil do you use in your slow fly models like this one?
Mateus De Paula thank you. It’s an undercamber wing section as shown on the original plan. I’m not sure what it’s called.

Bob McBride yes, it started life as an enlarged Southerner 60. It flies great as a glider!

Hey John, any tips for sticking film to an under-cambered wing, please? Don't say 'one rib at a time' : )

Appreciated, many thanks for the reply : )
must be a fair amount of lead in that nose?.
wavy davy is actually not too bad. Because it has a large lifting tail, the CofG is way back on the wing.
