I vary. I have fingernails but I can't either rub the strings to get a soft sound or hook my fingers to engage the nail and it gives that sharpness. I usually do that on quarter notes. And sometimes I'll hook a random string to emphasize a certain note

on ukulele & Irish tenor banjo I keep my picking fingers with nails just long enough to hook the strings...longer & they break at work. with that medium to short nail length you can still make the " chuck" strum sound...longer & they get in the way 😮
I would bet it happened in reverse - he trimmed his fingernails specifically to make the third part of this video, and probably started growing them back as soon as it was uploaded. A lot of guitarists, especially guitarists who play classical and flamenco, keep the nails on their picking/strumming hand carefully manicured to about 1/4” past the tips of their fingers and shaped so they taper slightly - and I don’t mean, like, for a gig or two, one of my old band mates has been getting his picking hand manicured every other week since he was about 14(we’re in our 30s now) to keep his nails in pristine condition. It provides the most utility because you can play with your fingernails for that classic bright plectrum(pick) sound while maintaining the flexibility of playing fingerstyle; you can switch back and forth between your nails and the pads of your fingers/thumb to alternate between brighter(nails) and warmer(pads) tones a lot easier than you can switch between a pick and your fingers; hell, they make fingerpicks now shaped exactly like a well-manicured nail for those folks who either can’t keep the nails on their picking/strumming hand long(like me, I’m a line cook, long nails a significant no-no in the kitchen for obvious reasons) or have weak fingernails that can’t handle the repeated stress of plucking strings.
Yeah i feel like finger picking isn’t very good for rock for that reason. That and it doesn’t have the same attack that a pick has, it feels to subdued/passive. I know dire straits uses finger picking but i also don’t think they’re very good 😅
The attack is very different. Fingers has some kind of muffled sound, nails has some flexibility which muffle a bit the sound, and picks are made for it and so does not muffle.
Básicamente estás diciendo que los dedos suenan como dedos y la púa suena como púa y las uñas suenan como uñas. Solo que de una forma que parezca complicado
The fingers are soft for a warm tone, the pick is for a sharp and brighter tone. I think the word id use for the fingernails is colorful just because its like a mix of the other two.
The *Pick* is more sharp sounding, and really bounces and emphasizes each string. The *Finger* gives a rounder, and mellow type sound. Less sharp vibrations. *Fingernails* is a mix between the two. Its sharp, bouncy, emphasizes each string played while maintaining somewhat of a round and soft tone to it.
As someone who doesn't play guitar but enjoys it, I didn't really understand the difference. This brings so much clarity and shows the beauty of each style! Thank you for all your effort.
It gets incredibly mellow with the fingers... I love it so much! I always felt the pick gave me a too metallic sound, now I know why and what I was looking for
They were actually designed to sound like picks made of tortoise shell due to an international ban on tortoise shell. This is the reason for the name "tortex". You are partially correct though, as tortoise shells are made from basically the same thing as our nails, keratin.
