an open question to Christians from an outsider trying to understand theology: why did the orthodox and catholic church split over filioque and what is the significance of it? as far as i understood, the trinity is meant to explain in an ambiguous way the indescribable nature of God which humans cant comprehend, but the son, father and holy spirit are all but different manifestations of the same God, isnt that right or have i fallen under certain heresies ? hence, why do interpretations like filioque matter that much?

an open question to Christians from an outsider trying to understand theology:
why did the orthodox and catholic church split over filioque and what is the significance of it?
as far as i understood, the trinity is meant to explain in an ambiguous way the indescribable nature of God which humans cant comprehend, but the son, father and holy spirit are all but different manifestations of the same God, isnt that right or have i fallen under certain heresies ?
hence, why do interpretations like filioque matter that much?
Well, to answer the question on why the two churches, who both still view each other as valid, split from the filoque, the answer I've received is that it was mainly other divisions in the church that caused the separation, but this was one of the final blows. The Orthodox did not approve of the pope making the change without approval from the other bishops. I don't think I know enough about the other question you asked to answer it correctly.
