You should learn to draw first. @@satellite5216 shes definetly not using a mouse to draw, its a pen tablet. but regardless, it comes down to understanding how light hits a surface, what colors it illuminates, what remains in the shadow. to do this you must get your pencil, and paper start sketching and learn to see what you are drawing. and just keep googling stuff like perspective, lighting, color etc. lots of good information on there. One more thing is if you're always used a pencil then swithc it up, draw with markers, paints, pens or even mud.. this helps you start thinking of how to draw in the style of media which is what gives a digital painting its allure because the artist is somehow aware of paints and how they work, water colors is a great start. enjoy the process it takes a while but if you like drawing eventually it becomes habit and you make that into a career. or enjoy it for relaxation.

I use a vary of brushes but they're all default photoshop brushes, I mainly use the the default hard round brush with the transfer option ticked in the brush settings, then during mid point, since I'm into the texture look lately I also tick the 'texture' option in the brush settings. After that I just pick and choose random brushes based on their texture and seeing what I like and don't like. It's really just experimental, I'm still learning myself but my favourite brush is the basic hard round brush ^-^
