For two weeks in April 2021, trainset 2 returned to the Boston / Rhode Island area for a bout of representative route testing between Providence and Westerly. Here is a compilation of testing action, in no particular chronological or locational order. Enjoy, and be sure to keep an eye out for tilting action =)
Non-Avelia action: • Amtrak Northeast Corri...
The train went back to Philadelphia on Friday, 4/16.
Ok the last run taken from across the lake was beautiful!
Very nice!, but that horn!, AAAAAACCCCCCKKKKKK! A kids bicycle horn sounds way better!
Indeed.
I think its wonderful that when the engineer spots a photographer, he toots the horn to them! Good community relations!!!!
And it blinks even @ 08:42!
Ya
I’m surprised they can see them too going fast
I agree with you on that one!
I love how often they salute you with the horn when they pass 😂 gotta love a friendly driver.
Many thanks for this great acela video! i hope that the high-speed lines in the United States will be expanded in such a way that you can comfortably drive from New York City via Allentown, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Indianapolis to Chicago without traffic jams directly into the city center
Welcome in the XXth century Murica !
Greetings from France !
Lol, thanks for these beautiful trains!
Just an FYI, we have had electrified high speed service on the NEC since the days of the Pennsylvania Railroad, which built the NEC. This new unit is undergoing testing. To me tho, it won’t replace the Acela which looked and matched in design much better. The people at Alstrom are morons. These designs are not at all seamless nor matching in streamlining. The locomotive has one of the ugliest designs for high speed rail service. The European designs are much more streamlined and faster… I hope AMTRAK orders a redesign, this is an embarrassment of design…
@@arun120977 isn’t the USA leading in Covid cases...
Not as a percentage of total population.
@@arun120977 Literally all of the world is experiencing a recession, the covid vaccinations are in shortage in most of the world so it's quite disgusting of you to laugh about it.
The lake reflection was awesome!
I’m glad Amtrak is doing something nice with their train exteriors and not just boring sheet metal with some streaks of blue.
it is not Amtrak which built these tgv it is Alstom a French company and it is the same for the old acela
That would be cool if they got the new Acela trains but also upgraded the Older Acela trains so there could be more of them in service.
old will be sold somewhere else :)
It'd be cool to have both the 3:19 clip and the last lake view clip in 1 video. Great for sharing on rail discussions.
I really hope that after the infrastructure changes, this new train will actually maintain higher speeds though out the entire DC to Boston journey, and not just Conn and R.I.😫
They're so much quieter compared to Acela! Wish they would have put K5LAs on them instead of the Euro horn though. The Acela sounds more beefy when it blows its horn 😁
Very promising to see this. Is this train running on new dedicated tracks? Finally, to see a train run that fast in the USA if very refreshing. Still, not competitive to the better HSR systems around the world, but it's a huge step in the right direction. Great video.
Sadly these trains aren’t gonna run on their own HS lines but they will be run on upgraded lines which will cut around 1 hour on the DC to Boston trip
Always wondered why the power cars never tilted, not so much for comfort, bur for weight distribution. They’re really heavy, and having that further in would lower rail stress and reduce rollover risk
The wheels don't care what the suspended body is doing. Tilting is only for passenger comfort, not for tracking. The slight shift in CG to the outside rail would actually be detrimental. And don't forget, the track is superelevated anyway.
Hey Fan Railer, quick question. How common/rare are Avelia Liberty's? I know Amtrak has started replacing the old Acela train sets, but how many Avelia Liberty's are there?
They’re not in service yet. I think this same set has been doing all the testing in the NEC
There’s three now, 2 in hornell rn and 1 on the corridor
I would be missing the older Acela. Avelia's face looks like a character from "Monsters, Inc".
Very Fast Amtrak’s! Great Catches!
Why won't Amtrak also add the New Acela 21 to their other cross country routes, such as Empire Builder, etc?
….. nothing outside of the northeast corridor is electrified, or set up for high speed operations, or have high level platforms, or are Amtrak owned.
Where am I? The NEC or Europe? The new Avelia trainsets are GORGEOUS! I ❤️'d riding the Bombardier trainsets back when Acela first introduced them, because (at that time back in 2000 anyway), they were the fastest (and most Euro-similiar) thing going. Now? These BLOW them out of the water! AH-MAHZING! 😍
I came from the: "NE Regional & Metro North" generation, SO, it was REALLY interesting to see the evolution in the NEC.
And that last shot WAS REALLY STUNNING! 👍👍👍👍
The current Acela seats are way more comfortable than the new ones.
@@FFred-us9twactually the avelia liberty will provide more services then the original Acelas
Hi-Lo air horn on a train is rare. I thought I was in the UK.
I hope they will keep the signature Amtrak horn that was on the former Acela
Great catch of this highly south-after high speed train! The future is here.
Like being in Europe watching trains 30 years ago, the Chinese must be cracking a rib laughing. 😂
The new trains in france look likes these trains. tho.
The horn to me sounds like a warning alarm because if i heard that at night i would be terrified
it atleast doesn't need to wake up an entire town because it is much safer on the NEC because there are nearly no crossings that is why the horn is like this
Well isn't that what a horn's supposed to do?
Amazing footage! What camera do you use?
Seen this train down in Newark Delaware the other day.
It’s cool to see them test and all but when are these entering revenue service? It seems like the launch date keeps getting pushed back. It was supposed to be 2021 but Wikipedia now says 2022. Anyone have a projected date?
Probably someone is messing around it's gonne be in service 2021 October
2:05 I would love this house! It looks just like mine but I’m in Chicago not Rhode Island (maybe that’s for the better)
I prefer old Acela if they could have kept it and modified it. Looks better flying by...
If the train passes you in under 3 seconds, it's breaking 160 mph.
3:18 I looks away for 2 seconds, and not kidding I thought the train went into reverse lol
If Amtrak decides to retire their P40DC’s I’ll legit just be sad because the P40’s were my childhood, it would be better if these new engines of Acela and Amtrak had K5LA’s, then it would be better.
Wow, Amazing vid!
5:58 Now you know why God made step ladders. Very handy.
Yeah but the fence isnt his property
It would be tresspassing
It's a step in the right direction. :-)
Awesome video
I'm very surprised to see only one door per car, for entrance and exit. Won't this be a cluster at busy times?
This is an intercity high speed rail train with reservation-only seating, not mass transit. You concern is not an issue.
I’m disappointed that the horn is not traditional anymore.
It’s still 20+ years behind…. Meanwhile over seas they practically fly….
In France and the UK the fastest trains are still under 200 MPH. so its a difference of less than 40 MPH.
@@FFred-us9tw ya idk what people talk about, they aren’t much faster. The fastest ones are only about 40 mph, but many of them overseas operate at these speeds. The only think that’s necessary is the rail infrastructure so it can sustain these speeds here in US
Not really
Awsome video of the aclea avelia liberty i like the horn
Great video 👍
Why couldn't they keep the current Acela Express horn with new train???
because when they ordered the trains from France they didn't think to change the whistle
Someone should add this too transport fever 2.
Gorgeous shots! Does anyone know why it only runs with one pantograph up? Is it only using one locomotive?
It’s better using one than two in order to maintain contact with the catenary, and the power is distributed to both power cars
How come the pantographs are on the non driving end?
This new set runs with only one pantograph during normal operation.
Great video and the Liberty looks great too. Is it only the coaches that tilt, as at 7:40, it looks like the power cars are leaning in with the cant of the curve, but the coaches are either upright or somehow tilting contrary to the curve? I guess that is all part of the testing. The only slight disappointment is the horn sounds French, not American- and I say that as a European! I could really do with a nice US blare like the current Acela units.
The train is not travelling fast enough at 7:40 to be tilting.
I've seen comments on many vids regarding the horn and how people hate it. However when you hear the new vs the old next to each other there is a clear difference in how well you can hear the horn. The new one is much more easily heard by itself, and over background noise. I think this would be an advantage, and why the new horn was adopted. Especially for fast speeds it would warn people farther and quicker.
Its horn is more like GB sounds than French
French horn is a little bit different, try to search on YT "French TGV horn", you'll hear the difference
Welcome USA to "real" high speed world
It’s a french train
Acela 21 looks like the eurostar class 373 which is the eurostar e300
Great video! will they run 165 mph in service runs once it opens?
quite sure not in nj with a lot of njt trains maybe a touch faster than the old acela
They’ve been testing 165, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll go that fast in service
They should go that fast in service ... why have the capability and not use it when you can .
About 183 to 200
160 mph max revenue service speed.
3:18 why do i hear an ambulance??
That was the train
😂
@@kansasstatealerting2874 it's a joke smh
@@ROTE yeah its a joke
It's an european horn
I don’t understand why the power units don’t have the same side shape as the coaches
Power units are derived from French Alstom tgv ng
and the coaches are made with us standards
i would be satisfied with this if we didn't get the current high-speed rail being built in california
And the horn actually sounds European unlike those awful loud typical American train horns
That Rhode Island section is the best, 150mph and racing through the trees. I don’t like the new livery! Too standard, R W and blue, no imagination. I’ll miss the current train set but not the awful seats and tray tables 🙃
3:20 sounds like a European siren and I was confused there for a minute
it's because it's a french train
At 2x speed he’s going 330
Good job.
First shots more like 85 not 165
3:18
The horn ain’t a Nathan K5LA On The new acela
like train
Here for the horn comments...😂😂
Ok. America has high speed trains now.
Do You know how to make them faster?
1. Lower the OHLE
2. Ban freight trains from using NEC or ban excessive height container transport (1 container per well car)
Congratulations, now You can enjoy steadier panto, which adds up to higher speeds
Hell no
We cant just ban them off the corridor
If we do that, it would screw up the freight system in new england and our cargo orders and shipments would be destroyed
If you ban fright trains you won't get your stupid make-up at Walmart.
Very nice.
The horn is funny
I cannot wait to ride this in the next couple years. FINALLY we have something slightly approaching the great fast trains of the world. At least they are true high speed trains.
LOL They are as fast than the normal InterCity Trains in Germany which we have here since 1985
These across are also only in the northeast corridor while most other countries have national highspeed trains
Acela I mean

Yes, fine designs, these trains.
Yup thanks to the French company Alstom making these avelia liberty
I worked on this project! Yey!

@@neddierex Lol every acela video someone says this. But yes please do.
Wow that's incredible!

@@neddierex pls gosh no this is perfect
I am so looking forward to riding one of these. I rode the TGV Eurostar from London to Paris 21 years ago on my honeymoon. It was fantastic. It bewilders me that only now are we actually going to get REAL high-speed trains, at least on the NE corridor if not anywhere else anytime soon.
Nice that you are getting HST units. But you guys are going to need some HST track to use these trains as intended.
There will be one, between LA and Vegas, in the next 5 years or so. If the stupid NIMBYs in Texas will ever acquiesce, Texas will have a Shinkansen, between Dallas and Houston.
@frglee Amtrak has been upgrading the rails to handle the new Avelia trainsets for 160mph+ service. The new rails are only in the NE Corridor. However, Amtrak does own a set of tracks between Chicago and Detroit that they have the diesel 'Wolverine' service running at 110mph. I wouldn't be suprised if Amtrak extended the Acela service to Detroit and Chicago on those rails.
8:55 that's gotta be the most impressive train following I've ever seen. How the crap did you keep it in the frame!?
Thanks. Years of experience and a relatively steady hand.
@@FanRailer And slow speeds of the train.
Very good trainspotting action! I think that, besides its stunning desing, we are slowly coming to appreciate its wonderful aerodynamic sounds at high speeds...definitely reminds me of the good old class 373 Eurostars when passing at high speeds. May i ask, how are things going in terms of their production?
Αντε και στα δικά μας, μπας και μπει επιέλους σε υπηρεσία το 470...
So far three trainsets have been produced, trainsets 1 and 3 are in hornell right now getting their interiors installed and set 2 is still testing on the corridor, as of right now 2 is up in Boston
@@froztytrainfilms9148 How man more sets are due and when are they planned to start commercial use? Also whats the story with the line upgrade to allow for a "higher" speed route
@@stephendoherty8291 Amtrak has ordered 28 Avelia Liberty from Alstom
Heard more of the new one with that euopean horn but the old one is just EPIC!
I love how at minute 5:01 the train makes this wooshing clicking sound. This machines are so amazing! I can’t wait for my next Acela trip. It’s just such a jaw dropping experience. It feels like if I were standing on the sideline my soul would just get spooked and jump out of my body while I stand there with my jaw opened wide!
Am I the only one who finds it amazing that that the Avelia liberty HAS A FRICKING TWO TONE HORN?!?
Maybe
It's electronic and it's a bitch to replace XD
It sounded like an european horn
Plus, this horn is used on european countries like france, uk, and other countries
It's a European sound.
3:17 thats the speed we want.
8:43 I love this, the train going by and then the camera flip at the end.
Yeah hes good at catching it at the end with the flip
I have (we, wife and I) been to Germany 4 times, and it is so much fun to ride the ICE trains. Their high speed trains and those of France , TGV are really sharp looking, fast and quiet, too.
That's why the Alvelia is made by Alstom .
Like a good neighbor, Alstom is there.
D W. 675 I've Seen On TH-cam In Europe Those Train's Travel At Very Meaning High Speed 200 miles per Hour And Faster 300/ 400. And In Japan Even Faster
European trains can run up to 289mph. Definitely way better than here by a long shot. And Maglev trains in China and Japan are pushing close to 400mph. Our country is behind everyone. It's pathetic
Scary how unprotected the tracks are in the US.
Freedom
It's America. "Land of the free, land of god, guns and country". If there is any kind of danger here, it is eradicated by shooting the train with a 9mm
In a lot of places in the USA, there is no need for protection because the tracks are so far away from any roads, towns, or people. In the cities there usually is some form of fence or wall. But the stations, even the largest ones, have ZERO security measures what so ever. They may have a random security guard walking around but there are no baggage inspections or metal detectors or stuff like that.
@@trevordavis9390 What about animals like bears, birds, etc?
Also, this train will mainly circulate on the North-Eastern US coast, where tracks often cross villages and roads

The cat poles kind of obstruct the view from that angle. When you're given the option of an unobstructed shot from the platform, regardless of the lighting situation, that shot is preferred.

Great video, and I loved the various clips of the original and new Acela trainsets. I still think the original looks better, but nobody can deny 20 years has gone by and the new trainsets are going to be a significant step forward.
Hopefully the lines can update their tracks to allow faster operating speeds, then you’ll have true high speed rail!

Its time for a communist (socialist) revolution!!! And also get them refugees (Syrian, Iraqi, Yemeni, Afghan and Ukrainian) and put them in the midwest usa.
Notice they are testing different speeds and pantograph adhesion to overhead due to oscillation. Leading vs trailing pans
Those are some amazing camera skills.
I love seeing fast American trains. We have no excuse not to be as good as our Asian and European counterparts.
