This is simply sensational! Thank you. I was at this game-one of my favourite of all time. This was footy at its absolute best. Pace, skill, tough and non stop ball movement.

Absolutely stunning game this. Like someone else makes mention I was there that day. To date the only AF.L./V.F.L. final I have witnessed first hand. So many things as I watch this. Who was it grabbing Malcolm Blight by the legs - giving away what we used call a professional free kick in order to stop North Melbourne's run on. Have to look again. Indebted to whoever uploaded this. Brilliant.

So much loved this era, no issue with jumper clash for me, all you need is different shorts, nowadays there changing things every minute.

Thank goodness the scoreboard is shown throughout footy telecasts these days. Very frustrating only seeing the scores briefly after goals were kicked!

Watching football telecasts today and even games from the 2000s after the sport had been remade on the terms of television and basketball, I actually find constantly seeing the scores a mild interference.

In the days of analogue tv where the picture at home vould have more snow than Buller yet we could still tell the difference between the Pies and Roos jumpers. People must have lost brain cells when we went digital and needed different jumpers

Where do you get the footage? From deceased Toorak estates that had VHS in the 70's? Love it!!!

Any wonder why the VFL became a national competition? Because of the Winners program that was televised all over Australia on the ABC, reached out to so many viewers across the country in the 70s & 80s. It was a major example of the VFL being so popular across Australia that made the VFL think it had to go national in the long term. And eventually it did. The Winners & State of Origin football had an important role in the VFL competition eventually expanding interstate in the 1980s.

Packer got into Cricket cos he could see the motza to be made from Advertising - all the stuff about " Victoria not being big enough for 12 Teams" was said to soften people to the inevitability of Clubs being Stalinized...cue a decade or so on and we have games from and to tv markets on both Saturday and Sunday...even games from thugby States...

Pre-1987 TV promotion was not why the VFL had to go national. Rather it was Australian Rulesʼ inability to compete on television with the shorter and more easily televised sport of basketball, whose growth was avidly promoted by television at the expense of football. By 1985, every Australian Rules competition was undergoing massive losses - the VFA and the WAFL were suffering much worse still than the VFL while lesser competitions were probably suffering just as badly - that could not have been foreseen even in 1979 just before the NBA and NBL entered their great period of growth.

Modern footy players need to watch Blights technique when having a set shot for goal at 23:27. Text Book.

i so remember 1979 , I was walking with my mate and he said Collingwood have thrashed North , and i said , yeah but they been going at 95%all year Carlton's been goin at 80%, we'll life 20%where as Collingwood only have what they have , we'll beat em solidly , but not the footy gods , the great equaliser RAIN , but Carlton did that bit more like Harmes ran down his own kick 50plus meters , kept the ball in play and Sheldon was just where he should have been ,it was those little things is why Carlton win a game they should of won by 5 goals , unstead if 5pts, why , The great George Harris said " whats better than beating Collingwood by 10 goals , beating them by 5pts. GO BLUES RARARA

Why would you have Russell Ebert on the last line of defence in such a big game??? What a waste of one of one of the best midfielders to ever play the game.

love the way the coppers run out to monitor the crowd after a goal is kicked at 26'55', ball theft was rampant in those days!!!

What horseshit. Both Martin and Swan would've been just fine in that era and would've loved the rough stuff, just they're not allowed to do it in this current era.

Shocking umpiring, talk about bias for Collingwood, you would think in big games they would be at their best, probably 4_5 goals to Collin good thx to poor umpiring.
    Glad they lost the flag.
