Autumn Wonders To put binding on www.ilovetomakequilts.com/autumn-wonders.html
I always think it's helpful when a pattern tells you what size the units should be. I can do the math, but it's another opportunity for error!
I love/appreciate it so much when a pattern gives the measurements you should have at the end of each step!
I am so happy that you decided to remake the tree blocks for the charity quilt. The light blue triangles just mooshed into the background. Designer eye for the win. ❤ you teach us so much.
I love the idea of black yellow and gray quits. Bees for sure! That’s going on my list.
Love Hazel’s pumpkin with the face, in the spooky parade. Glad you are remaking the two trees, the light blue blended in too much on the gray, but would make 2 great pillows on their own. Instead of white I thought the dark blue would look really nice.
No cow quilts but back in the early 90s I had over 300 decorations of 🐄 cows in my kitchen
What a hoot
Me too!
I didn’t have cows, I had geese everywhere. 😂
My last name is Holstein, so I have collected cow stuff since I married my husband. I haven’t made a cow quilt yet, but I did get a really cute cow quilt pattern, Annabelle by Cotton and Joy patterns.
I am just finishing the FQS mystery BOM, When I started this quilt, I decided to go for accuracy & I've been trying to remember to stop & measure each unit before I finish the block. It has made a big difference in my blocks & well worth the extra effort to do it.
Crisp chocolate chip cookie with nuts. For the win 🏆
Tip for white on white...get one of the small black light flashlights...the right side of printed side of the fabric the pattern glows, the back side does not.
Someone posted a picture of black paper that they use to determine front and back of white on white fabric. I thought that was great idea. I got some of white on white backwards on my liberty box quilt.
The black light flashlight was added to my quilting supplies a couple of weeks ago and has already been worth the purchase price! Was inexpensive on Amazon.
It’s a great tool. I take it with me when I go fabric shopping and do piecing. I suggested the quilt store buy one for customer use. They were not interested. Oh, well.
@@fluffylee41your ahead of the curve! 😁👍
Blacklight is an awesome tool. Will always have one close!@@tonistevens2253
Yep, a remake is a must. Thought so when I first saw the blue trees but didn’t want to burst your bubble. Even a few white points as highlights may have worked.
Measuring in between is really helping me - especially with anything like an HST or snowballed corner. The size might be right but it's wonky ... Tedious but I'm trying to learn it's really making the final assembly (my least favorite part!) go so much smoother.
Maybe cause im Canadian but Maple cookies shaped like our leaf! Even opening the box, deep breathe , heavenly 😋🩷
I’m so glad you changed to the white trees.
I learned several years ago from you to measure after each step. That was a HUGE game changer for me as I was really struggling at that point. Now when I get patterns that don't give the measurements for each step, I have to figure that and add it to the pattern. Thank you so much for your help.
I really need to do that as well. I've been lazy about it and get frustrated with inconsistent results!
Lovely show today. Always inspiring. Thank you for sharing your time. 😀🇨🇦☕️❤️
I am a sugar cookie lover. I found some at Harris Teeter that are my personal favorites. So much fun to make them at Christmas.
Today I will return to quilting a large quilt on my domestic machine and pick the next quilt to sandwich. My summer goal is to get those flimsies completed!
I think your quilt is beautiful. But when things bother you that much, to do the "remake" is so worth it. You'll be glad you made the extra effort!
Awhhh.. 😢 Sorry about the tree blocks. But I agree with your choice! Watching from afar I thought the light blue hard to see. I thought the darker blue would be better, but the white is perfect! 😅 These "remake" choices are hard, but it brings us joy in the end when the quilt is what we want! Love your videos! ❤🥰
Living in NC near the Old Salem Moravian area, my favorite cookie will forever be the Moravian Sugar cookies and the thin Molasses cookies💕💕
I just wanted to thank you, Pat, for your video on spray basting in the house. Because the can says to spray from 12 away, I really feared overspray, but I tried spraying it your way, and then pressing, and it worked a treat! These are the priceless little tidbits that make quilting an even more fascinating and satisfying craft.
I'm so glad it helped you!
I like to use a larger ruler when I square up my blocks also. I feel I have better control of the ruler. My sisters prefer to use a ruler the size of the block! When I started quilting there wasn't the variety of sizes for rulers available. I love patterns that include the block size for each unit/step, it really helps my accuracy.
😂 Many moons ago I made a cow quilt with different cow 🐄 fabrics with tiny cow bells around their necks for my guild auction.
Someone commented why would I make a cow quilt. Who will bid on it?
Well it was popular with multiple bids and raised a nice sum for the guild. I looked over at the member and said their is always a buyer for everything. 😁🤣
🐄🐄🐄
And I have two favorite cookies.
Italian sesame cookies and biscotti. Yum!
You are so right about messier as you go. My cutting is not always perfect nor is my seam. I have done so much better with measuring each unit
Great reminder to square up my blocks as I build the layers. I get to where I don't do this often enough & then, wham. I'm pulling out the seam ripper. Yuk!
The white tree is so much better! Sometimes you just have to do it. I make a soft sour cream sugar cookie that I love.
Agree that the tree needed something. So frustrating to move backwards. This is how I used to end up with UFOs, but now I set a time to tackle these things. Since I have been using my Accuquilt for HSTs, flying geese, and other angled units, my piecing precision is almost spot on. My finished blocks sometimes have a corner edge that is a hair off because I had a slightly imprecise seam but overall I am super pleased. I use the Accuquilt to cut sew and flips whenever I can as well. WAY more accurate for me, plus no more than one extra triangle to trim away, and sometimes I can Accuquilt cut the base unit as well.
Also, I've collected all my fabrics for the spooky & sweet quilt along & have gotten all my blocks done, except one for the garden qal.
The parade today, another super one , had lots of cute little twists to personalize. Im thinking Eddie's hair needs to be higher 😂. I liked the version with the stems instead of handles...except the one where she made the handle using all the same stripe. 👍🩷💜🧡 The binding quilt one of my favorites from the recent past. It looks like you have enough backing to bring to the from style. Time saver Pat! For anyone following Wipgo by Jessie Marie my Zinger quilt came up! Ill be starting that this month only making a purple zinger!☺️
That’s what I like about your patterns and the ones from FQS. The measurements for each step. 🎉
❤ For why don’t white fabrics use a small black light flashlight that can be picked up from the hardware store for about $10. It shows up the print side very clearly and make the backside just look solid. It truly helped me especially at night when I’m sewing because I can’t sleep. Improved my wine and white blocks 100%.
Omg my hubby and boys love sugar cookies lol.
Hi Pat. Hope you have a good evening.
Ghost parade is awesome!
I always measure and trim. You are so right about the little strips adding to big differences in the finished size. Love your show. Starts my morning off right…
I have always measured each part of every block and when I do that they always come out the right size.!
My favorite cookie to make is white chocolate macadamia nut
I understand wanting to redo a block. I am finally finishing a BOM from 2009 and don’t like some of the fabrics. Back then I thought I would get in trouble if I switched out some of the fabrics! Who knew! I am going to look through my stash and redo a few of the blocks. Wish I had bought some extra background fabric though.😢
Im so glad you changed your trees in the Make a Wish Quilt! I agree 100 %…… I also felt it faded into the background…… of course I am not seeing it in person, so certainly wouldn’t have assumed it would look better with a different fabric😊……. But glad you did!😊 I hope to be able to do the Star of Wonder….too many projects in the works… but I love the look! Thank you for inspiring us!❤
I measure, measure, measure! It has really helped me.
Measuring is great...but I wish all patterns gave the measurement of each unit! That makes me do it!!!
Thought trees were too light when first saw. Think the white will do the trick. Redid 3 blocks in Autumn Wonders because as pretty as they were did not work with the rest of the blocks when they were all done. Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do.
Good morning Pat thanks for sharing n yes i do trim n measure my blocks 😊
@Pat Sloan if you run short on your binding for Autumn Wonder I have a yard of the grey background apple to share! Found some in a 50% off bin and bought more! I love this collection also!
The Christmas mystery is going to be so beautiful!!
I thought you were going to replace the grey (within the trees) with white. What a shock to see the blue going! It will definitely stand out.
Pat, I wish Wendy Sheppard told the measurements at each stage of Her Christmas QAL. My pieces are never right when I get to the end of the block. Mostly I'm 1/2 to 1/4. Inch too small.
Hi everyone - Happy Tuesday!
I love soft chocolate chip cookies - nuts are a plus. Don't care for sugar cookies but if I must eat them, I'd prefer them soft.
I like the white tree better, too.
Working on my tackle it tuesday...getting binding on my Calico Quilt seeds quilt from Lori holt patterns
I also thought the blue blended too much. Like the thought of white.
No cow or any animal fabric or quilts, not a fan. I like that you changed the trees to white it will pop on the quilt. Loved all the Halloween quilts so cute. Thank you and have a great day.
I don’t think I have any cow fabric, but we do have 12 mama cows and 1 bull, plus babies. Does that count??😂😂 I always measure my blocks as I go so I don’t get a big bad surprise when I am done with the block.
My tackle-it Tuesday I z to get my four tops ready and delivered to the long armer. It's doable!
Yes the white trees look better
how beautiful your moonbeams is with the white trees, I played with block placement so it will totally look different from what the pattern is (I'm using the kit from FQS) Oh and I'm finally cutting my Autumn wonders (kinda) Had to watch yours and Kendalls videos and take notes, then I'll cut the fabric (Amelia's Blues)
Love remake for sure
When I make log cabin blocks, square or diamond shapes, I always cut my strips wider and then press and trim to size. Sure it takes longer, but the end result is so worth it. I have made log cabin diamonds quilts, which results in nothing but Y-seams when you sew them together. It was a piece of cake because my diamond blocks were all the correct size.
Great advice to measure and adjust the blocks as you build them. Thank you.
Re sugar cookies: Sorry, but I cannot share your enthusiasm for them. No taste. They are only sweet. Oh well, more cookies for you!
❤❤❤
I really enjoyed the video today! I'm wondering if you finish out your binding by machine or do you hand sew? I like to do them by hand but it aggravates my carpal tunnel. I would love to see a binding finish on your sewing machine. I love your videos and learn so much from them. Thanks, Pat, for sharing all your knowledge!
I do all my binding by machine. I just showed you it on a video the other day😊
What about only changing sine of the blue to wht so they'd b a combo.?
In one if your shows you mentioned a video of 3 ways to make triangles. Where can I find that video. I'm new here and so enjoying your shows. Thank you.
Sometime show trimming flying geese.
Oh no don’t change the tree block, I love it just like it is, but hey, your quilt your rules
Do you use your AccuQuilt to cut a lot for cutting?
I love it! it's great for repeat blocks
I am working on flower stand. I measure every one that’s given and still having issues every other block. Usually on a multi step that only has measurements at the end. Any recommendations?😊
Sounds like you need to address your 1/4" seam allowance. Once you can consistently do that you should reduce the issue of wrong sizes.
@@PatSloan it’s a bernina and I am using the 1/4 foot. I will try dbl checking size when starting
@@deidrapowell8762
Maybe try a different ruler. Also use the same ruler brand throughout the cutting and trimming process. And maybe not use the mat as a measurement aide. Hope that helps.
Tootles
Instead of looking for binding for your tackle Tuesday quilt, why don’t you fold over your backing? It looks like you’ve got lots of it.
I never use folded over backing, It is not a look that i care for in binding for my projects
