I love how Odysseus stops singing once Polites dies. There's a full minute left to the song, but after Polites' death he simply disappears, even when we hear his crew desperately beg for a new plan/orders
Such a good way to show the _devastating_ blow this man just had
The audio journey of this song is just fantastic (it's certainly a top 3 song for me)
But mirscy's visuals simply take no prisoners, their animatic is absolutely Amazing.
I just noticed that in this animation, Polites dies because he goes to save the scared Lotus Eater. 😭
The multi-stage realization of what just happened to Polites gets me good.
I hope despite this horrible thing that happened in the song, you will still continue to react to Epic. I wish you good recovery

I still cry every time I listen to The Underworld, and I've listened to it a good number of times.
God its even worse knowing you watched "Your light." When I first listened to this i didn't really know the characters so when i heard "captain." i didn't realize who died, and then when i went back through it all with your light in the mix i was BALLING my eyes out.

4:14 Seeing Polites enter what can only be described as 'kill mode' is terrifying... and sad. And I love that almost everyone is depicted pretty inhuman in this animatic... except for a few key moments. In the Iliad Polites doesn't die here... but my god if this isn't a good narrative place for it, and I hate Jorge for making Polites so gods damned lovable!

that cyclops was the John Wick of this story, they killed his friend and he killed hundreds of people
This is no spoiler. The baby got dropped. Splatted. 12 feet under
It kinda is... Jorge elluded to the fate of the child throughout act 1 and when he sang "Monster" he purposefully emphasized "and if I have to drop another infant from a wall" to add that shock value. If you read the odyssey we know the baby died but if you didnt and if EPIC is your first time touching odyssey... Jorge did that on purpose to let people know "Yeah.... Ody ain't the good guy anymore"
@K1NG0FW0LV35 well, there are no "good guys" in Greek Mythology. In Greek Stories, might makes right. Because if not, let's look at this from a more moral stand point. Polyphemus is confirmed to be a young/child Cyclops as well as suffering from being a runt/dwarf of a Cyclops. So the other Cyclopi abuse him. The sheep are given to him by Poseidon to be his ONLY FRIENDS. And Odysseus comes in, kills his pet, DRUGS A CHILD, further cripples/mutilates a child, and then walks away like he's a hero.
But the Baby's death honestly is the most moral of his various actions honestly. It's the whole, "If you had a time machine, would you kill baby Hitler" thing. The baby would grow up to kill everyone in Ithica and kill all of Odysseus' family. So him killing the baby so that wouldn't happen is probably the least bad thing he does. And in the original myth, Odysseus doesn't even question it. He kinda just goes through killing and destroying with no moral quandries (again, might made right in those stories). Epic is meant to be more modern and adds more weight/morals to the choices

@@bradleybarnett1469 thats essentially what I was trying to say but I didnt really word it properly. Thank you. Jay even said that certain parts of the musical stray drastically from the odyssey.... For example if I remember correctly... He didnt reject Circe's advances.... And he actually had a child with Circe... And Calypso.... Our boy slept around.
@K1NG0FW0LV35 TO BE FAIR... Those are kinda the moments you have to feel the most bad. Circle specifically tells him, "If you don't sleep with me, your men will stay pigs forever" and Calupso tells him if he sleeps with her, she'll get him off the island (a ball faced lie). It's kinda bad (although in Greek mythology, SA happens all the fucking time)

oh also fun fact, Oddy's speech to his men is the same rhythm and lyric structure as Zeus gave to Oddy back in The Infant and the Horse :D

Actually, truth be told the original Odyssey.Polites was still alive when the met Circe Meaning Jorge went out of his way to make the odyssey more traumatizing I don't know if it was cruel or a Mercy considering what happens later on. Not sure if they ever say his fate in the original Odyssey Think he just lost relevance at 1 point and was forgotten about him.
OK, so I found out his fate in the Odyssey.Yeah, It was best.He killed him when he did.He did not deserve to be killed by Scylla 😬Since he didn't even betray him he was just collateral of her

Polyphemus is younger then most cyclops which explains why his response to losing his pet was so violent

My teacher said he was the youngest among all Cyclopes. He was only 3000 when Odysseus and crew found him.

Just realized that his "our foe must be thwarted here and now" is a call back to when Zeus said the same thing about the baby to Odysseus in The Horse, particularly the "here and now" is the exact same melody.

I dont think Polyphemus tricked us. I think he had his pet taken from him and was offered *wine* as an apology. Id kill Odysseus too
A big thing with this is odysseus also just freezes up because this is the first time any of his men have died. Not only that but they are such sudden and brutal deaths that he just can not think at that point
It's not just that, it's also the fact that Polites was literally his best friend. Who he watches get murdered in a horrifically brutal manner. Watching your closest friend get crushed feet away from you would be, I think, more traumatizing than just losing your first soldier.
It's even worse that the first soldier that dies IS his best friend.

If you wondering how many men went in the cave there were 12 and now six people survive. For 588 men they just waiting on the boats not knowing what happening.
Well I don't know but I supose that the crew of odysseus ship was like 50 men because there are 12 ships so it would be logical to be 50 persons pero ship, but I don't know if Im wrong.
He loses 7 actually. I won't go into detail how we know the math works out because its a spoiler but we know he loses 7 men here.
@@Evnyofdeath he technically could lose more if they are from other ships in his fleet
There's a possibility of 50 men (including Eurylochous, Polites, and Odysseus) being sent to steal Polyphemus' sheeps.
I heard that Polities was struck twice (one injured him, the next killed him)
If we go by the logic of one death per smack after that, 13 men died.
But I suppose in canon Odyssey, he gets 7 casualties.

I really like how the line “That is who we’re fighting” is the SAME rhythm to Zeus’ line “I don’t think you’re ready” in the song “The Horse and the Infant”. Because.. I mean… must I say more? It’s just SO well thought out. I love this musical.
Oh my gosh!! I’ve listened to this song at least 70 times and I only JUST found out they’re chanting “Polyphemus” at the beginning!! So cool!!!
oh just to make things worse Jorge shared what he was thinking happen during the scene and polites gets hit with the club landing in front of Odysseus then he says captain before boom he is hit a second time so yeah enjoy the pain the whole fandom feels-

I hope you also notice how the songs are interconnected by the lyrics, for example "our foe must be thwarted right here and now" it's a direct reprise of Zeus's prophecy in the horse and the infant, "six hundred lives at stake" is a reprise of "six hundred men!" from full speed ahead etc etc
The whole musical is full of reprises of previous song, it's just amazing

So the « it’s just one life to take » with the visual of the infant from the Troy saga was kinda Ody drawing parallels between them having to get rid of Polyphemus(just 1 life) and him being forced to drop the baby from the wall(it’s just 1 life) 😇

Jorge released new versions of the Troy and Cyclops Sagas more recently and I prefer the new Cyclops Saga because they sang them all from scratch and the screams and cries are more realistic. it's so well done! Sorry it made you cry tho

9:50 - I only just noticed when you sang it, the "Push foooooorward" starts with the same notes as "The Phaaaaaaaantom of the Opera is here".
There is absolutely nothing in this revelation, just made me go "huh, never spotted that."
It's amazing how someone who only got like...one song and then some lines in one before that made us all emotionally traumatized when he was yeeted into the Underworld.
Also yes, Jorge has confirmed that Odysseus does drop the baby at the end of Just a Man.
