- Could this cylinder get any longer!? We’re making use of all our workshop space for this tear down! In Part 12 of our Franna crane project we are disassembling this vital component, the boom extension cylinder, before diagnosing any issues and then rebuilding it better than before. Watch the transformation as we tear down, inspect, and replace worn parts. A couple of stubborn bearings means we have to get out the oxy torch and do some flame cutting before we complete the cylinder by sandblasting away all the old paint and rust and giving it a fresh coat of paint to make it like new! Most TH-cam creators are having to trim their content down to 12-15 minutes so they can hold the attention of their viewers. I would wager that this channel is one of the very few where viewers watch every last minute of content. I think that speaks volumes about both the quality of the production from Karen and the quality of the work and content from Curtis. You guys always put together compelling projects and we especially love the outtakes and bloopers!

This one of those one-in-a-thousand channels even among the big channels. Curtis is really good at what he does and Karen's camera work and editing is top-notch. Likeable people and they treat the cute doggo and the wild crows with such kindness. I bet a lot of people never thought they'd one day be religiously watching the refurbishment of a crane boom cylinder.

So, a pretty uneventful afternoon all round.” It’d be a great way to get demonetised so probably not a good idea but it would make me laugh my bollocks off. 😁

This Franna crane series is an edge of the seat experience. Will Kurt be able to put all the bits and pieces, nuts and bolts back together again. Putting the videos up for view on Fridays is such a tonic for a working man--at the end of a working week there's nothing better than a few beers, a pizza and a CEE video. Keep up the good work!

This look "so easy" for the sandblasting that.... I'm really excited (like a child prior Christmas) to discover the video of the crane chassis sandblasting. For me it is 100% sure now, with this so powerful unit and all the rebuilt already done (ie: this boom cylinder dismount) it will sandblast everything in the crane now to get out of the "coal mine washing plan rust" and have a good paint unit without any rust parcel. 🤩

I just love the outtakes. It's so 'normal'. Two people trying to make something and having all the normal problems and exasperating moments we all do because they're... just human. Way too much media is so over produced these days. I love that my kids are like "they make awesome stuff!!" and I'm like "wait for the end". Then they see you both go through the same struggles everyone does. Good for you for showing it. Its a big part of what makes this channel special.

When you started pulling that cylinder apart I didn't think it was ever going to end, that was an incredibly long cylinder but you managed to get it apart and reseal it, then sandblast it and put an awesome paint job on it that looked like it had never been painted before. This crane is going to be better than it ever was when it was new. Can't wait for the next step in the rebuild.
My favorite part of CEE videos is watching Kurtis solve problems with the simplest solution possible. He possesses a cleverness that never fails to teach me, in some manner that the simplest solution is usually the best one. As a mechanic I appreciate the attention to details. That is the difference between quality work and a hack job.
Watching Kurtis’ attention to detail at every step is hypnotic. Every bit of that crane, down to the air in the tires will be better than new when he’s finished the project!

The outtakes are what tell the true tale of how many attempts to seat a seal it takes. All mechanics know the truths behind your vids and that is how we can appreciate the incredible talent you have. Keep it going!
Oh man it was so nice to see the seal blooper, Lol. As a hydraulics mechanic myself it's nice to know that Kurtis is a mere mortal just like the rest of us.
Aside from educating and entertaining us this whole series will serve as an excellent reference manual for anyone working on a similar crane. On a sidenote, it’s nice to see that the audience engagement is driving. One of my favorite things about these videos is just the fact that Curtis knows what he's doing, every step of the way. It's a pleasure to watch someone so competent in what they do.

I’m watching this series and every time at the end I’m like damn why isn’t there more that 50 minutes wasn’t long enough. Love the chemistry between you two. Every step is detail oriented but at the same time not boring at all. You two definitely reserve the praise you are receiving. It is a blast to watch every second of the videos. Once the series is finished the crane will probably be in as good of a condition as when it rolled off the factory floor if not better.
Love the Rapid Blast system. Looks like Kurtis gets a workout holding the hose in check. Camera positioning was excellent. Karen should be nominated for a TH-camy Award. 😇

I don't know what it is about Curtis's videos, but I watch them in full every time I come across them in my feed. I have nothing to do with welding or heavy machinery, but I love watching him do his job. I just slap the video on one of my screens and poke away at my sysadmin stuff. Thanks a lot for the hours of entertainment, Curtis!
Was actually both surprised and impressed at the very modest expense for new seals. They can be absolutely ridiculous in price, but even at twice that price, it would be cheap peace of mind considering how much work is involved getting the damn thing out! Love your work CEE....
As mesmerized as I always am at the great teamwork of you two...I was spellbound and in awe watching the scenes of the surgical torch work. Most of us watching have used a cutting torch at one time or another, but what you accomplished so easily and surgically is a skill that surpasses 99.9% of everyone out here. Karen's filming and editing creative skills are just as surgical and precise and spot on. GREAT GREAT team. 😍 CEE ROCKS !!!

I hope you see this, I have never used a cutting torch but the master makes it look easy and that comes from extensive knowledge and experience and I might add he loves his work, that's plain to see. I operate a telescopic forklift in the construction industry and have been doing so for nearly 20 years, until I found CEE I never knew I had any attraction to engineering but now I do, the content Karen Kurtis and Homey put out is second to none, I'm hooked.
Hey Don! Glad you enjoyed seeing the torch work. It takes some practice to get that precise, but it's all thanks to years of messing up before getting it right! The first times you messed it up like a volcano.
I like the way Kurtis do it, it is the way I should do it if I must do it...
I used to cut bearings off with a 3 inch death wheel. Cut them straight across the race, then pop them off. The reason is because you don't have to buy a bunch of bearing race drivers when you can make your own. Weld a cross piece onto the race, then afix a piece of round stock perpendicular to the cross piece and boom, you have a bearing driver. The gap from the cut ensures that the race doesn't get stuck while driving the new bearing into place.
If I didn't need that size race, then yeah, a gas ax is the thing. You get good after a while. Okay, most people get good at it.

There might be a lot of cussing when the camera is stopped but I'm so impressed with how creative kurtis has to be with these technical challenges.
A lot of people would resort to big hammers and torches when things are stuck.

Your forklift certainly earns its money. You use it like another machine tool, but mobile. Doesn't it ever get jealous of all the attention you lavish on your cranes? Perhaps it should start getting its own viewer mail. Another stupendous vid - thanks!
This is turning into one of the most complex and interesting projects I have seen on this or other channels. We get cylinders, booms, engines, hydraulics, chassis, drive train, and eventually sheet metal I suspect.. Pretty much something for everyone.
Salvage channels spend time bringing back old iron to functionality and usually stop there. Sometimes they will do some painting.
Very few would devote the time, energy, and resources to doing what amounts to a ground up restoration for a tool of this magnitude.

I just rewatched the roller support video, so fun watching you used them here. Really like the mix of tech used, from high end sand blaster to a plastic bag to keep a puking cylinder in check.
And the bit where Karen was risking her life climbing equipment finding a good spot to film the sandblasting just shows the dedication! ;)

I'm less than a novice here, but this boom seems to be quite the piece of engineering. I find this one very interesting as I do most of your work. I appreciate your videos in that the length of each doesn't bother me as some other channels do. One big reason is that in an hour video, you don't feel the need to hear yourself talk for 58 minutes. When you have something to say, it's worth hearing. Thanks!

I'm always a little disappointed when an episode comes to an end. But the disappointment is quickly replaced by anticipation for the next one.
This crane lucked out being added to your family! It had no idea that you were planning a resto on it like you would a classic car! I also have to think that there are so many other people in the world now that have a completely new respect for how to treat their equipment based on seeing what it takes for you to repair things and how much effort you expend making sure you OWN equipment gets babied. Also wondering... Have you considered building a semi-permanent pallet to mount your blasting rig so it can be moved as a single unit? I think it'd be great to be able to fork onto your flatbed and have the compressor, mixing unit, and some kind of hose reel rigged up so you don't need to connect everything every time. Just plop it down, fill the abrasive tank, spool out the hose, and get to work! Just work out a way that the blasting rig bolts on to the pallet frame. Leave the wheels on but elevated so you can still move the kit independently of the compressor, just in case. I know you're busy but it seems like a worthwhile project. Love you guys!

I just did a rebuild of one of the boom cylinders on my excavator, and that was a struggle without all the right tooling and all, but we did get it done in the end. So i really enjoyed watching you do this job on that long cylinder. But as always you did a great job with it, thanks for the content and i really looking forward seeing that cranes transformation.

Definitely forklift certified, he uses that thing for everything it wasn't designed for by the engineer that thought it up and I love it.
As a old vehicle restorator, this is prime example on how to deal with old parts.

Great job, so pleased the piston was clean and damage free. Using the wrong puller, as you so rightly said, can cause deformation and even break what you are attempting to pull off. We have had some real cold nights recently down to - 6°C, but come the morning the birds get so excited when the food goes outside for them. The Robins are impatient and start to tap on the kitchen window for the food. We have not got any Kangaroos here, except for the escapee from a zoo years ago. Fantastic sight by the train tracks ❤.
