When you split the pant leg down the middle and added to insert how do you know how wide to make the insert at the waist. Also is your wool fabric stretch wool can any type of fabric be used for this elastic waist including cotton how do you know how wide to make the waistline
Wide enough to pass your hips when you're wearing it, since it is a pull down pants (there's no zipper opening).
So just measure the hip plus ease.

I tried it, but the pants I used to make the pattern were already so big, that the mockup turned out like clown trousers 😆 that's why I tried it with an old bedsheet first!

is there a way to calculate how much addition the back side needs? or do i just wing it?
you probably already figured this out, but for anyone else who’s curious you need to add enough so that the total circumference of the waistband without elastic is large enough to fit around your hips: so if the largest point of your hips is 40”, the total front and back measurement of the waistband has to add to 40, so just add enough to the back that it does :)
rachel b wait, so the waistband without any elastic should be the circumference of our waist... so are the actual leg pieces supposed to be thinner to account for that...
oddly self aware the waistband without elastic should be the same size or bigger than your hips, otherwise you won’t be able to get the pants on. the back pieces will be larger to account for that, and then they taper down until they’re the same width as the front pant leg at the bottom cuff. sorry it’s hard to explain, that’s what aya is doing when she cuts the pattern and flares it out to make the top bigger but keeps the bottom cuff the same width. hope this makes sense!

I I doubt anyone will see this because it was made five years ago, but JIC - I am a beginning sewer - can anyone explain to me why she added the extra width to the back? Was it because she was adding the half elastic waist? Or was she just reshaping the pants?

Maria m just use your favorite fitting pants, always remember to leave (seam allowance) or space 1/2 inch all the way around each piece more then the actual size for room to move, but yeah like Aya say, just have fun with it, we all were beginners at one time.

I started with plain A line skirts, elastic waist shorts and pyjamas pants, then culottes/wide-leg pants, I find that these are much easier than tops or dresses.
what is the length of the back waistband where you insert the elastic? double of the front?
