Lately I have been so interested in machine learning and I have reading and watching videos and trying to do some things in python. I am truly inspired to keep learning after watching this video. Thank you very much.
The most valuable aspect of human beings (and beings in general) is their capacity for esthetic experiences, things such as sensations, feelings, moods, states, thoughts, desires, dreams, etc (some would add "personality" to these examples, while others would *call* them "personality"). Very soon this will become obvious for us precisely because whenever one of us would try to pride him/herself with his intelligence or memory there will be an artificial intelligence that would crush that into insignificance. Also, we will increasingly delegate decision making and action to Ai's and robots: seeking a partner (Tinder), choosing what book to read (Kindle), deciding what to buy (Amazon), deciding what to eat, when to do medical exams, what music to listen to, what route to take to a destination, driving, etc etc. We will increasingly offload intelligence to Ai because our needs will be intelligently satisfied to a vastly much greater degree than using our petty intelligence. Not to mention political and economic governance, resource distribution, waste management and maintaining ecological harmony (but these types of individuals - the "leaders" (politicians, captains of industry) - will fight a holy war before renouncing their perks and power). Nonetheless, we'll all be forced to search for other aspects to pride ourselves with. I suspect that our satisfaction in calling ourselves "intelligent beings" will be replaced by other things, those i mentioned earlier. I don't have a problem subjecting myself to the decisions of intelligent and knowledgeable individuals as long as they don't prove themselves having egocentric private interests (the philosopher king should be the poorest among its subjects, disinterested in power and wealth - so this excludes today's politicians and CEOs). But in the same time i know that i have something sacred that cannot be made insignificant by anyone: my personality, feelings, thoughts, dreams, etc. Nietzsche said "Existence only ever justifies itself as an esthetic endeavour". Well, AI and AGI don't have such an experience (at least not in the foreseeable future).
@@raresmircea Well put. We are safe from irrelevance because of the value of sharing our subjective experiences. Until at least the hard problem of consciousness is solved!
Tyler Knight "value of sharing our subjective experience" and "the hard problem of consciousness", here’s something interesting that has to do with both. There is a pair of siamese twins, two happy 14 year old girls, that are conjoined at the head, just not in any ol’ way but at the level of the thalamus. This is important because they appear to have access to one-another’s conscious contents. Doctors and journalists have put them to test by blindfolding one of them and asking what the other one is doing and feeling (while they touched her in various places). Not only that but each one has access to the other’s sight! The incredibly sad part is that the parents won’t agree to let the girls be tested by scientists. They would be of immense importance to our scientific, philosophic and cultural development. They would enter history. Even so, thanks to them we have reason to believe that one very weird concept talked about in science and philosophy could be an achievable thing: "inter-thalamic bridges", said to be a thing that would one day be able to give us access to one-another’s conscious minds. The twins have irreversible natural biologic inter-thalamic bridges, but advancements in optometry and other techniques might one day give us reversible artificial ITBs. If it’s in 100, 200 or 1000 years, it’s the mere possibility that counts for us here and now. "Mind-melds" would drastically change the human way of life. Some scientists even say that we could mind-meld with apes, dogs and dolphins and have access into their souls, see if they’re there, probably even convincing us to take them as equal subjects of moral consideration. Here’s a few passages from philosopher David Pearce’s answer to how the year 3000 will look like (there are a couple of lines about thalamic bridges) - medium.com/@rares_mircea_82/passages-from-david-pearces-answer-to-the-question-how-will-the-year-3000-look-like-c83a3dd78b8d
@@raresmircea Wow that is very interesting. Definitely strikes me as more of a flying-car sci-fi possibility than something in the discussable future. But I see the connection. When it comes to automation, human irrelevance after the invention of super intelligence could be avoided by super augmentation. In the present day however, the machines are not so smart now to justify such invasive integration. I think David's work on explainable AI could take research in Human Computer Interaction to a whole new level by getting networks to communicate experience with us through modalities that structurally share meaning (i.e. language, visualization), and importantly, don't require surgery. maybe it's cuz when neuron performs a function and then those 20 neurons are erased, it has more space to perform the various function better. Like how workers can't work efficiently in cluster areas. maybe some breathing room is required and then other workers just take on the job, making the work to be even cheaper to produce while performing it (in this case, faster). But cut away too much and you just have massive cell death. So the second question will be is what's the sweet spot?
