I couldn't agree more. I am a professional artist and have spent my life developing my art and my business. In the first half of my career, I made no money and thought I didn't have to think about money and that it would take care of itself. I thought art and money didn't mix. Over time I matured and realized the connection between art and money and the value of focusing on Business and ultimately embracing sales. I have been living off of my art for the last 7 years and would never have done this without embracing business and sales as integral to the artistic and creative process. I definitely agree with your message here Dan. Right on point.

I really acknowledge that you had worked hard to achieve this wonderful dream and that you are happy now. I guess you also have faced many hardships on your way, but it will be so kind of you if you would like to discuss some knowledge regarding that as I'm a young artist and really want to go far and wide with my talent but have not much idea of how to become a professional one. It would be so kind of you to help me in my journey. 😍

One of my friends is an artist and a few years ago he tried to make a business out of it but after awhile he started to lose passion for his craft because he said it was becoming too much like “work” - if that makes any sense. He decided to go back to his roots and again loves what he does. In his case, his passion was better suited as a hobby. That’s not necessarily a bad thing either. Everybody’s different.

I was thinking the same. A lot of artists are still trying to figure out the business side of their craft, but some completely ignore it or don't pay attention to it. Some of them think they can rely too much on their craft and be fine like it sells itself, but business is business, strictly financial and you need to figure it out.

I realized everything I had been doing wrong as an artist once I learned how to copywrite. I've been teaching my 13 year old daughter business and marketing because I know it will help her in life, especially if she pursues digital art like she wants to.

Totally agree! I get blamed very often for my marketing and strategic approach from other artists. Some even say "A real artist doesn´t look after the money!" But when you check the contemporary art superstars, their career is strongly based on successful marketing and PR. Their art could be replaced easily, but they just know how to play it right and with whom to collaborate or not. They have an excellent business manner and lots of discipline - knowing that their profession has nothing to do (anymore) with creative self-realization. The focus is on the customer, the market, the galeries, the curators - and still in alignement with the own unique artistic language and philosophy. That´s why so many artist struggle. They just don´t get this profession (and business) right. The creative part is only half of it, if you truly want to succeed. The rest is about building the right relationships and connections and about developing a radiant personality that others love to collaborate with.

I'm a big fan of Vincent Van Gogh. Lived for his art and became one of the biggest artists in history. Only sold one painting during his life. Never knew how famous he would be after his death. But he gave the world art, in a priceless manner. No marketing, not someone that got attention, but he was dedicated to make fine art. That is what deserves all my respect, not businessmen that just try to sell.

I am an illustrator and visual/fine arts is hard to break into. My favorite artist as a business person is Tracy Emin. Her art is so personal and yet she's able to sell it, because she recognises to be successful you have to be at commerce. I still watch her interviews in the 90s.

Thank you. I totally agree with this, even to the point where I tried many related businesses (like writing copy and so on) in order to get the money so I could be assured of having the capital to get my music out. None of them worked and then I started developing hand and finger and nerve pain, and I realized I had no more time for anything but to focus on the music and trust the universe that I would have what I needed when I needed it. I have always been appreciative of someone who could build something, and I have always appreciated the compassion with which you teach. Of course I would like to say I have broken through and succeeded. Regardless, when it's your core... your essence... it's my experience that it will cost you to go after it, but it will cost you even more if you don't. Try until you die, but never quit.

Thanks, Dan for your mind, really helps me to focus on my business strategy, talent is a Greek word for total or a sum, I called this gift of awareness, therefore I like to start a brand for the creatives called, Art IS Awareness, it should help the independent artist find an audience faster, it would be great if you could make a video with your friend in the future, how to grow a brand - choosing the right partners - keeping the rights on music, are very important topics especially for the artist, appreciate your work!

Thank you so much Dan. I am an artist and not only have I needed to learn how to sell but to include every aspect of a successful business such as: PR, mktg, financial education, investment in training (tickets to museums), teamwork, a continuous learning and updating...and the list continues. As artists we can believe that being talented is enough to be successful, nevertheless, it takes way more than that. Another myth from most artists is that we should work only when inspiration comes, I don't agree. My art career is as professional as successful companies are. That's how I actually call it, my company.
