The first Singapore-style hawker centre in New York City is open for business. Urban Hawker in midtown Manhattan features 17 vendors serving a wide range of favourite Singaporean dishes including prawn noodles, white bee hoon and Hainanese chicken rice.

@Dark Blue if u noticed most western food also came from China. China 1st built wheat and grain industries........ Wheat become noodles, dumplings, guo tie, bread brought along with Marcopolo to Italy become spaghetti, carbonara, bread, pizza, etc, etc and with German they made hot dog
@@darkblue327 katong laksa, hainanese chicken rice, hainanese curry rice, soup tulang, chilli crab, hokkien mee, tutu kueh etc were all created in Singapore.
SUPER PROUD OF THIS!!! So glad they could try our food and Kudos to KF Seetoh and all the Hawkers who ventured there. Never really thought much of our food but realised it’s truly a unique food. We don’t have lots natural wonders like mountains and rivers but we are blessed with affordable multi cultural food every day!
What differs Singaporean foods from Chinese?
Don't count on it. Just observe for yourself on a daily basis how many foreigners living in Singapore actually eat in hawker centres in Singapore! Virtually only see a handful on weekends and close to none on weekdays and usually some elderly tourists in the more city areas. Not even where their enclaves are. They don't eat the hawker food! If you see them eat some token Asian food in shopping malls, it is Japanese, Thai or North Indian food in clubbing areas.

@@weekdaycycling We have food from our main races like Malay, Chinese, Indian, Eurasian, Peranakan etc. Some of the food are a fusion of dishes from different races like Indian Mee Goreng. And also food from the surrounding, neighouring region. Even the Chinese food in itself is different in a way, differentiated between the main Chinese dialects like Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, Hainan cuisine, e.g Hainan Chicken Rice and Teochew Kway Chap.
They should try your kiasu kiasi culture too.
The thing I like about hawker food, more than the culture of sharing tastes, is the fact that many of these dishes originate years back, where the original recipes and ingredients are obtained and passed down mostly through family lineage. You can have the same dish from 2 different families, and it'll never be exactly the same, because each has its own touch, family recipe and tradition mixed in through the flavors that burst in your mouths.

the whole point of hawker center is affordable price 😅also the indonesian version of rendang and hongkong's version of hokkien mee (and chicken rice & friends) taste better than singapore's ... and there is no shortage of such outlets in nyc. but i kinda prefer sg's chili for the chicken rice, a taste i grew up with on measly allowance.
btw, this is priced 4x the price of what hawkers sell it in food courts in Singapore...5usd vs 20usd
Everytime i travelled overseas, i will miss Singapore local food... This is how yummy they are and i'm glad ppl in other countries get to enjoy these delights! 🤩

ya Sure Seetoh, Get Singapore Government to Implement the USA Minimum Wages in Singapore. Then we can talk about hiking the pricing of Chicken rice up to 20++ SGD per plate in Singapore.
This is just awesome. Spent years of my childhood in Singapore, and will never forget the awesome Hawker Centres and Singaporean, Malay and Indonesian foods. So awesome, lah! I hope this hawker centre stays open for at least twenty years to spread the love in the USA.
I like how the dish set they showed costs $19 whereas in Singapore it’s $3.5

@@file8229 hmm… you are not wrong… Hawker centre = non aircon food court with 30 or more food and drinks stalls, Kopitiam (Coffeeshop) = Non Air con food court with around 10 stalls…..
19$ in Manhattan is only a few bucks more than Mcdonalds. Way better value and so much better for you. I love this Asian style market. Makes me miss Bangkok and Seoul.
Wow you must go all out at McDonald’s man. For 19 bucks, I can get two lunches out of a no frill Chinese restaurant or food carts on the street or MealPal. Not even urban space is charging the price their demanding.
@@marg8315 If you consider a double quarter meal all out, then yes. It costs almost $15. The guy in the video was comparing his $19 price to Mcdonalds. So, it is in the same ballpark and of course there are cheaper options, but that's hardly going all out. A 40 pack of shareable nuggets and 2 fries is over $30 bucks, so not sure why you think this is so expensive in comparison.

Singapore food is amazing in its variety and taste
I get why the price is expensive in Manhattan. But one reason why hawker food is cheaper in Singapore is because the tiny island is surrounded by countries with a much lower exchange rate where they can buy their agricultural products from cheaply, even though once in a while you get some countries like Malaysia imposing a temporary ban on chickens to Singapore. Moreover I believe hawker centers there are run by the government. There is no air conditioning despite it being in the tropics. Government won't and shouldn't charge private commercial rental rates for those hawker stalls because it will increase the cost of living for Singaporeans even further, especially for basic needs like food. When you have a hawker centre in an airconditioned mall, then it is not different from a food court.

You should add that nominal wages are lower in Singapore compared to the US, making low prices a necessity
nah in singapore, food court prices in singapore in air conditioned malls are still relatively cheap - like $5-8
Also include the fact that Singapore doesn’t have minimum wage either.

Singapore food is probably one of the most underated cuisine in the world. It is full of diversity and taste and you have to taste it to know. I am counting my blessings because I can eat all these food every day in Singapore.

Need one in Boston!! Hoping that'd happen before I "kick the bucket (I'm 75)." However, before that happens I'd travel to NY just to fulfill one item on my bucket list...and, that is...visit Singapore for their delicious street food (I was there many years ago and still remember it till this day!!) 👏👏👏👏

My old next door neighbor has a VERY productive tree that’s been around for decades-I’m sure there are Filipinos around there who also grow their own fruits & veggies @ home!

It’s just one of the citrus varieties (I think I read/heard somewhere that it’s a cross bet. a lemon & tangerine?), and citrus *_does_* grow in certain areas of the US.
I’m from SoCal (greater LA area), and my neighbor’s tree bore fruits year-round. Of course, some of those fruits were still in the green stage, at times, but there were always ripe fruits remaining, as well.
It was more fruit than leaves.

actually Singapore's living expenses to income is great. for neccesity is more than enough. Just started from year 2002 the rent suddenly shoot up . that made it the most expensive expenses.

The only genuine Singapore’s local innovation is Chilli Crab, Roti Parata and Roti John and Kaya Toast while the rest came from Malaysia and SEA. In fact many of the items came from Korea and Japan, especially when they didn’t even bother to change the names from “Ramen” for Prawnaholic Collections 🤷♂️

I can see the demands for this Hawker Centre in most cities in US. There are similar Asian food courts in existence, but this type is proven successful.
They need to open one in South Florida, Calamansi, Pandan and Curry Leaves grows in South Florida so the food will be better instead of rely on frozen ingredient for spice flavoring.

Imagine calling kimchi a Singaporean food, that's equivalent to what they're doing right now. China has pickled vegetable dish like kimchi too, and kimchi most likely had influences of that but the Koreans made something new out of it, with their own essence to it. That's not what Singapore is doing. It’s only right to feel bothered if you’re SEAsian, they’re blatantly taking from you and calling it theirs. I mean, they don’t even have their own language, their official language is English pffttt and you expect them to come up with their own foods? Or at least put their own spin on it? Nah.

@@imthecoolest50 I'm not Singaporean, I'm Malaysian. But I have to defend Singapore here because us both countries essentially came from the same family.
The official language of Singapore is not only English, but also Malay, Mandarin and Tamil. Sit on their public transport, announcements are made in all four languages. This is something I respect a lot about Singapore, they don't sideline all races. English was included as a middle ground so it seemed fair to the diverse people living there.
India's official language is both Hindi and English. Do you have beef with India too? Saying India has no national identity?
And I don't think I've ever heard any Singaporean that tried to push Kimchi as a national food 😅 Yeah there are local brands loved by locals, but that's about it. There own spin on it. As to why some of their national foods like Roti and Hainanese Chicken Rice etc are similar to other countries is because Singapore is a relatively new country, made up of many people that came from many parts of the world from places similar to the Malaysian population. So it makes sense they have foods that are similar.

I don’t think you understand what he’s saying. He saying despite the price pressures our hawkers work hard to keep it affordable for us. Rent and ingredients have sky rocketed.

People saying that the price is too high but they go into some restaurants and pay the same price or more for smaller portions are crazy. Don't get me started about sushi, no cooking except rice is done and you are paying $12 for one piece is NY, come on guys, stop being prejudice
Think those people that complained are just plain naive. Its located in downtown Manhattan, New York. The rental costs must be unimaginable. Also, America has minimum wage laws as the video mentioned . I believe the workers there are paid at least US$ 5,000 monthly from what I saw in another article. With such high rental and employee cost, how to survive if maintain "hawker pricing?"
Also, the portion sizes looks way bigger(American size) compared to what is served locally at hawker center.

Couldn't be prouder that New York could have a taste of Singapore over there. And I think it's about time that we not only represent Singapore food to the Western world but also from the Southeast Asian region. True, that while many of our neighbouring countries might argue this food or that food comes/belongs to their heritage but the important thing is not only to bring SEA food the US but also to bring the hawker centre culture there. And I couldn't agree more with Seetoh about extending the hawker centre legacy to the future.
In US their food potion are huge, hope they don't find SG food potion too small.
