I was twelve in 1972. I remember the styles like platform shoes, bell bottom pants, shag carpets, womens neck scarfs and see through topless dresses, macrome, plaid suits and mens leisure suits, avacado kitchens and bright colored kitchen appliances and the list goes on! You're a young girl who did her homework but you weren't there so you don't experience the memories us post WW2 people do! I'm telling you growing up in the 1970's was a real far out trip and it was the best time to be a youth and our music can't be beat!
‘72 was a wild year and I loved Emma’s take on it. At some point before, a friend had given me the album, “Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band,” as a birthday gift. It changed my life. The music and lyrics were like nothing I’d ever heard. I listened to the record until I eventually wore out the grooves. I collected every Beatles album I could find and read books about them. The interview book “Lennon Remembers” by Jann Wenner was especially influential. Wenner had conducted a series of interviews with Lennon and Yoko Ono for Rolling Stone ragizine and agreed not to publish a book but did so anyway. Wenner never was a man to allow integrity to get in the way of making a buck. Lennon came across as bitter and broken at the time. It reshaped my view of The Beatles, but I eventually acquired every American album of theirs.
At a Rolling Stones concert that April in San Diego at the Sports Arena, a riot broke out over counterfeit tickets. Fifteen people injured and another sixty arrested. A friend and I initially planned to go, but we fortunately weren’t able to get tickets, real or fake.
In the news there was mention of a thing called Watergate. At first a minor news story of an amateurish burglary. But over the next two years it would come to dominate the views of the entire US political system.
At school, I was one of several thousand students. Most classes had forty or more kids. Success mostly consisted of not causing disturbance. I slept thru a lot of my classes, and teachers would wake me when it was time to go to the next one. My grades were good, but meaningless. I learned more from spending as much time as I could in the school library. This was where I was first exposed to Rolling Stone and Creem magazines. I read everything I could get ahold of. By year’s end I wanted to be a writer-a serious, crusading journalist, tellin’ it like it is, man. Speaking truth to power, babe. This endeavor got me in a lot of future trouble.
The war in Vietnam raged on, and I had older friends who had graduated high school and were drafted. A couple died there, and one was trapped in a Viet Cong tunnel for two days and was never the same after he was discharged from the Marine Corps. I was on the school newspaper, and mention of casualties of prior students was forbidden. I wrote an article about a friend I’d known from running track who had been killed on his first mission there anyway. For my offense, I was suspended from school for two weeks, but it was the least I could have done. I would eventually be suspended from school twice more for similar infractions before being bounced off the school paper altogether. My mouth and distrust of authority figures were becoming apparent.
You mentioned some of my favourite albums today - David Bowie's "The rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust" a groundbreaking record ahead of its time. Also loved Neil Young's "Harvest" and Carol King's "Tapestry" among others
