    I looove that indie polishes have so much going on. Since I’m the only one that ever sees my nails 90% of the time, I want to be able to get lost in all the elements!

    I missed the opportunity to submit anything, but I couldn’t love this video more!
    My number one annoyance at this point is people buying limited edition polishes and then flipping them for twice the cost. It just ruins the good, happy nature of why we wear nail polish. I want it to be completely honest and upfront without the ugly price gouging aspect, lol. My dream is to have local polish swap events where we can all get together face to face and trade/sell polishes.

    • @kathleenwheeler5573
      @kathleenwheeler5573 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s my pet peeve - I saw people buy limited advent calendars and put them up for sale immediately. You know they only bought them to flip them. Grrrr. And a local polish swap would be awesome!

    I have so many feelings.
    My hot take: most people hate flooded cuticles. Not that we need to be mean to people, I also wouldn't say anything! I just find it intolerable.
    In fact, "I like visible brush strokes" is the only seriously unpopular opinion in this list lol.
    Magnetics make me miserable every time. I love them but they are so much harder for me than other nail art.
    Nude nails exist for when you need to pretend you don't wear loud nail polish but your nails are stained from wearing loud nail polish.

      I had issues with magnetic nail polish until I discovered the technique of laying your finger on the magnetic instead of trying to hover it above. (Also making sure to magnetize the topcoat too).

    • @MediocreManis
      @MediocreManis  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, if I saw a flooded cuticle picture I would just keep scrolling, no reason to rag on someone!

    • @Brittfawn
      @Brittfawn ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think those that have flooded cuticle nails either are just lazy and don’t care OR they simply don’t know the proper techniques to correct/fix it. I didn’t know how when I was younger until I watched a video on it and the only way I knew how to clean them up was in the shower 😅 so yeah I would never call anyone out for that either. Also, I love a good nude polish not gonna lie. But I am 100% that b**** that loves a no makeup makeup look and I’ll even complain on some videos on it that it’s not “no makeup makeup-y enough” lmao. Like you can’t wear eyeliner with that look imo but people do it anyway and it drives me nuts. Anyways, my favorite nudes all have some type of glitter in them I just think it’s a nice twist and so so beautiful. I think it’s a more elegant look. Sometimes I just need a break from all the color. I think Kelli Marissa puts it nicely, it’s a palette cleanser.

    Ooh also had to come back when you got to the part about cruelty free… 100% agree. It’s such a misnomer, like oh would you like your polish with cruelty or without? Um duh, who would say ooh yes I’d like a little sprinkle of cruelty please… which means it’s a selling point. There’s zero guarantee that literally every single step of the chain of manufacturing is “cruelty free”. What constitutes cruelty anyway? Is it strictly animal testing (just because these ingredients aren’t tested on animals today doesn’t mean they never were btw) or do you count worker’s conditions in manufacturing factories as well?? Imo it’s a form of greenwashing, makes people feel like they’re doing something good when they only buy stuff with the label, which tbh no hate, more power to you if that’s you and you have the capacity to research and stay on top of it but I do not 🤷‍♀️

    This isn't the first time I've heard that opinion on stamping. it makes me a little sad. I find stamping to be a lot of fun especially for making nail art on my dominant hand. I found for myself it took a lot of practice and fiddling around to get the stamp just right, and with all nail art its a skill that needs time and patience. Idk I understand where their coming from as its not as impressive as free handing, but it just makes nail art so much more accessible to every one. thats my two cents lol. Now for my unpopular opinion. Moon Cat's cap is too hard to hold onto i need all my stupid fingers on the cap just to hold it right lol

      I’m newly into stamping and I want to see the people who say it’s lazy do it, then, and do it well 😅. I think it’s super hard and involves a lot of creativity to make look good (and I haven’t reached that level, myself) 😊
      (Edit) and actually I was thinking most of the “hot takes” were clearly about preferences, vs the stamping one was just…. Kind of mean? Like, “I don’t like glitter” is a different thing from “you have no creative skills and your art is not art” isn’t really a great attitude to me. 🤷‍♀️ don’t wanna be a thin-skinned person but I did think “hmm that’s just unkind” 😂

    • @eightmagpies
      @eightmagpies ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Depending on how you do it, I can see how it's not as "creative" as free handing it, but I do my nails to look good, not to prove something. When I use stamping I get complements and I feel like my nails look more neat and finished than when *I* freehand. I don't understand the hate for using all the tools available to us. Also, agree, stamping takes a lot of practice and time to get right.

    One thing about magnetics that none of the sellers mention: You need to roll the bottle and You NEED to magnetize your top coat, and you need to magnetize it for a LONG time. I find that I can even get away with only magnetizing my top coat, but I do need to magnetize for 1.5 to 2 minutes PER NAIL. If I do that my effect stays crisp for 4-5 days, and I can refresh it by topcoating and magnetizing again. Magnetics do disperse over time, but so far I haven't had a single one truly lose effect, and I generally wear mine for at least a week, often more. You can't do the crazy designs that gel polish enables, but I think normal magnetics are fantastic either way.

  • @BreezyStreamy

    Flooded cuticles. I'm pretty sure that I do that all the time because I'm new to doing my nails and I don't know the difference in manis with and without them. However, I think I might be learning on what it is!
    I have been recently trying to clean up my finished mani with a clean-up brush and it is a game changer! Like, it just makes things look nicer and I have noticed that I get more compliments on my nails when I do. Last night, I went to a birthday dinner and some people were shocked that they weren't professional, but it wasn't the best of lighting. Looking at them now in the daylight, I can see where my clean-up didn't take (I waited until my mani was fully dry than clean up while you go, and while you go method is waaaay easier) and it looks like if I went coloring outside the lines.

  • @BreezyStreamy
    @BreezyStreamy ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Stamping being boring and uncreative. I totally disagree with them.
    I believe that an artist can be great not necessarily for their talent, but for what that they see in the tools that they are given and utilizing them. I mean, anyone can look at a chunk of marble and just see a rock and think it's a waste of space, but it takes a true artist to see a statue that they will carve out of it.
    I guess, it is what the person make of it. It can be boring and a waste if a person doesn't see the potential and that's on them. They can use anything and everything on a plate however they like it. If they want to use all of the plate, you can try layering techniques and just have the first few layers be the images that they don't like, which could create unique backgrounds that would just make the image that they do like pop even more (if they understand coloring and spacing.)

  • @SaRyRe
    @SaRyRe ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Yay, you picked my submissions!
    Calling stamping boring triggers me a bit. Sure, as long as you have the tools, anyone can transfer any design on their nail, but it does take practice and creativity to be REALLY good at it. There are insanely creative people who combine and layer very unique colors and finishes and there's nothing boring about it. Like, painting supplies are accessible to everyone and technically anyone can use them, but it takes skill and creativity to paint something outstanding.
    Obviously, everyone would love all nail polish to be cruelty free, but people forget that it's kind of a privilege to have the option to buy only vegan and cruelty free products. Money and availability are the simplest reasons why people continue buying from OPI and Essie. And unfortunately, cruelty free is actually a rather misleading term in itself.
    Cutting cuticles is unneccesary. Moisturize and push them back regularly and you wouldn't even have anything to cut!

    I have *barely* started to get right the gap between my cuticles and polish. I am not flooding my nails anymore, but it’s hard for me to get the curve without any crookedness or bleeding. Even when I clean up with a brush I make a mess. It’s easier for me to do with gel than with regular lacquer. The formula seems friendlier for beginners.

    I would rather have flooded cuticles than "the gap" IDK why, but I HATE large gaps, particularly on the sides of the nails. I once saw a video on "brazilian manicures" and that's the look I want. I love magnetic polishes, but I understand why others wouldn't want to mess with it, it's a headache to learn how to do well. I never get the sharp line that I see advertised, but I've developed a technique for them that I like. I think the 3D, almost marble-like effect of them is just amazing.

  • @Genista18

    Loving your Vlogmas videos especially these topical discussions Hillary this was great💯🥳🙌👏🏽what a hoot😅 my unpopular take: clipping your cuticles are fine if you know what you’re doing so you don’t hurt yourself and if you’re committed to constantly maintaining that look. (Personally didn’t “know” what I was doing when I started but I was super cautious so I never cut or hurt myself and didn’t realize how quickly it comes back but it’s my personal preference so I don’t mind the work.) I also don’t get the hype with Holo Taco, Bee’s Knees and even Wildflower. Don’t come for me I love them as much as I love my many other favorite brands and as a collector sometimes I’m just more wowed when a cheap bargain brand gives me an indie looking/quality feeling polish. I also started watching simply nailogical years before Holo taco came out. I jumped in the band wagon and I purchased every single release up until the magnetics. The polish is goood quality but after the dark rainbow collection I started having a sour taste in my mouth. I also notice that sometimes the polishes are marketed to be so much more sparkly then they are in real life. Then I found the anniversary polishes to be underwhelming and repetitive. Also the birthday polish that was so excited for was a major disappointment. I will still purchase Holo taco but I am going to be selective now. I love cirque and I finally decided to stop ordering HT and I ordered 20 from cirque. I have a good base collection now where I can dupe almost any nail art… I’ll be reserving future purchases for special times when I want to order 10-20 from a brand. I hate the feeling of always needing to buy new releases even if I’m not financially comfortable doing it. I have so much mail polish I can’t even wear all of it unless I’m doing nail art. Holographic mail polish doesn’t do much for me either. I thought I needed to love it and I’ve just recently accepted that I don’t. Love the video and I agree with you on reflective glitters. I hope people don't hate me for saying this, but I'm not a fan of Holo Taco. Fun video!
    1. LOVE magnetics and they come out fabulous because I leave the magnet over the nail for 90 seconds on each finger with each coat, including top coat. But I only do magnetics on my left hand, I pair it with a complimentary color of my right (dominant) hand.
    2. I have hundreds of polishes but very few thermals. However my absolute favorite polish ever is a thermal from PPU in ‘91, Paradox Polish ‘Rose Quartz’. It has the prettiest combination of flakies & glitters. I’ve never seen another polish with the same combination of ‘stuff’ in the polish. The thermal kind of still works, but I love both the cold shade and the warm shade, so I’m good when the thermal part quits working and it stays permanently in just one shade.
    I would only buy a thermal if I loved every shade of that thermal polish, because the worst that will happen is that you’ll be stuck with a polish that doesn’t change colors anymore. But if the polish is gorgeous, who cares if it no longer changes colors.

    Some people are sure opinionated. LOL. I am kind of a live and let live person, hey, if you like something, who am I to judge. That being said, I totally agree with the fact that Cirque's brush sucks, and it's one of the main reasons I buy very few of their polishes anymore. I do like Holos, but I don't go out of my way to buy them. If I like one, I buy it. All nail art, including stamping is just too labor intensive for me, but hey, if you like it, enjoy! Same with the color purple, I don't care for it so I don't buy them, but if you love it, party on! Personaly, I like both magnetics and thermals, but I buy very few thermals and try to use them that season, because I know their time as thermals is limited. Reflectives are cool, but I am tired of them. I think that's most of my random thoughts on this very fun video of yours!

    At the end of the day nothing is cruelty free. A brand may be cruelty free but the places they source their ingredients may not be. It’s an issue that goes beyond the individual, and I say this as someone that has actively been to my states capital to protest cruelty. You have to pick your battles and do what you emotionally can handle.

      Very well stated!! 🙂 I've often had the thought, "I really should be looking into cruelty free, vegan, no harmful chemicals, etc.", but it quickly became overwhelming; and I also suspect that some of those platforms stretch the truth to promote their agenda. Now I just go with, do I love this brand/color? If so, I'm buying it.

    Holo/Flakies.
    I like holo and flakies, some polishes are just beautiful, but every other polish is either holo/flakie. I think I'm a little turned off by them because even though a polish is beautiful, you can probably do something similar if you have a holo/flakie topper. When I go window shopping through indie brands, most of what I put in my cart is toppers and then I may have a special shade, but I generally take out anything that's dupeable. I'm more into finding decent indie crème formulas, especially for neon, but a lot of them don't go for that due to formulation or because they are sorta plain.

(On sale) it’s a reasonable price point and they’re easy to remove. I think they deserve the hype within the brand. I find hyped crème polishes to be way harder to understand. I’m way too chicken to attempt cutting my cuticles and have never tried. Thinking of the time I got a French manicure at a salon and she nipped a finger and I guess cleaned it and kept going - so in the end I had a little pool of blood at the top of one nail. 😒

    I loved It when it first came out. I still like them but couldn't keep up with all the releases. I started being selective a long time ago. The fans are touch and go, along with the anti ht people. I agree, indies tend to over do it, so I'm selective with my ppu orders too. Nail photos are tricky but it really can be done well with some research and practice. I love love thermals. I buy the colors I like in all the shades it offers so if it stops shifting it's fine. But I've never had one quit on me. I hate magnetics, too much work and it never lasts for me. I never nip my cuticles. I'm definitely not helpless with long nails. I ordered a bunch of Zoya recently and got a ton of free wide brushes, I wasn't charged for them at all. Visible brush strokes appeal depends on the finish.

    Hilarious video, I had a blast! Re Holo Taco - I am totally indifferent to the brand, I am just bored by the flood of gushing reviews over each release, I wonder if there is anyone NOT reviewing Holo Taco 🤪😂. I also scroll over swatches on oil flooded nails, it grosses me out. And then my unpopular opinion: I am ready for holographics 3.0. We had 1 with the crazy waterbased holos (Nfu oh, Fnug, your Chanel). Then they managed to create ‚normal‘ holos - I call them holos 2.0 - and the nailpolish world went mad over them (Colors by Llarowe, Girly Bits, Enchanted to name a few). So here‘s to holo 3.0 🥳🤓

    My hot take: Cutting the skin around the nail is a sign of laziness and wanting a quick fix to dry keratinized skin. People who actually take care of the skin around their nails can see the difference and we're secretly judging you and your inflamed, irritated dry skin. 😘 Oiling regularly is way better than cutting.
