A female brown bear may tear you to pieces, but only because she was protecting her cubs. Some people make a conscious decision to hurt others. You are your own first responder. Besides carrying a medical trauma bag with me everywhere I also carry a pistol.

As far as that first story goes, no shit dude. The police have always let me down every time I leaned on them for help. Otherwise, in my other encounters they're the antagonists in the story. But 9k in repairs? Must have been a brand new car for insurance not to total it. Depends on the manufacturer, but the gas light (if it works correctly) usually is between a 1-2 gallon reserve, so that's anywhere from 15-30 miles conservatively per gallon.
The last story was dumb, or the people were dumb. First, wtf is wrong with the road system?? No cars for hours?? And then, how do you leave hotel without f-ing water, with a broken car???

I've noticed that the people who get on social media saying stories and movies aren't scary, are actually the same folks who can't handle being scared. They'll go see a scary movie only with friends and make noises during quiet scary parts. It's a coping mechanism for being freaked out. They'll hear a story and immediately tell others it's not scary just for instant gratification.

The only two reasons we are lucky enough to even hear these stories is because either they were simply made up fiction, OR, because these people were LUCKY! Story 2 is THE reason I have & know how to use a Thomas Guide & why on any road trip, every1 NEEDS to have a gas can in the trunk w it filled up Story 3 makes me thankful that my dad(rip), who was a computer programmer, knew everything about cars & could fix anything(w in reason) on a broken down car. He always brought necessary tools etc on road trips when my brother & I were young & he always brought a loaded gun in the trunk also. My family went on a lot of road trips thru when I was in HS. We never had any problem & instead just had fun. Now, when I take a road trip, I DEF know what I need to take w me. Thx dear dad for being the BEST dad ever & for making sure you were watching out for me when I needed you most!

The next day, that drive between Vegas and LA was unnerving because I left at 7am and it was already 105 degrees. I drove right through Death Valley and it's no joke. I had a '96 Accord and the air conditioner was broken so my windows were all the way down. The air felt like when you open an oven door. Each telephone pole has an emergency help phone on it. There was nothing in both directions except random trailers that people lived in way in the distance where the desert met the mountains. Water is essential and so is a reliable car because you DO NOT want to break down out there.
That first story had me so mad that the cops did NOTHING not even helped him get a tow truck or ride outta there! What a joke! The damage they did to the rest stop and that man’s car should have pissed them off! Don’t they care about safety in their town! Unbelievable what that man went through. Gosh that has me just pissed off for his sake! I have so much more to say but I need to take a deep breath and calm down. That’s just bullshit

Second, I'm from a small country in Europe, which puts my mind in an inability to comprehend American vastness, but I heard enough to prep myself with gallons of water, solid food supply, and a weapon if I ever get to drive in the US.
Story 1 "parts of Texas, New Mexico, and parts of the southwest are butt ugly" Exactly what I have been saying to my friend in AZ, he says I should open my mind. I would like to get out there to see the sights one day, at the same time there is some boring country side and lotssssssss of it.
