    This is the video I have been searching for! I was bought up by my grandfather keeping fish in a very VERY simple way. He had no filters, no air stone and would even catch his own fish and plants for the tank. I watched his fish grow from tiny to huge while I was a kid with such a simple technique.
    I have tried to stay true to this set up and let the tank balance to the point where I only feed and top up my tanks due to evaporation. (I do use air stones, lights & filters) But so often on TH-cam and in the fish keeping community you are condemned for doing such things.
    I have one tank I haven't done anything except topping up water and feeding for over a year, plants are growing amazing, fish are colourful and thriving and to some people it would seem overstocked.
    And in case anyone is wondering - yes, I do check my water parameters. But not weekly, or even monthly. I barely even check to be honest... I do it on a whim when I feel like it and there has never been ammonia, nitrite. Only just nitrates which stay regulated by the plants at below 40ppm & I haven't lost a fish from the tank yet.

I would love to learn how to have balanced tanks that support themselves without adding chemicals and doing water changes every time the test strip says. i have 2 tanks so far but after watching your videos i plan on redoing them with a dirt sand substrate and lots of plants hopefully i can create nice balanced tanks.

    Finally, an explanation of balance that makes sense! I am binge watching all your videos and learning so much. I have trouble achieving balance in my 50 gallon tank in which I am trying to raise some goldfish. They keep eating my plants if I don’t feed them twice a day but when I do feed them my nitrates go sky high.

    • @FatherFish
      @FatherFish  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Goldfish can be as difficult as uaru, silver dollars, and pacu. Sand is a big help because it contains much of the kinds of food goldfish crave. Leave the lights on permanently but be mindful of the water heating up. LED or low wattage fluorescent is fine. One 40 watt tube is sufficient. That will grow algae in the sand which will keep the goldfish on the bottom feeding.

It was closed in the early 40's due to lack of manpower to keep it functioning caused by WWII. I visited the derelictf acility in the late 50's before it was demolished.

    Hello Father Fish Could you tell me if the author of the book Tropical Fish was William T Innes?

    • @FatherFish
      @FatherFish  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. The book title is "Ornamental Tropical Fish" It was first published in 1934. My grandmothehr gave me a 20hh edition copy in 1958.

      @@FatherFish I found a book by William Innes 1956 called Exotic Aquarium Fishes: A Work of General Reference. This book might also be a good source for those seeking to create a Balanced Aquarium. I will try and see if I can find the Ornamental Tropical Fish title as I did not find just Tropical Fish when I searched for that.

      @@FatherFish Ok Thank you! I will try to buy a copy. And do a bit more studying into the balanced aquarium principles. I have done a little reading of Diana Walstad's Ecology of The Planted Aquarium. And was also blown away by Justin's Ocean Aquarium, in San Francisco. His no water change, deep sand substrate and heavily planted tanks with all those healthy breeding fish. Just amazing to come across, these amazing hobbyists!

      @@carlsfishroom632 You are on the right track. Digesting the science taught by Walstad is a major step toward understand the complexity of a natural system. I hope to visit Ocean Aquarium and share practices with these wonderful aquaculturists. I am most curious about their experience in their home country of Burma. I feel certain they developed their practices of frugality and stability whhile there.

    I’m in a bit of a headache trying to determine the kinds of fish to keep in my upcoming community tank. I’m thinking of a German blue ram with tetras and rasboras. I didn’t want to add guppies or swordtails because i read about possible aggression in this mix, and different temperature requirements. Wanted to add angelfish but I read. That angels might eat tetras etc. does this all matter in an adequately planted tank? Oh my.

      start with a few and add more each week./ Some will be good and others will not. You will learn as you progress.

      Reduce nutrition in the water column. Deep sand bed is critical to keep the dirt in the dirt and not floating about in the water. Stop feeding and clean it up. Be sparing with nutrition.

    • @FatherFish

      +Cories prefer a sand substrate to a gravel one. I just talked to my brochis and they told me so in no uncertain terms. Most cories are outspoken about sand. It helps them keep their teeth clean. Those big rocks are hard on enamel. They also think you should subscribe, George.

    Hey father fish , I got a question for you about Florida fish store law .I went to my local fish store the other day and I politely ask if they would be interested in buying some Rio tapajos and turquoise rainbowfish, fancy guppies/endlers etc. And they said I needed a aquaculture certificate to sell them to them..ok so I looked into it and it's a 100$ a year but I don't see anything about it being law and wonder if the fish store is just bullsh@+ ing me!?? Have you heard of this before ..?... aquaculture certificate??

    • @FatherFish
      @FatherFish  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I trade with my hobbyist customers. If you want to sell a variety of fish you need a wholesaler license, costs more than $100. Your LFS does not want to deal with you, for what ever reason.
      The Ag license is not for selling. It is for raising, for maintaining a farm. BS would be an appropriate term.
      In reality a good LFS will always encourage customers to bring unwanted or excess fish to them. Store credit is an easy and effective way to deal with this. The reality is we do not want non native species released into local water.
