I saw her in London in 2016 with Alabama Shakes. Mesmerising. She just owned the stage. I've been watching live music for almost 60 years. I've seen Zeppelin, The Sones, David Bowie, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, James Brown, BB King, Thin Lizzie, and so on. Howard could only have been matched by James Brown. She is a force of nature, and her song writing is quite spectacular.

Nah, this isn't karaoke. Music is a living thing, it can breathe in and out and speak to the worries of today. Especially a song that spoke to the worries of its time. That being said, this is barely a cover anyway. Ask yourself if John Lennon would be more bothered or flattered by seeing someone make something new out of his work that might be more relevant to people today. I think the latter.
I often skip the performances. Not this one.

I was never a big fan of the Alabama Shakes but she's matured into a really powerful presence and voice.
I loved Alabama Shakes. I find her solo stuff lacks the punch they had because it sounds like a bunch session musicians just filling space.

I already liked Brittany Howard's work since seeing her on SNL a few years ago. Now, seeing her band (except for those actually singing) is working to prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2 (AKA "the corona-virus") makes me like her and her band even more.

and really, it's a response to the original. the original tried to say "there shouldn't be change, go home and stop worrying about it." while this one said "change is here and it's needed."

@@cageybee7221 Though I appreciate your liking this version (It's hot!), you should revisit the original because you are mischaracterizing it. There's nothing in the lyrics that implies there shouldn't be change or that you should go home and give up.
John Lennon was calling out hate and destruction as reflected in the violent extremism of the time (Marxists etc.). He was saying that people shouldn't follow political ideologies that promise freedom (but do not historically achieve it) and that true freedom starts with yourself; people freeing their minds of definitions and labels (the 1968 hippie version of "being woke").

You should check out the version by Nina Simone (which Brittany gets this arrangement from), if you don't know it. Nina reworks the song as a powerful civil rights anthem. Nina is serious, as always! Brittany is updating Nina Simone's version. "Backlash Blues" is another killer Simone song. 💜

This is why attending her show is top on my post Covid bucket list. She's up there with Prince, Carol Channing, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Charles and Anthony Gomes IMO of top performers of my time.
