This music was played last month when they brought my husband’s coffin in the church and they took the coffin out. What a lovely piece chosen by our son.
I play this every year on the anniversary of my husband's death. I still dance with him in our kitchen - and in my dreams. In tears - joy and sorrow. Love, beauty, fragrant flowers everlasting - his legacy, captured in this melody.
in our senior years my wife learned to play the violin and i learned the guitar. her favorite songs were lover waltz and ashokan farewell. she just passed away in nov 2021 and i will always love and remember her and hear her playing your songs. thank you
My fathers funeral was today, passing away at 80. He had played the violin from his teens and loved Ashoken Farewell and The Lovers Waltz. Ashoken was played at the beginning of his service and The Lovers Waltz while his photo celebration was played. This music will remain with me as long as I live, beautiful.
As a child, my grandmother (who raised me) would play this on her violin almost every single night as I went to bed and she passed away about a month ago and I would kill to hear her play it for me just one more time but this will definitely do almost as good 😌
This music is nothing short of astonishing. It is completely devoid of pretence, affectation or any kind of shallowness. In short, it tells the truth. It is simply about the notes....nothing more, nothing less. It is also played incredibly well! Thank you so much, Molly and Jay.
Astonishingly lovely. Touches the heart and soul of God's love for His creation. The thumbs down is from those who want only hatred and violence and ugliness.
This is the Gold Standard for Lovers Waltz! Authors of the tune performing it,with a great room, a very fine piano, and outstanding sound and video. Please circulate to your friends.
Hiraeth… it’s a welsh word that describes homesickness or loneliness. There’s really no translation for the word. That’s what feelings this evokes. Beautiful!
There is a monthly dance on the island where we live. They always play this song for the 3-steppers. When the song starts, it seems a veil of silence encompasses the dance floor as everyone stops talking, and starts to waltz. This piece is truly a work of beauty.
Just heard a scrap of this somewhere else, googled it and found my way here. If this doesn't make you feel good and put a smile on your face, nothing will.
Stumbled upon Jay and Molly the other night by accident and am freakin' speechless----HOW AMAZING their music is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so moved I cannot find words to describe their music...heavenly!
Moves me in a way I can't describe. My sister just died and we held each other and swayed together to this sweet music until my other sister who has also passed on took her in her arms and held her softty and swayed with her. they saw the other and forgave and comfort came to them..
Beautiful beyond words. This must surely be a tune sent by the angels to these two. You have to have the right kind of heart to hear this kind of music inside yourself. Thank you both. Thank you.
My son played this at his grandfather's funeral. Intensely moving...My dad would always request his grandson play this when he was amongst the living. Parents, invest in your children's music. There's no greater gift.
Jay & Molly are old friends of my Mom's. They're absolutely wonderful people, they used to play at Tree Star Coffee House at the Methodist church in Mt. Kisco, about 25 years ago now I guess. What a great piece this is here.
Aren't we lucky to have such talented people in this world, from whom such beautiful music flows, and that the internet has made it so accessible to us all? I would probably never have heard this wonderful piece, or indeed of Jay Ungar and Molly Mason and their wonderful music, had I not had TH-cam.
My brother played this song with a string quartet, and it was one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard- so is this performance. What a wonderful song!
One of my old mans favorite songs was an Asheton farewell. Just wish I could have played this for him on my violin. In my Dads passing days he woke up only two times, one with my little dog Heidi would jump upon his bed and when I would play the violin for him. I'm no Jay Unger, never will be. Just wish I knew about this song before my Dad passed. When I play it I say this is for you Dad.
There is something in this that is, for me, like no other music I've heard. It makes me cry every time I hear it. It's so beautiful. It's a surrender to grace.
When Jay and Molly first performed this on Prairie Home Companion, I fell in love with. My grandfather was a violin player, he called it a fiddle :) and this brought back fond memories for me. Years later, our daughter proudly walked down the aisle on her fathers arm, forgoing the tradition wedding music for The Lover's Waltz. Thank you Jay and Molly.
As a violinist/fiddler, I am so thankful you wrote Lover's Waltz. It it fills my heart and everyone else's, every time. This and Ashokan, what a joy to play! Bless you both, Jay and Molly. :)
These are the lyrics I think of when I listen to this breathtaking waltz... For all my life, I want you right here by my side My hand in yours, I need you right here by my side. I will take care of you and love you all my life Forever one, we’ll be husband and wife Through the years, I promise joy, I promise love, I promise laughter Please just stay with me, by my side And together we’ll build a life, be happy ever after If I can love you all my life. For all my life, I want you right here by my side My hand in yours, with prayers, we’ll take the adversity in stride. I’ll love you and care for you all my life Forever one, we’ll be husband and wife Through the years, I promise joy, I promise love, I promise laughter Please just stay with me, by my side And together we’ll build a life, live happily ever after If I can love you all my life.
Thank you so much. The words came so quickly and practically poured out on paper as tears rolled down my cheeks as I listened to this hauntingly beautiful waltz.
I'm a singer/songwriter, and my wife and I are a vocal duet. We absolutely love this melody, and hoped that we'd find lyrics to it. But apparently Jay and Molly wrote it to as an instrumental piece. I believe that's only because they were waiting for YOU to write lyrics to it. We are still performing to small audiences, and would love to be able to perform your lyrics to this melody. If I have your approval, I'll ask Jay and Molly for theirs. OK?.
OMG I have tears every time I hear this ....omg. Positively The Most Beautiful Waltz EVER Written ! Thank You ! I stopped telling my dance partners the song title because it scares them and they go stupid. Too bad. It's only a dance. Now I just say I don't remember.
Playing this for a concert. It's good to hear the writer play it, knowing how they wanted to play it. Not like bach songs, where it's ALWAYS other people playing it! Bravo! So lovely, and his double stops are perfect! and so are his grace notes. SO PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE IT!
This song reminds me of the first dance with my husband on our Wedding Day April 8th 2017.. We were both in period dress for 1865... Something in the music is so emotional it brings happy tears to my eyes.. Love it... The lyrics written by a listener on this page are beautiful as well.
It's amazing how the mixture of two instruments and their sounds can provoke beautiful feelings and touch the heart, without a word .... is the magic of music thanks Jay and Molly for giving his art and sensibility
These people make some of the most beautiful music I have heard of late. I have never heard of them before and am so darn happy I know who they are now. Exceptional.
Jay and Molly We played this as our last song for nearly 30 years at our monthly Swing Dance in West Hartford, CT. It was my and the crowds favorite song. Even after 30 years we looked forward to it and never got tired of waltzing to it. Thank you. Zel Dolinsky
Ironically neither of them our from the South, both live in New York, and the only affiliation they have with the South is through Ken Burn's The Civil War. . . so maybe not the "American South," but American nonetheless.
A great love song. shows how much they love each other and there music. This is the first song i ever heard from Jay and Molly and fell in love with there music.
For my wedding, my friend play this song on her violin as I walked down the isle. Such an beautiful, soothing, and breath taking song. Thank you for sharing your amazing talent with the world.

Jay Ungar Thank you and Molly for such a beautiful performance. Someone above has written some wonderful words to go with it. The tune and the words have a very emotional impact on me.
This music was played last month when they brought my husband’s coffin in the church and they took the coffin out. What a lovely piece chosen by our son.
I have requested it be played at my funeral.
Your funeral sounds lovely. I would love to come, please, Donald.
Sorry for your loss

What a great comment. Highlights the music!

Beautiful tune, played beautifully by the composer himself. What more could one ask?
Heaven- Jay and Molly... my neighbors in New England back in the 70s... I was so privileged...

That is Molly Mason.
Some people have a wierd music taste... I know it 😕

Never heard the term "3-steppers" before. Like it, and certainly fits. Great song.
I envy you God bless
I bet that is magical
I hope you are still dancing on the island where you live. I am dancing with you in my heart.
When music brings the emotion of tears....
I can just see my beautiful auburn-haired daughter and her future husband dancing to this at their wedding. It's perfect. Thank you for sharing it.
In times of trouble... this makes everything go away x
Just heard a scrap of this somewhere else, googled it and found my way here. If this doesn't make you feel good and put a smile on your face, nothing will.

Hi Jay and Molly, it's always good to hear this beautiful song from you - Danielle.
Beautiful rendition, Chris. Still playing simple lines with grace 😊
So absolutely gorgeous. Thank you, Jay and Molly for this beautiful rendition of an amazing piece.
For my wedding, my friend play this song on her violin as I walked down the isle. Such an beautiful, soothing, and breath taking song. Thank you for sharing your amazing talent with the world.
I must be getting old. I have always liked waltzes. Now, I love them dearly and this is the best of them. A beautiful, very meaningful, tune.
You play so beautifully and with so much emotion. If I listen to it very closely , it brings me to tears.
Ashokan Farewell and Lovers Waltz are two of my favourite pieces, which also sound great played with mandolin and guitar
I've heard this played on so many days, in so many ways, but there is none more hauntingly beautiful than this rendition.
This gorgeous melody was played at my daughter's wedding in Jerusalem as she was walking to the Chuppa. Breathtaking.
Our wedding party walked down the aisle to this song played by the Rigney Family. I found that version on ITunes. Very very beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!
made me tear up....
A piano and violin are the perfect instruments for this beautiful song.
