This is one of the BEST seed starting and using "grow light" videos I have EVER watched!!!!!! Especially with you explaining the lumens to look for. I knew there were "shop light" lamps that one can get that are created to mimic daylight to be more beneficial for office workers and students cooped up indoors for most of the day, so I figured there had to be bulbs/lamps one could get much cheaper than the advertised and labeled specifically "grow lamps".
You are definitely a blessing to us, may the LORD bless and keep you and yours!!!!!!!!!
One year we planted 100 tomato plants all from seedlings. We had an in ground garden and used rabbit poo as fertilizer. Holy moly we had over 1,000 lbs of tomato’s it was NUTS!!!

LOL!!! Sounds more like it was TOMATOES, to me!!! LMBO!!!! Sorry I couldn't resist!!! Your comment made me laugh, and the amount of tomatoes you produced does boggle the mind of someone just gardening for family and not so much for a living!!! I would bet you had a least double that unless you had a dry year, or finally just let em go!!
To save on electricity and lamp use, most seeds do not need light to germinate. But they do need heat underneath ! Once you see the first seed starting to pop, then put it under lights, keeping the lights about 1 inch above the plant to prevent it from getting leggy. As things start to grow either put a little fan on them or brush your hand across them each day, this strengthens the stem.
Not only does growing a garden nourish my body, it nourishes my soul !!!!

I have always kept all of my old tissue or paper towels rolls, for me they have worked great for starting new seeds. This helps in several ways, 1. It prevents "Root Shock" 2. It prevents wasting seeds or plants through "Thinning" and 3. When ready to transfer outside just dig the hole throw in some fish oil(Alaska's) cover with a little dirt, then a good pinch of wood ash (saved from the fire place) and plant the whole thing as is. What I've found the roll will force the roots to go deep instead of out and shadow, plus when they do hit that wood ash and fish oil...they'll take flight, I mean huge!!! the paper roll will keep your roots well watered so less watering during those hot summer months. I also, keep "The usuals"( Epsom salt, Eggshells and pinch of coffee grounds) on hand for a once a week or so feeding. I live in the city, but have converted my back yard into a 80 ft x 12 garden for vegetables and a 20 ft x 9 for herbs...Oh btw most of my seeds comes from the organic foods I've eaten, I just save their seeds to replant later. Sad to report tho, this winter's freeze killed all my winter's harvest😫 all gone.

We each have an imagination, creativity and the need to use them for being fruitful, multiplying, replenishing, and subduing. When I built my new gardens, it was quite a challenge I thought just about impossible. I thought to myself, "I can't believe I'm doing this!" So in my sixties I was still growing and learning. It's continued to be a challenge, very exciting, and good for me!!!
Thank you for another amazing video! We have our seed starting (and microgreens) growing trays set up in our dining room. All of our kids are grown and gone...so we usually eat in front of our computer (watching you and/or other amazing TH-cam channels, or the Cowboy Channel as we are rodeo fans!).
Last fall we were able to can 125 quarts of chili, spaghetti sauce, Pizzoli, and chili Verde. We canned 340 pints of tomato sauce, salsa, Hatch chilies, pickles, pickled garlic-pickled carrots-pickled radishes-pickled asparagus (which we didn't actually grow the asparagus but traded for with some amazing heirloom tomatoes). We also canned green beans and ham, pickled yellow and zucchini squash, and a great combo of pickled cauliflower, carrots, onions and garlic.
We eat a LOT of spicy food so we canned a whole bunch of jalapenos as well.
On top of all that, we dehydrated over 150 pints and 80 quarts of different veggies, and ground chilies (habanero, Scotch bonnet, Hatch, and even a little Scorpion chillies.
We also buy all the marked down mushrooms that we can buy at the store, dehydrate, and grind into mushroom powder.
90% of what we preserve is produced by our own garden...and even indoor gardening.
Learn this, use this, save TONS of money; help family and friends...and those that you may encounter who are in need!

P.S. The biggest problem that we have found is finding canning supplies (thank heavens we had a bunch before this COVID hit.... But that's why we started going with dehydration as an alternative method of food preservation.
Oh I am ITCHING to plant!!! I better inventory my seeds if I need to order. I never fail to be amazed at the bounty that comes from pushing a seed into the soil. It truly blows my mind and makes me so incredibly grateful for the command “Be fruitful and multiply”.

We've never used grow lights. Growing up all my grandparents ever used were the 5,500 Lumen LED shop lights from rural king. They work well and are cheaper than grow lights! Just a little cost effective plug. I love watching your videos! Thank you for all the helpful info!

The ones I have from Walmart are 5000 lumens and 6500 kelvin, for $18.97. You don't need expensive lights. These work well.
I start my seedlings in soil blocks. No plastic and the plant roots self prune. You should check them out.

I've used plastic and styrofoam cups for seedlings. Also, for inside growing to make the plants stronger we use a small oscillating fan a couple hours a day to create a very gentle breeze. The plants are stronger and won't fall over as much. Thanks for this video.
I’ve heard of doing that, it’s so cold here though that I’ve never been able to do it 😂 I just brush the seedlings with my fingertips quite a few times a day. It’s not as easy as the fan 😂
We germinate in our living room, where our wood stove is. Then move trays to the grow rack in another room. This works amazing and we always have super high germination rates💚

Love this video! Have watched it twice and am super inspired! You reminded me that I had used the same method with shop lights a few years ago, it worked great for me too. We moved and I haven't had another garden until last year. Started our seeds last year in a window with yes, spindly results. Have my shop light going again for this year and all the tomatoes have popped up and are growing beautifully. I had heard it is also good to put a fan in them the help them grow sturdier. Going to give that a try. Also, I made a wonderful discovery; K-cups from your coffee maker can be scraped out and make perfect seed starting cups!!! So glad to be able to repurpose them. Thank you Jill for all the valuable content you pack into your videos; so practical!!!

You've said for awhile now that seeds could be in short supply so I got my order in early. In fact they arrived late last week. Thanks for the new seed site ! I have been using baker seeds and tomatobob forever good to have a back up . I use seedlings for looks things but my local nursery is cheap and I split the 6 pack of veggies for $2.50with my friends so we split the cost on things we don’t want to start /need tons of like jalapeños or hot pepper plants ....Plus the local nursery they have been extremely helpful with questions ! Since I’m learning square foot gardening and companionship planting ! But for greens ,tomatoes , eggplants, zucchini I always start them myself !
What we did this year was we bought some $5-10 storage containers from Lowe’s because they are a foot deep drilled some holes and we have cauliflower, broccoli, chives, green onions, and kohlrabi in them and they r doing amazing!
That is so interesting regarding the light!! I never knew you could do it like that! I’ve always seen the grow lamps and they are just too expensive for me, but I can get with the cheaper ones for sure!!
You can also use the 5,500 Lumen LED shop lamps that Walmart sells (about $20); they work really well for me and use less electricity.

Great timing! I was just down in Colorado looking at grow lights/ lamps to start seedlings and the prices were crazy. The employees didn't know much (anything really) about the grow lights so I left empty-handed. Thank you for the information!

I just came across your videos a few days ago and have been binge watching. I use to buy all of my seedlings because I had no confidence that I could grow them. I watched TH-cam....The Rusted Garden and others and learned how to do it. There have been some failures but mostly successes. I grow all my veggies except the direct seeding ones and all my flowers. I use to spend about $300 a year on seedlings and some perennials. I reuse all my 6 paks and trays, I bought the inexpensive lights and heat mats so I've probably averaged $40 over the 3 years I have been doing this and I have way more seedlings, especially flowers!! I'm in a cold climate...4b with lots of snow from November thru April. So it can be done even without a greenhouse. I even did winter sowing this year. I got started late, about March, I think, but had great succes!!
I’m so ready for spring garden season and it’s just now fall lol. I have a freezer full of fresh organic, non gmo, all natural beef that I raised, a hog to put in the freezer and some other good stuff to hold me and the wife over till next fall. Im hoping I can grow at least 75% of our food next year. I love all the old ways and the simple life.

Thank you for you video. I'm starting my seeds for the first time this year and needed the encouragement. Also Baker Creek just sent out a notice that if you order now it'll take 30 days for the US and 60 days international to get your seeds. They are so overwhelmed with orders that they are shutting down their website for a couple of days to get caught up. I'm so glad my seeds from Baker Creek are scheduled to be delivered tomorrow.

I live in a house with a small yard I am starting a garden my seeds i planted look like they will not be ready to plant this year I am going to have to go buy plants that are already started! I use a germination warming mat. You can get them as a the kit of seed tray and dome.

I found new tray cells that costs more, but are really solid and durable. That's a must if you plan on using your trays for many years. Right now, I've found one place in UK and one in California.

You’re going to love it!!! Remember, “one for the rook, one for the crow, one to rot and one to grow”. In other words, plant more than you need. Seeds are cheap, experience is priceless. You can compost or give away extras.

This is an awesome video thank you so sooo much! I’ve been a veg gardener for over 30 years. I’ve always purchased my plants due mostly to fails on indoor starts. And I most certainly don’t want to spend money on grow lamps but I almost did this year because of everything that’s happening and what did happen last season. I’m so thankful you made this video. I'm so excited for this gardening season. Last year I started extra tomatoes and peppers (in case anyone needed any), I couldn't give them away so we planted all of them😂😂. Needless to say that I won't need that many tomatoes this year! I love all of the information that you share with us!
A pig or a few chickens can turn that bounty into eggs or meat. Our pigs LOVE getting tomatoes when I can’t keep up with it all. So do the chickens!

You should put a dome on your outdoor garden
Hello friend, thank you so much for all of your vast knowledge that you’re sharing with us. It’s very helpful to me as I only been able to grow tomatoes and herbs. One time years ago I planted a small garden against a fence line with towering trees on the east side of my house. 😂 Needless to say it was not very successful, except for the lettuce. 🤣 At that time, I had no idea that it should’ve been facing south. 😂 So what growing zone is your livelihood? I’m in zone 7a and my last frost date is 4/15. I going to plant some seeds today and realize I’m getting started late for the peppers, tomatoes, and broccoli thanks to one of your prior videos. I’m using toilet paper rolls and a couple of boot sized shoe totes. One is use for holding the makeshift seedling tray and the other flipped upside down as a cover. I’m going to put it outside on my deck. Do you think I should put tape around it to seal out the air?

What are your raised beds made from? It’s been 6 years since we moved and I had a garden, and hubby promised that this is the year to build one, but lumber for raised beds has become exponentially more expensive thanks to Covid. I’d love a long lasting alternative like you have!
Looks like some kind of corrugated metal. Birdies is a common brand here, I think one of the main American youtubers I have seen, ?MI gardener or epic gardener might offer them? Otherwise other metal beds
I use cow pots instead of peat pots, they work well and are made from a sustainable resource. 🐄

Did this last year, price of electricity in Nova Scotia might be more than just buying tomatoes from a market. The cost of living makes you question a lot of things. Still gonna do it this year though! Great video!!!
