    🇦🇺🦘 (viewed 7/03/2021) .. Still playing 'catch-up' with your videos, but enjoying the adventure through Tudor times. A very sad end for one of Henry VIII's previous favourites. I Doubt he was guilty of treason! Thank you Claire 🔔👑👍

    Thank you, Claire, for helping me understand more clearly the tangled web of connections between the people and factions that made up Henry VIII's court and inner circle. While I am familiar with many of the names, you really flesh them out and bring them to life.

    • @ruthgoebel723
      @ruthgoebel723 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree. These interwoven names and relationships can become a bowl of alphabet soup after a while. Claire surely helps us understand who is who and helps us make sense out of it.

    Really interesting Claire! The line in-between being a favourite and a traitor was so thin! Was Henry really so thickle or was he so worried about being betrayed he believed all his advisors? Xx

    My impression from "sticky end" was that Carew's was one of those awful executions by an angry mob, or by a drunk or incompetent executioner.

    Was there anyone in this group of the King's favorites who noticed how many people were getting executed, and found a way to slip off into obscurity to stay alive? I mean it seems like Alice in Wonderland with the queen of Hearts shouting off with their heads.
    You mentioned Thomas Cromwell; Have you told us what you thought of the series Wolf Hall?

    I have been binge watching your videos every since I found this channel. I really love these videos and you are absolutely lovely as well. You are so easy to listen to and you tell things really well (even for someone like me, who's national language isn't English). It's so exciting to learn new things every day, even though the topic was not new to me sometimes, you still make it interesting and enjoyable to listen to. And always there's some details that I didn't know already and that is quite exciting!
    Love from Finland!

    Sir Nicholas Carew is my 19th great grandfather. I think you are looking at Henry VIII through rose coloured glasses. He was basically a lecherous state sponsored serial killer. Sir Nicholas was raised beside the future king as his brotherly companion and was very loyal to the point of damaging his own self interest. He tied to keep the king grounded. And could get away with truth telling up to a point. He was the kings best jouster and had a field at Greenwich gifted for hosting tournaments. He was praised by the King of France as well for his diplomatic and languages ability. He was captain of Calais for a time and managed business to the kings advantage. He was Henry’s fixer regarding the ladies. First putting Anne Boleyn forward then liaisons with Jane Seymour. Despite his moral conflict and objections. He put up the dwarf jester to mock Ann Boleyn (Nicholas’ cousin) to prick Henry’s conscious. To no avail. He didn’t abandon the jester and physically prevented the king from cutting him in two with a sword and then hid him in his estate. They eventually fell out during a game of lawn bowls where Nicholas spoke his mind honestly regarding Henry’s constant philandering. This resulted in his exile from court and trumped up treason trial. As for his prosaic speech at his execution, that was a show of being cavalier and shouldn’t be taken as an admission or not given under extreme duress.

    Wasnt Carew brave/crazy to shelter someone who Henry was angry with. He seems to have diced with deathl but intrigue was part of Henry's court. Henry seems to have lashed out at everyone, including Cromwell at this time. I'm from Exeter so this is of extra interest to me.

    Hi Claire Just wondering if there is more in the records of his trial and what he actually was accused of to fill out the background etc on this treason charge, which sounds to be a Cromwellian construct. Please advise in a future video if you can. Thanks so much , really enjoy your videos.

    I have a question, not sure if anyone else has asked but: How did Princess Elizabeth feel about her mother Anne Boleyn being executed? How could Henry take that little girl’s mother away from her? Did he even care how she would feel?

    It's a wonder anyone ever wanted to be at court. Currying favor on one hand, losing your head on the other. Why did they think it was worth the risk? Were these people paid big to carry Henry's cup or help him get dressed? I know that sort of 'job' was considered to be a good one, but why? Weren't they bored with these 'jobs'? Wouldn't they rather be at their own estates running them? Would love to understand the psychology of the day!
