I love this Dempsey, I realize it's not an electric blue but it does not seem like the very pale ones I've seen either. Is this a blue gene Jack Dempsey? I want to get a baby one to grow and want it to look dark but with blue on the body yet not the Electric Blue, please advise...
+Dan Seabreeze Jack dempseys don't stay pale. Put them over dark substrate and they will darken up. They may turn lighter color if they are stressed (such as fish store conditions)... They are also a different pattern when breeding. If you want a jack dempsey that looks like this, give it good food, good clean water, secure hiding spots, and dark substrate. Besides the tank size, they are very easy to care for. ;)
I see a lot of comments that JD's only get to 10" max but I think that's a bit conservative. I have a 5 year old JD that I recently moved from a 60 gallon tank to a 120. While moving the tanks into position I put the JD in a 12" diameter bucket for a couple minutes before he went in the new tank. I was surprised to see that he was touching both sides of the bucket meaning he was slightly longer than 12". Given decent water conditions these guys can grow pretty big. What I like about them is they are pugnacious enough to give them that cichlid personality but typically they aren't so mean that you can't keep them with other fish. Mine shares a tank with an ancient (23 year old) clown loach and they are fine together. Occasionally the Dempsey will give the loach a little chase to let him know who runs the tank but he never harms the loach. They actually swim together most times. Even though the Dempsey occasionally acts a little grumpy he accepts the old loach as his tank mate and doesn't hurt him.
ThePorkChopExpress86 you are right they can be good tank mates with a lot of fish I have 2 JDs with 2 green terrors (one is 13") 2 tinfoil barbs, a cigar shark, a 12" frontosa, 20 baby lemon yellows a 4" electric blue johanni, 2 plecos, a neon gold barb (I think lol), 3 dalmation mollies, 2 angels and a tiger barb. they can live with pretty much anything as long as they all have their own little area. My frontosa lives in a big cave and display really nice purple and blues when the dempseys come around.
their size really varies. mine is a girl who i got from a previous owner who had her for a while and she is only 7 inches but many reach 12-14 inches but like most fish it depends on housing, parameters, food, tankmates, heritage and habitat as well as if they are a boy or girl
My jack is about a foot and a half long now. Same with my parrot cichlid. Two oscars. A knife. And an electric blue jack also live in the tank with no aggression.
How long did it take to get that big? Mine is growing but kind of slow. Also it is terrified of me for some reason? What size tank is that also? Ok th a is and cheers to a beautiful fish!
My JD I had did not take kindly to Oscars he actually killed one at a earlier age. I've seen it many times working in a pet store as a youth the Dempseys just did not like Oscars
It's unexpected to me since JD's are usually shy and hide easily yet Oscars aren't shy and don't usually hide. I did see a video or two where the JD really bullies the Oscar to the point of killing it even it being the same size or slightly larger.
Dan Seabreeze Yes, my JD would keep to himself in his pot, the second a fish he perceived as a threat, would cross. He'd be outside to show force. Really would like an oscar in my Tank just not willing to take the chance.
I remember when I had bought another big jack. I have that I bought from pet smart over 6 yes ago. It's big now and I have one that is a Lil smaller then my first one. So when bought bigger one and had put in with those two. It was like the BLOODS and CRIPS in that thing. They beat the hell out of that thing. I thought it was going to gold its own. I was wrong and it didn't. They knocked half the scales off it
I got my JD from Petsmart which was in a tank with an Oscar. The poor Oscar was considerably larger than my JD and he was torturing it where the Oscar had ripped fins and was almost motionless in a corner.
my bumblebee cichlid KILLED my oscar...i thought oscars were big and bad...i guess not in this case.....he was being sucked up by the filter the next morning from being stressed and chased by the bumblebee cichlid...but my jack dempsey is doing WELL thank u
Martin's Aquarium used to have a Jack Dempsey over two feet in Jenkintown p.a.about 47 year's ago in a 600 gl.tank not exaggerating. My dad used to take me and my brother there I am 58 I have been raising fish ever since. I have a black piranha for 18 years very experienced.

@@amazingaquaticsandexotics3030 You were not there to see the Jack Dempsey, I just seen your stupid comment, You probably were not even born 47 years ago, I had some big Jack Dempsey's in My day I've been raising fish longer than you have been alive. @@amazingaquaticsandexotics3030 They do exist you just haven't seen them. I had one 16 3/4 of an inch when he died. I had him in a 55 gallon fish tank. I measured him when he passed away from old age.

I'll have to make a vid of my 13 year old JD and send you the link. My boy might be bigger. Does yours have tiny teeth? Mine bit me the other day for the first time in 13 years and broke my skin! Gotta love Jack Dempsey's though! How old's your boy?
He is not that big there is one at the pet store more than double that size by my house along with the biggest convict I have ever seen apparently its 10 years old.
i have measured it player. just over 12" . might not be the largest out there. that part was kind of a joke. .. but i sure don't see many bigger. cheers. ;)
I would say hes on the bigger side of an average adult. Not the biggest ever. I had a beauty bout that size like you'rs, until my Jack Dempsey female destroyed him pretty much overnight.
Jack Dempsey is my all time favorite fish, what a beautiful specimen
Thanks for sharing your fish. I think Jack Dempseys are stunning. Yours is gorgeous!!
Nice jack dempsey can’t wait until my jack demsey gets all of its colors and big like that very beautiful fish
such an amazing fish I love chiclids and there many colors and sizes not to mention body variations its simply breath taking.
I've seen 14" jacks but this one is for sure up there,,,, beautiful fish man,, stunning
Even the oscar’s scared
Seraphim City my 12inch lemon tiger Oscar has killed 4 Jack dempseys they were all full grown that’s why I no longer believe in Oscar tank mates
@@pizza4681 Fish have some personality. Mine Oscar was 2x bigger than GREEN Terror yet wasnt able to compeed.
I put my male and female Jack Dempsey in the local viewing fish pond 4 years ago and now there is 70 plus the biggest one in there is about 15 in

Stress and water temperatures change their coloring
How are we supposed to know how big it is? There's no reference point to judge how big it is
Donnie White you see that’s why we will never know if it’s click bait or not
Although it did size up to an adult Oscar so it’s large but probably not the biggest
Just look at the Oscar dude
@@OutdoorWalker how do we know how big the Oscar is dude?
Exactly what I was thinking
nice and huge dempsey you got there mate..

i got 3 oscars a arrowana and jack dempsy in a 125 but yours is amazing.

I was considering buying one that’s why I searched vids of how big they get so I’m ready
He is HUGE
That's a bold claim considering you didn't measure or provide any reference points... still a nice fish though👍🏻
Yeah, I agree. Just one of those things that it got so big I personally haven't seen or could imagine one bigger. lol

Hi, how many centimeters is this Jack Dempsey?
i just both electric blue jack dempsey last week. it is big but not the biggest. the size is 11inches.
Mines only like 1.5 inches still a pup but aggressive little thing. It's smallest in the tank and is the boss.
In my 150 I have a 10 inch jd and a 11 inch Oscar never had a problem 3 years going
Very nice👍
How do I get my Dempsey dark colour like that mines kinda pale some days sometimes dark
Good quality water and a tank he or she is happy with ie tank mates, decor and quality fresh food
What do u feed him?
@@WilsonTheFrenchie crustations, worms and anything they'd eat in the wild mate👍😉
I feed mind blood worms and omega pellets I got his colour back up by putting more decor in the tank he loves it
yeah, good water quality and food for sure. ... another thing is I always use a black back ground. it seems to darken most fish up

can I put jack Dempseys in a 55 gallon tank together?
Wouldnt suggest it with their size as a 55 gallon is only 13 inches deep. Id suggest 100 gallons or more if ur putting more than 2
75 gallon minimum for a pair
overfed
T-roy Animal Guy Nope it's a old JD
@jamesmillar100 no , not yet. i need to though. i will look for it.
Sweeeeeeet
Was it a female?🤔
Haven't seen 2 many that size facial features indicate female,
jack is not big Oscars are small........you must pellet feed......try shrimp or pinky mice.......Oscars look like 2 month olds....
Impressive but honestly mine is definitely longer than yours not thicker but definitely longer lol that’s what she said
How you get yours so big mine 7 1/2 all most 8
i have had many JD's in my day and for some reason this one just kept growing and growing. ... just genetics i think more than anything.
