Chase, it is so refreshing that a young man such as yourself possesses such maturity and insight into the Carpenters' music. If you haven't already reacted to their gorgeous ballad, For All We know, please do. It won the Academy Award for Best Song in 1971. It was written by two founding members of the popular soft rock group Bread. It's yet another Carpenter masterpiece.
When I was a kid, this song and "Yesterday once more" always cheered my heart. Didn't realize they were published the year I was born until now I just check them! I am happy to see those beautiful songs are heard by young generation like you! So good to see you enjoy them like I did!
The Carpenters' single, "Sing," was a #3 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1973. Written by Joe Raposo for the children's PBS series, Sesame Street, the song had already been recorded by Barbra Streisand when Karen and Richard Carpenter encountered the tune while appearing as guests on Robert Young's TV special, "Robert Young with the Young." Certain the song had hit potential, Richard Carpenter chose it for single release, to the bafflement of many at A&M Records. But the simple, singalong tune reminded him of popular songs in his youth, such as "Getting to Know You" from "The King and I." The resulting single was the duo's first to feature additional singers, in this case, the Jimmy Joyce Children's Choir. The recording also marked the return of Karen Carpenter to the drums, a role she had largely relinquished to studio drummers on single releases following the duo's 1969 debut. Released in advance of the duo's fifth studio album, "Now & Then," "Sing" peaked at #3 for two weeks in April (Survey Weeks - April 21 - April 28, 1973), becoming their seventh single to reach Gold record status.
raybrown3667, thank you for the background on "Sing". Not only was Richard Carpenter a genius as a musician and arranger, but he had the ability to recognize the potential greatness in a song especially when interpreted by his incomparably gifted sister, Karen. The gracefulness, joy, and beauty of the Carpenters' contributions to music are astonishing. The Carpenters will be appreciated as long as we have ears to listen.
This song was on the children's TV show Sesame Street, and that's how I came to know the Carpenter's. The children's choir is definitely unique to yet another Carpenter's hit. I loved the song as a child and sang it all the time, skipping down the street, on my way to kindergarten.. xo sweet memories, indeed. ^_^
Hi Chase. Haven't heard this song in a long time. Such a simple song, but with Karen singing it it becomes beautiful and magical. Karen Carpenter could have sang a restaurant menu and it would have been beautiful. One of the best voices ever. "Yesterday Once More" is a Carpenters song you should check out.
Linda Ronstadt is another female singer from the same time as Karen, who is in the same tier as her with a phenomenal voice, and you absolutely should listen to some of her songs, and I think she’ll be another absolute favorite of yours. Look her up on Wikipedia. Linda had a powerful and highly versatile voice and sang tons of styles during her career including rock, pop, country, folk, punk/new wave, old standards, light opera, and even Latin/Mariachi! Linda and Karen are frequently named together as the two best female voices of the past 50 -60 years. I recommend you check out the 2019’documentary about Linda Ronstadt called “The Sound of My Voice” . it is excellent, and you’ll learn such great things about her. She is one of the absolute GOATs
Chase, please take listen to "someday" for some reason not that requested, but it is one ofmy favorites. Karen was only 19 yrs when her and her brother released this gym.
Hi Chase, you have the basic info I see. I’m going to give you a hidden treasure. When Carpenters toured they would bring on stage a local children’s choir to help sing the song Sing. If you look for their Budokan concert from Japan, it’s on TH-cam. Not only did they have a Japanese children’s choir as they did, Karen sang the song in JAPANESE! How special is that, no prompter, cards nuthin! She memorized the song in Japanese. I’m going to recommend a young singer who has similar vocal qualities to Karen. Meaning she’s an Alto and has a deep tone to her voice. Karen was a Contralto, one notch lower. The song I’m going to recommend is an audio only track and a cover of a classic song. It is a different arrangement though you may not be familiar with the original by Ray Charles. It’s a classic. Tori Holub (pronounced Huh-Luhb, soft vowels) I do think you will enjoy her sound. When she covered a Carpenter song, watch out, she’s good. But we’re going in a different direction as you’re still on the Karen learning cycle. I like that, I’m an OG Carpenters fan from way back then. I’m going to give you a keyword search as a link has failed me more than not. Tori Holub Georgia On My Mind Yes the song is Georgia on my Mind. Enjoy! More discovery ahead! Joe
I saw the Carpenters in 74 or 75 in Champaign at the University of Illinois. They brought a local children’s choir on stage for Sing. It was magical. Also, listen to Tori Hulub’s renditions of the Carpenters. Closest voice to Karen’s I’ve ever heard.
Love your reactions to Carpenters. There is a song called "Your The One" which was released on an album called Lovelines by Richard after she passed. You want heavenly that song will do it. Like I have said picking a favorite is like picking your favorite child. Karen Carpenter one in a creation.
Actually if look up Karen's self titled album. She recorded Lovelines on it. She was told that they didn't want her to release a solo album. But it was released in 1999. The Richard remixed it to release the album Lovelines. There are some ones on her solo album are very good
Chase, great reaction on your part. The Carpenters were very popular in the 1970's you might want to watch: 'The Karen Carpenter Story 1989' that is available on TH-cam. Another group you should review is: Electric Light Orchestra (ELO). Their live performances are great. I really like their song 'Rockaria'. 😊
I've just discovered your channel and I'm loving it! Perhaps seeing a youngster enjoy the music I grew up with is a kind of validation of my own youth and my own tastes. One day you'll come across Kate Bush (perhaps you already have, via Stranger Things) and listen to Wuthering Heights. I can't wait until you do so.
Hi Chase i love your reaction 😇it wouldn"t be nice if you react another Carpenters song a big hit in UK and some otber countries "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" recorded in 1977. This is amazing song which is long at 7 minutes. Stay safe and thank you.
There is a singer called Rumer who sings a song like Karen. But no one sings like Karen in my eyes. The song is called Slow please listen to it if you can.
