I blame the people blinded by “nostalgia” (like the Star Wars hyperfans) not having enough courage to just let it go, and ipad kids asking for their parents wallets/credit cards lmfao 💀
I'm one of those people who'll straight up argue there's more shit star wars media than good now. Which means that the continuation of it as a franchise has actively devalued what it could've been.
@@literallylaw Absolutely! No unfortunately I was small when the first Star Wars came out, but I loved the shooty pew pew space fights for my age at the time XD that said however, even though I haven’t grown up with it being my favorite series, I know enough well how it devolved through time. Same with Star Trek, and rinse and repeat with other franchises. Apparently G.I Joe is still a thing, it’s like bro….I get it, they were once awesome back in the day, but would you rather watch your favorite things go out in a blaze of glory? Or watch it age like a bloated corpse in the summer sun😅💀I’d rather have the latter, lol. Speaking of which, makes me sad watching how Titanfall went downhill too 😭 man I feel like I need to take a shower and escape for a minute bro 😅…….
God. Yeah, I almost forgot that they fucked Star Trek too with Picard. Shit really do be bleak. Titanfall deserved better. It being taken from what was essentially the most revolutionary Multiplayer FPS series of all time, to becoming another fucking battle royale is an actual crime against reason. Yeah, I might need a shower too after being reminded that everything I've ever loved has been butchered by the bastards up top.
Loved the video man, like you said the famous quote of “all good things must come to an end”, this is so accurately true, to every single thing we loved and grew up with, and I would argue that most others out there would agree. Even my grandparents had this problem with things they once’s loved and grew up with, they got sick of seeing re-runs of their shows and stuff they grew up with, and when things got “resurrected” they were sorely disappointed. Wish gems we loved would just be left alone to age like a fine wine, and not sour soiled milk on a hot summer afternoon because of greedy shady companies 💀
Glad you ended up enjoying this one as well :) Yeah, my parents always complain when they see another sequel to things they grew up with as well. I think it's just logical that we would like things that feel complete. Like, we don't want something to go forever because it means we'll always lack a truly satisfying conclusion. But as you correctly point out, so long as greedy corporations continue to exist, nothing is sacred.
I absolutely resonate with that. That’s also how I felt about the Mass effect “franchise” and I know it’s not gaming, but the lord of the rings and the hobbit franchise movies. It’s good to just let them stay as they are. We didn’t want “rings of power” fans even strongly let them KNOW that….they still spat on Tolkiens grave. And what happened to the mass effect trilogy was a mess, it’s a gem, but after “Andromeda” and watching the recent “teaser trailer” of the mass effect universe continues……I’m like no. Please no…..y’all did enough damage to it 🤦🏻♀️
God, how are you hitting literally every single thing I agree with? 😂 The original Mass Effect trilogy, with a bit of ignoring how meh the ending to three was, would honestly imo have gone down as an absolute classic if they'd have left the IP well enough alone after. Those games were such incredibly solid pieces of fiction. Every character was so well written, had an arc, most of the crew were even iconic for the entire medium. Also a massive LOTR nerd, so yeah, what they did with Rings of Power was just fucking insulting. Then again, it's Amazon, I hated them long before that point and all that's achieved is I hate them even more now, but they made it more personal. Tolkien rolls in his grave. I think so long as unchecked greed and the potential of corporations squeezing every last penny they can out of existing IPs remains the norm, nothing we love or enjoy will ever remain untainted forever. The sludge of the capital machine covers every inch of reality until it consumes it all.
@@literallylaw Lol absolutely agreed! Always nice to find like minded people like you, even if we don’t agree on some things it’s just nice to have a civil discussion about things 😊 nice to meet you friend, and happy to be a part of your channel and journey through its growth. Godspeed bro 🙏🏻💝
I'll never forget what the Legends of Grimrock devs said regarding making a sequel. They made 2 because they thought they could make enough meaningful improvements on 1, but after 2, they felt like they couldn't improve on the game more than they had, so they just ended the series. I wish this outlook was more common.
Thanks bud. One can only hope one day one of these other videos will blow up like the Multiplayer one. Especially since I think my work only got better with some of these.
I always find videos on gaming these days are very repetitive and all say the same thing a different way, That's why I love your videos your view points feel so fresh and original, keep it up man great content ❤
Welcome aboard! I don't have too many vids right now, but I try to make almost all of them feel sizeable, so hope the others manage to keep you entertained meanwhile :)
I get people like the IP of a franchise or whatever but people gotta understand the original creators who made those brands so special to us are most of the time not part of that brand or company anymore. it's just a bunch of new people keeping this thing alive for the money and at that point it's really sad. these talented creators who brought us amazing games rarely got the change to experiment and try new stuff it feels like lately, once a publisher sees a formula makes money, they pump that out until it doesn't then make minor changes or selling us a knock of classic version. it's just sad.
Your so on point here for every second, since the big gaming franchises has gone stagnant over the years I been getting into indie games a lot more for these very reasons you explained, heck as a huge halo fan I only play halo infinite from time to time, compared to halo 1 to 3 I played them endlessly and that tells it all right there
This the reason why we get a new 3D Mario game after YEARS have passed. I mean... 1996. SM64 2001. Sunshine 2007. Galaxy 2010. Galaxy 2 2013. 3D World 2017. Odyssey 2021. Bowser's fury Every title is different in some ways, it never gets stale and every game is endlessly replayable!
Mario is Nintendo’s mascot game character. His presence is the franchise more than him recycling like the same shooter over and over again. I think Mascot games are a special case. You can pop a mascot in a lot of things…from a platformer to a racing game to a big brawl game like Smash bros and yeah it’s kind of a franchise but since he’s an immortal mascot the lore is loose at best and being generally tweaked and reinvented per game.
If halo ce-3 got an update adding offline bots so i can play private matches when i get the urge, I'd be happy with the series resting. Also hoping Id software moves onto a new ip or ressurecting a different old ip after doom the dark ages, since its a prequel. With these three games the new doom story will have been told.
Another great video man. Really love your content. Another good example of a franchise left to sit on ice for a long time is Bioshock, because Ken Levine just pretty much said. It's done. There's nothing more we can tell in the Bioshock universe. Now unfortunately there's rumors of a live service Bioshock in the works which has me wanting to crawl into a hole and die, but I’m glad it hasn’t been ruined for the last 10 years lol.
Absolutely, one thing you can give Ken Levine is he was always a creative first. Didn't want to beat his ideas to death. Just let them be remembered for what they were. Glad you liked it :) getting nice comments like this is the main thing I get out of it other than just getting my thoughts out. So I appreciate it.
Also, man I was trying to place why your name was familiar to me, I watched a bunch of your vids back when I was still playing D2! What a small world eh? Glad to see you're going strong bro
@@literallylaw that’s wild! And thank you. Well just want you to know, you can count me as a fan of yours. Your thoughts on games resonates with me so much man. I'll always be looking forward to your content
I super appreciate that bro, it's nice to have you here. Might go binge a few of your destiny vids just to see what's even happening in that space these days XD
@@literallylaw destiny is a wreck man. I mainly just talk about it's issues these days, and post some fun d1 stuff cuz I go back and play it pretty regularly.
A perfect example of this is the new S.T.A.L.K.E.R installment,AFTER 13 YEARS YOU BRING ANOTHER? THE TRILOGY WAS PERFECT AND YOU DECIDE AFTER 13 YEARS TO BRING ANOTHER?
I know people complain about Nintendo putting some of their franchises on ice because they want a new game in the series, but I think because of that it gives them time to come up with ideas for when they bring them back. Metroid and Pikmin are great examples of this, they’re franchises that took a break (or multiple) only to come back with new masterpieces chock full of original ideas. Even their bigger franchises follow this trend to a lesser extent because we only get big new Mario and Zelda games once every few years.
At this point I'm 100% convinced that CoD is secretly funded by the US army to get new recruits that is why they pump them out every year, just looking at the campaigns and how they twist the realities to make the Americans look like the good guys always is more than enough propaganda to make people enlist, take a look at how MW 2019 twisted the real life highway of death incident into their favor. Also, some games deserve to lay dormant until enough new refreshing ideas can be implemented into the game.
I mean, you're not that far off. They absolutely have deals with the military to get a look at their equipment and model weapons etc. So they CAN'T really depict them negatively because they'll have less access. The US military have always done that, did it with the new Top Gun too, by playing along with media, they get to ensure they're never depicted badly. Also, yeah, 100% to that second point.
I don’t think the problem is that the games have ‘run their course’ or ‘run out of good ideas’; I think it’s just that the industry as a whole has degraded, and games aren’t being produced to the same quality as they used to be.
This may be a hot take, but I love videos on negative topics, especially yours, so feel free to make as many as you like. It really is a shame, for me the ones that hurt my soul the most are Assasins's creed and Battlefield. I still remember feeling so damn excited for Bf1, it was one of the triple A games I can count with my hands I HAD to buy day 1, especially to play with a good old friend. Dude we played that game for hundreds of hours I don't even know how, Bf1 was so fucking fun man, and so was 4, played that one a lot with my friend as well. And that's funny because, today I kinda see those games as generic, you know, average military FPS, now that I started playing a wide variety of games over the years, i'm sure i'll enjoy them if I go back and play them, even if by myself, but I'm pretty sure it won't be the exact same experience it was all those years ago. Assasin's creed, ugh, it hurts man, for me that franchise ended with black flag, which is also my favorite, I don't even remember the games past that point, that's how irrelevant they are to me. But oh boy, Assasin's creed origins, i'm sorry if this will offend someone, but to me that game and all past that are fucking dog shit man. Listen, I like rpg's, but mixing that with my immersive adventure game I was used to, to the point where i'll go to a zone and the enemies kill me in one hit and are pretty much immortal? No.Fucking.Thanks, not with assasin's creed, is this childish? I don't know, maybe, but I just hate the direction they took man, that franchise could have perfectly ended with black flag for me, MAYBE syndicate. I'm not gonna lie, I used to have that mentality of not wanting anything I like to end, but I eventually realized that, not only is life like that, but it's also the right thing to do. It's sad to see your favorite franchise end yes, but it's the right thing to do when the time is right and there's no more point in continuing.
Loved reading this just cause it tells me my video invoked a lot of the same emotions that I was feeling when making it. I agree, Black Flag was the peak of AC and I liked the series less and less after. I did the same thing with BF1 even, bought it for myself and a friend day one and we loved it. But yeah, a lot of people prefer the negative videos more, I've seen that in analytics lol, I'll try and keep a mix on the channel, cause I can think of a lot of crap about this industry to complain about lol.
So it's a feature in adobe premiere? I've never seen that before I thought it was something youtube added in themselves lol. The like button is below the actual video so how can you edit it? That's crazy!@@literallylaw
I would argue that Deus Ex: Human Revolution even though it was well received by the media and fans in retrospective the game was undercooked for it's scope. Thats why in 2013 they released a Director's Cut with quite a few changes. This being from the perspective of more of a purist in terms of immersive sims. Human Revolution had to be released and marketed on the the mainstream consoles at the time and this constrained the gameplay design a lot more than the original which was first developed for the PC and then ported to PS2 with quite a few limitations. Prey and Dishonored being better examples of modern immersive sims done right that also work on consoles.
I'd say you're right that's it's a lot less of an immersive sim than the original. But that wasn't my point. I don't think a sequel has to be exactly like it's predecesor, in fact that's one of the things I despise about franchises. Human Revolutions was what it was. The reason I loved it was because it felt like at the very least they had an idea and a story they actually wanted to tell in the universe. One that remained thematically cohesive with the established world. It wasn't just using the name of the franchise for the sake of it. Or pumping out a reskinned clone.
I agree with most of what you said, so in contrast I will go on the defense: if they are going to keep making similar games, it only makes sense that they use established IPs, this absolutely kills the identity of the IP over time, but at the same time it (almost) guarantees that their 75-250 million dollar development budget will be made up for if the IP alone sells like hot cakes. For example I disagree to a point with CoD, with MW2019, they vastly improved the gameplay, mechanics, and for those who care graphics were much needed. Before that Ghosts improved all three again. The problem is that people who casually watch and/or play them, won't notice it very much. Another problem is that there are 3 studios that make a CoD game each and they basically have a cycle, and within a cycle, the games are extremely similar. I would say CoD goes like this: CoD1 => CoD2 => CoD4 => Black Ops 1 => MW3 => Ghosts => Infinite Warfare => MW2019 => MW2 2022, so out of 18+ CoD games (less than)only half of them are actual improvements, the other ones in between are just filler, though CoD3 tried some cool things. Now for sure story/campaign wise, that is cheap to redo the Modern Warfare series, no doubt about it. EA sports games have been trash for ages and they on purpose make them a complete mess, so that there is hope next year would be better. There is alway something(usually a lot) wrong about each one. Edit: I'm also waiting for the gloruous day when Prince of Persia is revived and revived properly, like doom 2016 revived its franchise.
@@literallylaw I started with Prince of Persia 3D/Arabian Nights which for it's many flaws had many possitives and then went back to the 2D ones and they were very good for their time, but the Ubisoft Trilogy was just amazing.
The first of the Ubi trilogy has something I've never seen replicated that well even in modern media. One of the best naturally occurring romances between two characters in a game.
@@literallylaw Yup Sands of Time had the original creator of Prince of Persia behind it and he managed to put a lot of his ideas in Sands of Time thanks to Ubisoft's bigger budget and creative freedom given to him. He however did not take part in the second game of the trilogy(Warrior Within/Rival Swords), but came back for the third one Two Thrones/Revelations.
Once upon a time "new IP" wasn't a word in most people's vocabilaries, because it was assumed that a new game was actually _new_. There were sequels and spin-off, of course, but it wasn't considered the default.
Those days are unfortunately long gone. I still remember going into game stores and picking out some random new experience I'd never even heard of till the moment I saw it on the shelf.
@@literallylaw It's still kind of alive in indies, but bigger/AAA games and movies have all devolved into new ideas being the exception. It's all a bit sad, really. There's nothing wrong in letting things die, or rest, when they've run their course.
Yeah but with indies you don't really find them the same way. I only find good indies from recommendations, online stores are flooded with so much trash now you can't just pick one at random and enjoy the experience most of the time. Absolutely on letting things just die and moving on to new ideas.
I agree a lot with this video. I've seen many games that have just dissapointed me due to their devs, one good example for me is how Valve is treating TF2 and their other games ofc. Currently I'm rooting mostly for Ghost Ship, loving how they're doing this on DRG and hopefully they don't become a bunch of assholes
Yeah, Valve really screwed the pooch with how they've abandoned TF2, especially when it has such a loyal following and massive player base compared to even a lot of modern MP games. And I agree, DRG is my go to game at the moment and I really do hope the devs keep up their incredible work but also the ethic they've shown with not being scummy.
It’s really sad that we now look up to game company’s not because there making the top of the line games. Now we have to look at these game companies in hope they won’t become another fat pig company. It’s really sad
Creatively bankrupt. That's really what it is. No unique or interesting original ideas anymore (very few exceptions with a small number of indie titles) but truly, not an ounce of creativity or risk taking going on and it's led to such stale repetitive "safe" game releases. It genuinely pisses me off so bad. It's just sad. Only 8 minutes in so far but just had to comment my thoughts on your point about Creatively Bankrupt.
Yeah, that's the thing I feel like we're missing out on so many potential games that will just never be because of how safe they're playing it with franchises.
I agree with this. Halo should´ve been considered being done after the Bungie era, and I already feel that ODST wasn´t really needed either. Playing Reach and 1-3 feels like a complete, closed Story that didn´t need further games after it, and no RTS and Twin Stick Shooters on the side either for that matter. Call of Duty having 2 sub-series called Modern Warfare without the franchise having any downtime at all feels like a practical joke. Assassin´s Creed did everything it needed, and really could do, once they released Black Flag. And I´m saying this despite generally liking Rouge and fixed Unity, but those games didn´t bring anything new to the table. Didn´t touch the franchise for a while until Valhalla, I enjoyed that one a lot during what is essentially the Intro. When I arrived in England it all fell apart for me. The game just doesn´t have the Story or Gameplay to really support such a massive game. As for Sports games, and I include the yearly F1 games here too, I feel like those would benefit from ditching yearly releases in favour of being a content Platform. Like i.e. F1, the base Platform is free, with a Team or two and a Track included as a Demo of Sorts that you can use for Time Trial and Single Race, if you don´t own any content, you can buy the most recent Season (Cars / Teams and Tracks) at what regular full price would be and you Unlock all the game modes. From there you can then buy older Seasons at a lower price as a content pack, with Retro Cars and Tracks (like i.e. a car from the 70´s and a Track from that era) being additional purchases. If you already own at least one full Season, future ones should be available for cheaper because you really just getting the new Cars and maybe a Track or Two at that point. That way they would still have a yearly release and players would end up with a game that, at this point, would allow them to play a Career Mode over 13 Seasons with all the different cars and tracks used over these years.
This was an incredibly well articulated comment and I gotta say I agree with a lot of what you said here. I'd especially be interested in sports games like F1 doing that. Because I am a fan of the sport, but I find the yearly game releases annoying to bother with.
Halo having one rts was fine imo as it's the franchise coming full circle it just needed to be a one off story. Honestly even halo reach was unnecessary since the halo novel of the events of reach is a better telling of the events. Halo ce-3 is a good enough trilogy.
i absolutly agree, thats the reason i have liked the sonic game series, especally with the new installments of sonic fronteers and the newer game thats coming out soon sonic superstars. In order to keep people interested, you must be creative and original.
I feel like Sonic games do have an issue in actually retaining quality, but I absolutely do appreciate how often they try new stuff and experiment with their formula. Even when it doesn't work.
While i agree for the most part, i feel you misinterpreted the Halo situation a little bit. Less in a "The Halo series should continue" i definitely agree that it needed to stop Fire343 from what i saw just felt like an excuse for people to harass the developers which is what i can't support, they already deal with hell from their managers and publishers through working conditions, deadlines and crunch. After all, who wanted more Halo games to come out? Microsoft of course, its what Capital does, make more of the product that made them bank. Anyway other than that i feel thats why the indie scene tends to be better regarding this for the most part, they want to create something that came to their heads and expand upon it. Because of this Sequels tend to be more rare unless they get a lot of attention. Thank you for the video, its without a doubt an important topic that needs to be discussed. And please if i sounded a bit angry at the start that was unintentional, i just feel some fanbases really miss the nuance needed for these situations and it can get frustrating.
I can see why you might have been annoyed by that. But here's my hot take, 343 should never have existed as a studio to begin with. Microsoft creating a studio solely to deal with their Halo IP was a terrible decision. So my issue is I've never seen a good thing come out of 343, I also am pretty sure it's the fault of management and higher ups. But that doesn't change the fact I don't see a purpose for it to exist at all. The IP should've been shopped around to good development studios and Halo should have been allowed to be taken in a different direction that's actually creative. The existence and continuation of 343 has remained a constant obstacle to this. And btw, I fucking hate Microsoft and absolutely blame them for everything, but it doesn't change that 343 has never created a genuinely good thing ever.
@@literallylaw I believe they've created good aspects to their products but that doesn't exactly excuse the whole packages. Especially in their regards to features that should have been there in the first place. This has been a consistent issue since the start of their tenure. I'm sorry if my comment sounded like i was looking down on you, that wasn't my intention. Its already frustrating enough dealing with the game industries bs as a whole.
Don't take mine as some sort of clap back or anything. I like comments like yours. I like viewers that take the time to put their thoughts into words and really talk to me. It's actually one of the few things that keeps me making vids for this channel lol. Not drowning in views and money or anything, the community that's slowly building is sort of my incentive.
@@literallylaw Yeah i get it, sometimes it can just be a little hard to understand the tone of a message especially through some random post on any other social media site. You're trying to grow a community here and having discussions can really mean a lot to get new ideas and fill in the gaps that you aren't necessarily well informed on.
This was a great video, but there's an even worse issue you missed, when developers exclusively rely on a single IP for money. It's similar in practice and theory to what you said, but the difference between Ubisoft and Bethesda is that while Ubisoft fell off and are milking the AC series, at the very least they're still making "new" games. Bethesda, as well as rockstar, have literally just milked the same games (Skyrim and GTA V) for over 10 years and TWO WHOLE CONSOLE GENERATIONS while completely neglecting to create anything new. They know people are desperate for anything new when it comes to those series and instead of delivering on that and pleasing the fanbase, instead they just crap out a bunch of shitty spin off games like elder scrolls blades or all the dlc for GTA online. Both developers went from publishing new games every 2-4 years, to only releasing 1 game in the last console generation, even though they're currently richer and more famous than ever before. Granted in rockstars case it's a bit better since RDR2 is still the most technologically advanced and detailed game to date while fallout 4 is well, fallout 4, but it still sucks to see. I just figured I'd add that since it's similar to what you discussed in this video
I feel like this would actually make for a great companion video at some point. Cause I totally agree, it boggles my mind how ridiculous their infinite money printer games are at this point and how they can literally just not make anything for years upon years while they sell shit like Shark Cards, or the fifth re-release of the same game. But yeah, at least Rockstar made RDR2, which I liked way more than I do GTA as a series. But with Bethesda, it's been nothing but what feels like low effort for so long now. I don't even want to talk about F76...
Yeah, the problem is people are franchise addicts and capitalism is gonna capitalism. New ideas are risky and people will stick with the memory of what they liked before over trying something new. Nostalgia will have people buying the ‘modern’ reskin over and over again. Until the people are willing to let a good thing be a good thing on it’s own and truly judge a sequel on it’s own merits and not ‘being a fan of the franchise’ this will continue to happen.
Halo massively suffers from this. Fans with rose tinted glasses ignore the fact 343 has fucked up THREE times in a row (arguably 4 if you look at the state of the MCC for the first two years). But idiots keep giving them money. So why would they ever right the ship.
I personally love FC2, but that's because so few games actually offer me that exact setting. Plus I actually like that the game does it's best to make it's gameplay and themes work together.
As a fan since the dawn of Xbox, I really realllly want Halo to go into cryosleep for a good long time. The sad thing is, the gap between 5 and Infinite just wasn't enough for that to work out, meaning we may need a lengthy, Doom-like hibernation period for Halo to return with a truly genre-innovating masterpiece. Even MORE sadly, Micro$oft will never ever allow that to happen until somebody can prove to them that's where the money is. Edit: Mother's Basement (anime content creator) did a great video recently called "Let Goku Die" that touched on the folly of the "undying but not evergreen franchise" concept. I recommend it because it forced me to think about my own media consumption habits.
I am 100% with you on it being tragic about how Halo will likely never even be given the period it needs to. All because Microsoft and their greed will never even consider it. I'm not personally a fan, I remember some really stupid pro capitalist stances he took way back when about piracy and other crap and I can't really stand him as a result. Sorry.
@@literallylaw Exactly, that's why I eventually decided I'd pent up so much negative energy toward the franchise and 343 that I had to let go. Sad, and not expecting it to ever change, but I'll be blown away if we get a creatively reinvigorated Halo title in 15 years. Ah, didn't know that about him. That Goku vid came up in my recommended and I thought it was a decent take. Thanks for enlightening me!
Hey, form your own opinions my dude. I'm no preacher. I just remember that entire saga left a really sour taste in my mouth regarding his views on shit. Maybe he's changed. Maybe he hasn't. One thing I keep thinking about with Halo is, can you imagine if a really competent studio was just allowed to do something with the IP and world? None of the idiocy of 343 or overbearing shit from Microsoft. They own Id now. Imagine a Halo game from the doom guys. Just, there's so much that could be done in the future to resuscitate it. But right now, I've lost all faith as well.
@@literallylaw Will do. I'll look into that and draw some conclusions and not just take it at face value. True that, man. Even if I doubt it'll ever happen, I wish Halo eventually gets that caliber of talent with passion to drive it. Anyway, I'm really digging your videos and am looking forward to more thought-provoking musings from you. I selfishly hope you can improve visibility of the embattled state of creativity in the gaming sphere, because I want AAA games to be fun again lol
I'll keep doing what I do my friend. Regardless of whether it's successful or not, even if my real work makes it so I can't put them out at the same speed, these videos are my version of therapy. Me shouting into the void and hoping to hear something back. So far I've heard a lot back. Positive comments from people like you, who want me to keep shouting :)
So many games have been done now I find most multiplayer games are just re-skins.. I just look forward to a good story game now and also I’ve gone back to my ps3 to play some good ol classics.
I absolutely agree that halo stopped getting good at reach. While I love older halo games, everything past reach is ass on a platter so they can just milk their players’ wallets.
Yeah, like, there was no reason for the franchise to continue. Because clearly there wasn't a good enough idea, since 343 constantly retconned it every game. 😭
@@literallylaw Exactly, the 343 drama is a while can of worms in and of itself. But in any case, he muddied the good name of a once beloved franchise. I haven’t even bothered to waste my time ever since halo 5. They could of left it how it was. I don’t give a damn if younger generations get to experience the “most realistic” or “most engaging” new halo every fucking second. Imagine if valve made games like portal and tf2 have a new reimagined version of the same game over and over. It would lose its charm and nostalgia that makes them fun even today. That’s where valve shines bright, for the most part, their sequels are unmatched in terms of making them feel new and exciting while keeping a premise. I think you should have some sort of unscripted podcast along with your videos. Just have a basis for each episode and talk for a while. Talking about all the ups and downs of the industry with people. Of course I know there isn’t much free time, just a suggestion :)
Hah, I actually did have a podcast back when I was first starting to look for a job. I initially did it with some friends just to be able to get it on my CV.
See, what's happening is we as gamers are thinking about this whole situation backwards. They (developers) are speaking /our/ language; video games, the franchise you love so much. But they're the ones speaking first by releasing new monotonous titles. This way, it's only a one way conversation where we have no say in the matter. No. In order to get a message across, we need to speak /their/ language; money. Please for the love of god stop buying these games, even if it "might be the one to change things and breathe life into the franchise". Don't. It makes my blood boil that gamers think giving developers what they want in order to find out for themselves whether the game is worth it or not is the best choice. Just stop. Look up reviews before you buy, let its launch day fail. They've been enticing and tricking us for too long and now WE need to speak THEIR language--money--with /silence/.
I have not bought a game on launch ever in my life. I'm not rich enough to throw away money like an idiot. Most people however don't seem to be that wise or to have been taught the value of their money and how they use it in life. I also am a massive proponent for piracy, especially if it's to try a game before you buy and see if it's even worth it. Which frankly, wouldn't be such a problem if games actually got demos. But most don't.
@@literallylaw Back when I was younger, maybe say, 15 or younger, I bought games left and right as soon as I had the money. For a lot of low-quality indie games that made no sense as to why I'd want them in the first place, I nowadays have regret looking at all those titles just sitting in my library. But I'm not talking trash about indie games, quite the opposite (just those old ones were... "bleh".) I actually almost strictly play indie games because they're way cheaper and have so many interesting mechanics, stories, worlds, and vibes. An indie dev I follow releases games for like 10 bucks or less and I have over 100 hours in each of them, I love his stuff.
maybe it's not such a bad thing f-zero is dead after all. it ended on the highest note possible. f-zero GX was the pinnacle of 3D f-zero while climax absolutely perfected 2D f-zero, and that's how it's legacy should be remembered instead of forced out of the grave like the tragedy that befell paper mario
all good things must come to an end, video games are no exception and if you are trying to keep it alive it just becomes boring and a mere shell of its former self i wrote this comment literally seconds before you said it yourself, not gonna delete it tho :)
its sad to see games focus more about the money then creativity. if they just switch this formula they can actually make a good game and produce alot of money. Indie games are great at this because they aren't forced by some boss who hasn't even played a video game in his life to make a game that he wants.
Only real disagreement I have is that I think it would be ok for a game to maintain a consistent gameplay with little to no changes as long as that gameplay loop is great to begin with. If a game series is doing this though they better make the story, characters, and/or setting fresh. Sometimes I just want to keep playing the same game I really love if it can be given a meaningful continuation.
That's the thing, I think you can always improve on it. I like to use Devil May Cry as an example, it's arguably the same type of gameplay from 3 to 5. But the level of depth and detail and variations added into the mix of that same style are incredible. You can't even compare playing as Dante in 3 with Dante in 5.
@@literallylaw I don't think that you always can improve on it. Sure refinements can be made but sooner or later the refinements would tend to the best possible gameplay for that style. Once you achieved that if you still got some stories to tell I don't see any reason to break the formula.
I've realised based on both your comments that maybe we just fundamentally disagree on a lot of things. 😂 I don't have a problem with that, just keep in mind you're as likely to convince me as I am you.
So long as you don't take that fact personally, discuss away. I'm a very blunt individual at times and many people, especially through written comments get defensive and feel attacked. But obviously I don't really intend it that way.
I think the franchise Resident Evil still has some legs but it's Assassin's Creed that's been beaten into the dirt in my opinion the first three games were great then the series gradually started to implode because Ubisoft fired the lead creator of Assassin's Creed for suggesting that the series had to end at some point. Ask for Halo I believed it ended at 3 all the other games that came out after that are irrelevant unless it's ODST and reach because those were made by the same developer
I think the reason RE still has legs is because they're reinventing what RE is every few games. Every time an old style stagnated they made something slightly different. My favourite AC is Black Flag, cause I fucking love pirates and that historical era and that's still the only good modern pirate game. But post that one yeah, the series just felt pretty pointless to continue. Like watching a headless chicken walk off a cliff.
@@literallylaw this is why I'm holding out for an Assassin's Creed 1 remaster I hate how they change the control scheme from the first two games for Assassin's Creed 3 that was my last Assassin's Creed game I played I never even tried Black Flag because I thought it would be the same control scheme I hated in 3
i mostly agree with you, i do kinda wish halo just chilled out for a while. heck, i bearly play the 4th one on the mcc. and havent bothered to buy the new one, although i did like the multiplayer. but i dont think this is a "WE HAVE THE POWER" type deal, most people just want to be comfy, i do kinda hate the games that just go on forever, ive seen that with pokemon. i used to really love the pokemon games, but then they just want me to shuvel out money to keep the reason why i liked them. but i really dont like the idea thats like a choice that society makes. when really it isnt.
I do think it's a we have the power type deal. I think everything in the world is that type deal. People are the reason shit happens. They are market trends, their choices are what single handedly shapes and directs all the terrible crap that happens in any medium of entertainment.
AAA companies have the budget to make incredible things but a small indie dev can do better than them imagine if they made a game like kenshi but bigger and even better they could but they would never be able to come up with such a cool concept. Because they don’t do new things they play it 100% safe All they do is soulless games you can’t even have games that require skill these days. They don’t even see their classic games as their legacy like epic games they see it as an obsolete product they don’t even want to sell it for some reason it’s crazy all they want to be associated with is fortnite not unreal tournament they don’t even want to finish their game and abandoned it completely not even letting the community finish it for them fk the fans right ? if it doesn’t make them millions a day it’s not worth it they don’t just want to make enough money no they want all of it every single drop every microscopic little particle until there’s nothing.
Yeah, if triple A companies had vision instead of shareholders we'd live in a world with some of the greatest games of all time coming out. But indies have to play Atlas and carry this entire industry on their back now. But I wholeheartedly agree with you here. It's never been about profits, it's always been about ALL THE PROFITS. That's the heart of the problem, the greed of the assholes at the top is so out of control that nothing but the collapse of this industy will stop it.
In terms of Halo, i definitely think they need to let the story rest. If they really *need* to add story alongside multiplayer, they could do a revamped version of Spartan Ops. Something not super heavy. Other than that, Multiplayer being relatively fun is the only saving grace.
I thought i was the only one... when i was playing ac origins, the gameplay was beautiful, but the story and necessary side missions felt like filler and shallow
I think series are safe, so big publishers like it. However, they also kill all creativity and now are all stuck in a dead end. Assasins creed is killed, same with halo, MK, sports games, overwatch, mobas, CoD, farcry, GTA, Fallout, and likely more, as these spots are creatively bankrupt. Also, the people at the top don't understand games aren't a creative product, not a selling point. This leads to big studio fallout where they do the same thing because they assume people are numbers that when they win them once they can win them every time.
Video game black pill. When something becomes popular it’s doomed. This is pretty much why I quit video games and only play pretty much osu and chess. PS2 was attitude era and ps3/360 was ruthless aggression era. Gaming isn’t the same anymore and corporations kill the soul
A nuanced opinion on the internet? Absurd! I'm much more pro-franchise than you are, but my favorite franchise is the Touhou project, which is in A... uniquely good position, since it only needs to make enough money to support one guy and his family. It's well over 18 games in, over the course of a bit over 20 years, and the new games are still fresh and interesting. At least to me, I'm not sure how older fans feel, and many people think the newer characters are worse than the earlier ones.
Thanks! I do try, I prefer making mostly positive videos, but I do have a lot of shit I do want to rant about, so I try to make some of the negative stuff at least have a counter point or section where I go, LOOK HOW NICE THINGS CAN BE. I've never been into Tohou, but I've heard about it a ton from my more weeb inclined friends XD
I never understood why Nintendo gets a pass in this regard. Pokemon was dead after gen 5. They ran out of ideas hence now each gen has a gimmick for its region. Mario and Zelda have been the same game for decades. I mean the examples go on and on. I’m curious about your thoughts on Nintendo as Ubisoft/EA number three.
I have not owned or played a Nintendo console since the Wii. I'm simply not a Nintendo guy, main reason they didn't get mentioned and likely never will in my videos. However, I know more than enough about all their anti consumer bullshit to not be surprised to hear this about their games too. Also, as an additional point, I have never liked Pokemon. I didn't get it back when I was a kid, I don't get it now. The gameplay loop and dry turn based system never really engaged me at all.
Atleast cod has been enjoyable most games in the series including current ones, ea and ubi have been making bomb after bomb with shit servers and gameplay consistently
@@literallylaw What a bad pun, but I mean it. Franchises are ruining Videogames, Cinema and whole cities. I was in Rotterdam 2 months ago and it felt like a simulation; eventho theres a lot of amazing architecture, the city is filled with branches of the same companies over and over and over and this kinda applies to most cities in our western society. I always wonder who buys anything at those stores; sadly the answer is: almost everyone and this applies to the soulless videogame and cinema franchises aswell :c
Idk I want a new far cry every 2 years and I want it to be exactly far cry, with chests and other collectibles. Preferably same interface and controls. A new setting is nice too.
Valve is good because they literally do exactly what I said should be done. If they don't have an idea they will literally go twenty years without making a sequel to something. 😂 But Valve is only good because they have steam. Which makes them enough money that they literally don't even care about being a game dev anymore.
@@literallylaw valve doesn't use deceptive practices like a lot of other companies. they're always open to full refunds, their software works. and they still make games, there are a few recent titles and cs2 which literally just released last week
My point is valve is still good because of an excess of money and no actual other factors at this point. I don't cock suck a mega corp just because they're so wealthy they don't need to nickel and dime me.
No mate, you have bad taste. I'm sorry if this is somehow a contentious topic for you, but Doom Eternal is an incredible game. You're allowed to espouse your opinions, cause that's how the world works, but I'm also allowed to tell you how utterly I disagree with them.
Gamers fundamentally hold the power to controll the quality of the gaming market, and they have been failing to do so by buying the sub par garbage and the shitified versions of their favorite titles where skill based competition gets destroyed because the devs want the game with no barier to entry. They want football thateven people with no legs can play, chess which require no finctioning brain and swimming but without all the water boyancy issues... Its a steady decline for shooters since the peak of unreal tournament 2004. Stupification is everywhere
Consumers in the modern world lack any and all self controls and principles. This is exactly what capitalism is designed to lead to, so in a way things are exactly how they're meant to be.

It never amazes me how often we don't vote with our wallets and time sync
Yeah, it's honestly really disheartening how often consumers work to hurt themselves further through their own choices.
Glad you ended up enjoying this one as well :)
Yeah, my parents always complain when they see another sequel to things they grew up with as well.
The original Mass Effect trilogy, with a bit of ignoring how meh the ending to three was, would honestly imo have gone down as an absolute classic if they'd have left the IP well enough alone after.
Likewise! One of the best things about this channel has been being able to talk to like minded people like yourself :)
I'll never forget what the Legends of Grimrock devs said regarding making a sequel. They made 2 because they thought they could make enough meaningful improvements on 1, but after 2, they felt like they couldn't improve on the game more than they had, so they just ended the series. I wish this outlook was more common.
God tier devs. That's exactly the mind set I advocate for, not just with games but all media in general.
The Battlefield section was powerful. I would have assumed this video had 100x the views. Good work.

Your so on point here for every second, since the big gaming franchises has gone stagnant over the years I been getting into indie games a lot more for these very reasons you explained, heck as a huge halo fan I only play halo infinite from time to time, compared to halo 1 to 3 I played them endlessly and that tells it all right there
Glad to hear you agree.
This the reason why we get a new 3D Mario game after YEARS have passed. I mean...
1996. SM64
2001. Sunshine
2007. Galaxy
2010. Galaxy 2
2013. 3D World
2017. Odyssey
2021. Bowser's fury
Every title is different in some ways, it never gets stale and every game is endlessly replayable!
Agreed. 3D Mario games are a great example of the positive inverse.
Same with Zelda.
You have one of the coolest voices I've ever heard.
Thank you! It's always nice to hear it :)
So I'm not the only one

You guys and comments like this are the reason I keep em coming man :)
A perfect example of this is the new S.T.A.L.K.E.R installment,AFTER 13 YEARS YOU BRING ANOTHER? THE TRILOGY WAS PERFECT AND YOU DECIDE AFTER 13 YEARS TO BRING ANOTHER?
Yeah. Very much an unnecessary continuation to a franchise clearly done cause its a well known IP.
That is one of the few things I do like about Nintendo. They do tend to take chances with new spins on their IP before putting them out.
It's not even a secret, they'd been taking DOD money since CoD 4
I don’t think the problem is that the games have ‘run their course’ or ‘run out of good ideas’; I think it’s just that the industry as a whole has degraded, and games aren’t being produced to the same quality as they used to be.
I love how passionate you are keep it up, love the video
Thank you! I'll make sure to keep em coming :)
I said the same thing, dude speaking facts lol
oof you're clearly missing a shitload of experience if those are your tops, sad.

Good read! Also, 100% I would kill for Prince of Persia to have a doom like comeback. That trilogy was integral to my childhood.

This was entertaining and very true.
Hey, if I can be real AND entertain, can't ask for more than that :)
I have a rule. Don't Go past 3 unless it's really really good. And wait a month or two for reviews from close friends and other sources.
Exactly. Which is why I do appreciate the discussion. Hope to see you stick around :)
Great video. Couldn't agree more!
Glad you liked it :)
@@literallylaw Not to pressure you or anything, but I would watch the shit out of that video if you decided to make it :)
All in good time :)
But you can bet it's now in the list
"Killing Them Ubisoftly" LMAO!!!
Yeah, I was particularly happy with that one. 👀
Crytek's Far Cry is the only Far Cry I still replay.
I personally love FC2, but that's because so few games actually offer me that exact setting. Plus I actually like that the game does it's best to make it's gameplay and themes work together.
@@literallylaw The problem I have with Far Cry 2 is how far removed it is from the sci-fi horror shooter that was Far Cry 1.
Most games in general right now feel like re-skins unfortunately. There's quite a ton of SP stuff that's just as lazy.
Great as always c; 👌
Thanks! 😄
I want shorter (series) of games, with worse graphics made by people paid more to work less. And I'm not kidding.
Trust me I'd take the same. I know you're not.
maybe it's not such a bad thing f-zero is dead after all. it ended on the highest note possible. f-zero GX was the pinnacle of 3D f-zero while climax absolutely perfected 2D f-zero, and that's how it's legacy should be remembered instead of forced out of the grave like the tragedy that befell paper mario
Yeah. I don't see how a new F-Zero game would come out without being completely covered in micro transaction shit.
all good things must come to an end, video games are no exception
and if you are trying to keep it alive it just becomes boring and a mere shell of its former self
i wrote this comment literally seconds before you said it yourself, not gonna delete it tho :)
Great minds 😉
its sad to see games focus more about the money then creativity. if they just switch this formula they can actually make a good game and produce alot of money. Indie games are great at this because they aren't forced by some boss who hasn't even played a video game in his life to make a game that he wants.
Unfortunately the odds of this happening in triple A studios are low these days.
I don't have a problem with that, just keep in mind you're as likely to convince me as I am you.
@@literallylaw It is ok that we disagree but I do like the discussions.
So long as you don't take that fact personally, discuss away. I'm a very blunt individual at times and many people, especially through written comments get defensive and feel attacked.
But obviously I don't really intend it that way.
Sorry for not liking the video, the like number is 69
Feel free to like it now, it's gone past the magic number 😂
@@literallylaw this is why I'm holding out for an Assassin's Creed 1 remaster I hate how they change the control scheme from the first two games for Assassin's Creed 3 that was my last Assassin's Creed game I played I never even tried Black Flag because I thought it would be the same control scheme I hated in 3
KRAYTOSS?! It’s KRAYTOWZ!!
Oh lawd
i mostly agree with you, i do kinda wish halo just chilled out for a while. heck, i bearly play the 4th one on the mcc. and havent bothered to buy the new one, although i did like the multiplayer. but i dont think this is a "WE HAVE THE POWER" type deal, most people just want to be comfy, i do kinda hate the games that just go on forever, ive seen that with pokemon. i used to really love the pokemon games, but then they just want me to shuvel out money to keep the reason why i liked them. but i really dont like the idea thats like a choice that society makes. when really it isnt.
I do think it's a we have the power type deal. I think everything in the world is that type deal.
People are the reason shit happens. They are market trends, their choices are what single handedly shapes and directs all the terrible crap that happens in any medium of entertainment.
YOOOOOO Absolutely bussin
Bussin is the only way we serve it at this restaurant ;)
AAA companies have the budget to make incredible things but a small indie dev can do better than them imagine if they made a game like kenshi but bigger and even better they could but they would never be able to come up with such a cool concept. Because they don’t do new things they play it 100% safe
All they do is soulless games you can’t even have games that require skill these days.
Thanks great video, and i agree with all of it.
Happy to hear its still reaching like minded people :)
In terms of Halo, i definitely think they need to let the story rest.
If they really *need* to add story alongside multiplayer, they could do a revamped version of Spartan Ops. Something not super heavy. Other than that, Multiplayer being relatively fun is the only saving grace.
I don't find it fun in Infinite is my issue. The multiplayer doesn't feel fun at all. Something just feels off.
@@literallylaw that's completely fair. Everyone has a different opinion, after all.
I thought i was the only one... when i was playing ac origins, the gameplay was beautiful, but the story and necessary side missions felt like filler and shallow
AC as a series to me is one of the most beaten to death horses in franchises.
Yeah, they truly do view people as nothing more than a decimal.
Video game black pill. When something becomes popular it’s doomed. This is pretty much why I quit video games and only play pretty much osu and chess. PS2 was attitude era and ps3/360 was ruthless aggression era. Gaming isn’t the same anymore and corporations kill the soul
Nihilism bores me.

Mario and Zelda have been the same game for decades. I mean the examples go on and on. I’m curious about your thoughts on Nintendo as Ubisoft/EA number three.
