as a 13 year old autistic kid who has been interested in linguistics for months on end now: THANK YOU FOR THIS. actively taking notes so i can just cram this into my moldy noggin
I'm a student from Germany and during the middle of my bachelor's study I realized I loved linguistics. Now I'm trying to somehow integrate a linguistic approach into my major (Korean and Japanese Studies), although my university mostly just focuses on history, religion and literature studies. But since I'm still lacking a lot of the groundwork I'm now trying to bing introductory seminars to learn the basics. I'm glad there are universities like this that make these classes accessable to people like me
im 12 years old and autistic and ive found myself being very hyperfixated on linguistics and have been since i was in 3rd grade (i tried learning latin but i ended up losing my knowledge) and ive even tried constructing my own language. i found this video very helpful :) thank you. i will be checking out the book recommended!
I am very grateful to you for posting this series. I am a new teacher of ESL (formerly I taught math) and am trying to learn as much as possible about language and how it works. Thank you.
Very interesting lecture. Even though I don't study linguistics you got me hooked :) Also I will definitely watch more lectures on this topic since I need to have a break from learning Russian and Czech, and linguistics is something that I may seriously study in the future.
I wanted to see if Linguistics was something that I would want to pursue. I feel like I am getting closer to my passion. Thank you for this lecture it opened up more of my curiosity.
Magnificent and elucidated information sir, We are looking forward to completing our graduation through your linguistic videos, Sir do share other topics and fields of linguistics. Please sir you are such a best teacher and good at your subject. ❤
Stupendous job sir, I have fixed many doubts regarding these topics and I hope you will further upload linguistic studies videos to complete our bachelor's with bright colours.
every time i hear some thing of the contents of linguistics im highly interested, i want to have a basic understanding other than that im highly interested in learning and speaking languages, and everytime i watch some youtube video about differences and common features of languages they get more scientifical, hence more abstract and i could really use some basics to grasp this better, thats why im here! unfortunately i have barely any time, lets see..
I am a translation and interpreting student and my exams are starting so ı need a linguistic lesson bc our teacher literally show us nothing so thank you sir.
I understand that the language is complicated, but I am wondering why we need to study it. What is the motive(other than passion or curiosity which are my own motives) ?
Many many things. You can do so many things with the linguistics degree, but here are some examples as to what: teaching English as a second language, speech therapy, speech pathology, advertising, translation, computer programming and coding, being an accent coach for celebrities, being an editor for books, magazines etc., decoding ancient and forgotten languages, become an author, and to help you learn foreign languages much easier. Those are the only ones I can think of at the top of my head haha. But linguistics can help a lot with pretty much any career path.
Linguistics grew out of philology, subcategory of philosophy. It’s just another discipline we are so curious as humans we drill down to the most narrow of ideas and we then begin to study it. If you don’t know what philology is its the study of language and history from different cultures examining texts scriptures all that
I'm autistic. Constructing language is very difficult for me. Linguistics makes the rules explicit, so I can still follow many of the rules, and communicate far more effectively. I'm sure this isn't the only disorder where linguistics helps, SaLT always seem pretty busy. There's many other uses too, improving; translations, machine-produced language, and understanding of cultures past and present.

yo, you might take a peek on programming once in a while. Python's a good option if you're new.
this is so real. shout out to autistic teenagers obsessed with linguistics (me)
This comment makes me question even further if I have autism. Languages and cultures are my drug
Kid, my advice. Save this for later. Go talk to your classmates and devlop social skills
@@aceroy9195 Adult, my advice. Be kind to kids, there is no need for this negativity.

To hopefully dispell preconceived notions about what they are studying.
It's impordant that sennences be clear!
Duende in Spanish is not translated like that!!! Duende is more like a Gnome or a Leprechaun, so there is a translation...
Duende in Spanish have that meaning in Andalusia.
