  • The Smart Car is one of the only rear wheel, rear engine cars you'll have a problem liking but it really isn't all bad. I thought it would be fun to review this in between getting my hands on some other cars so I hope you enjoy. I'm trying to get my flow down and the more practice I get, the better.
    Any feedback is always appreciate. Enjoy!

    good video. I just purchased a 2014 for my daughter-sight unseen...drove it 800 miles to deliver it to her. It was a blast! I kept up with and passed most of the traffic....yes, bumps are aggravating, but smooth roads made me feel like I was in a bigger car. For less than $4k, I thought it was reasonable -daughter only drives 2.5k miles/yr, always in town, no one else in the car-so it made sense.

    • @Altek1
      @Altek1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm glad you liked the video. I completely agree, for a used car and especially for $4k, you can't go wrong if it meets your needs. I was shocked at how it felt like a full sized car when you're inside of it. They did a good job at not making you feel like you were in a peanut of a car.

    Regarding the ELECTRIC SMART… Now about 3 years after you made this video, I hope you realize that the ELECTRIC SMART is a much better car in pretty well all aspects. Especially the performance, it beats any other ICE-Car in City traffic. The acceleration is incredible! Of course you would buy the ELECTRIC SMART as a used car, just like you would the ICE-SMART. So the price is just as reasonable.

      That's quite the lineup you have. I wouldn't expect to see a smart car sitting next to a Porsche or Vette in a driveway. Glad you got what I was going for in my review, most people only thought I was talking negatively about it but I just didn't care for the asking price of a new Model. As for gas mileage, it's totally respectable, but I did expect it to be higher based on the size of the car. Thanks for watching!

    i live in brooklyn new york at brighton beach. it can take up to an hour to find parking after rush hour at night. yes it is that bad but NOT for a smart car. this can easily find a spot right away. and they keep building condos here to boot, thereby increasing residences but not parking spots proportionally. this is excellent for a place like this where i drive 15 mph on city streets so i don't hit someone who jumps in front of the street by mistake or just random people who don't look where they are going.

    I test drove a Smart and put down a $99 deposit before they started getting imported. I can't remember numbers but the price and financing terms were both good. The road noise and so-so ride seemed to me the result of tires that really didn't match NYC metro driving needs. My only major concern was the transmission. The computer clearly had only just started learning to use a clutch, lol. But I tentatively decided to go for it. Unfortunately, my car died before the Smart was available so I had to cancel my deposit and buy something else. I still get a bit whistful every time I see one....

  • @PhilVerryChannel
    @PhilVerryChannel 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This reviewer handles this car as if it were a BMW, he says he is not driving it aggressively but in fact the minute he takes off he's got his Throttle Down 50 to 75%. He seems to treat it like it's a racing car instead of understanding the technology and the Design Concepts behind the car and its purpose. The car was designed as an in town car so that the brake is slightly soft and Squishy because you're doing a lot of stopping and starting in cities while in traffic. You don't need speed in the city however it certainly does get up to a higher speed as required by the driver when entering a freeway or on a highway. If you would let off of the gas slightly as it shifts it will gently shift but when you push the gas down as hard as you do it has a different type of transmission and it's not meant to be racing like a BMW or a Mercedes so, quit treating it like one. Over all, he has a complaining, negative vibe for my tastes.

    • @Altek1
      @Altek1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can admit to having a heavy foot when I do, but re-watching the video, I see maybe two occasions where I was hard on the gas. I drove it no differently then I drive my 90 Legend, but I will add that the Go-Pro's wide angle does make it appear that I'm going faster than I am. I do state the reason someone should purchase it, it's a space saver for tight cities. The shifting took long regardless of how hard you hit the throttle, that's why I mentioned it. It's a semi-manual gearbox if I'm not mistaken, so the computer behind the scenes does take a long time to shift through gears. I was hardly driving this car aggressively, and I mention that I was scared to handle it aggressively. I was trying to come off as comical with any negativity, but I respect your opinion. Thanks for watching even though ya didn't like it!

Would be like me driving a racing car through the city and talking about how it's to fast and burns to much fuel. Smh. Should have taken the car for a full week to use as a common person would. Like to work and back and ran some short errands. Then gave his review.

    • @Altek1
      @Altek1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      LA is a big area, so I have to assume you're not looking for a space saver like someone would near me in NYC. If that's the case, I'd look for a Honda Civic or similar city car, it has the same and in some cases better gas mileage than the Smart Car with a more usable amount of space. You'll end up spending more, but as far as price, unless the thing has under 10k miles, I'd offer between $5,500-$6,500 considering the current market. Hope that helps!

    The one thing I thought was kind of odd about the review was that there was a recall on that foam rubber pad deforming and melting on the engine.
    Well there is supposed to be a steel cover under the foam what it looks like is completely missing!!!
    If the *steel plate* that covers the engine isn't there, you're gonna get carbon monoxide in the car and anything you put on top of the carpet is gonna mash that foam rubber down into the engine compartment because *IT'S JUST FOAM RUBBER!!!* 🤷‍♂️
    I have a 2013 Passion w/ the premium sound system/touchscreen navigation that has 42,000 miles on it I purchased for $4000 and really enjoy it so far,..... But I would have never paid over $17,000 for it when it was new.

      Some models were not an ordinary auto, they had what's called a automatic manual transmission. Essentially it's a manual where the shifting is done automatically. I'd respond to the mpg portion of your comment but I don't quite understand it.

    • @felix491
      @felix491 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @Altek1
      @Altek1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@felix491 I see where your coming from but seeing as how a diesel VW or even a really efficient hybrid Civic can get between 40-50mpg, I figured the odd shape and the name "Smart" would usher in something we haven't seen before that would justify it's odd size.

    You shouldn't do a review on a car you do not own or drive on a daily basis. I own a 2014 Pure. It's a great little car. With more room in it then you describe. It even pulls my boat and a trailer when I have large items move.

      I don't see the need to own a car to form an opinion on it. And I never said it was a bad car, just that it's too expensive for the MSRP but decent for a used purchase.

      Haha! My thoughts exactly. The only reason it makes sense is if you have to park in a small city.

    "Art." I recall some BBC documentary years ago after the gulf war 2, a British woman was trying to teach Pakistani women about "art" in the Western world. She shows a photo of Marcel Duchamp's Urinal to them.
    They had a look of stun and disbelief, thought she was joking or something, that a toilet would be considered art and placed in museum.
    I think many can share that kind of sentiment while looking at car like this and being told it's "art."

      Haha that's a fantastic way to put that. Funny thing is, the fact that they call it art makes me dislike the look even more. They should have stuck with SwatchMobile, maybe then people would have more respect for Swatch.

      Altek ah swatch. That brand name reminds me of those bright, rubbery, multi color, low priced watches with the rubber band bangle across the face to "protect" it. It was definitely 80s and a fad.
      I suppose they have a different image in the rest of the world nowadays.
      You got talent and brains to do these reviews. I hope you crank them out.
      Have you joined any auto press organizations like IMPA? You'd be able to get your hands on many more makes easily.

      Hah, that's swatch alright! Shocked they thought they could make cars, at least they were smart enough to realize they couldn't do it alone.
      Thanks bud. I'm trying to get content up as quick as possible but it's tricky with my full time IT gig and doing all of this myself with an extra pair of hands only when I can find them. It's fun being creative though, so they'll keep coming just not at the pace I want.
      I haven't heard of IMPA but I was just looking into it. Thanks for the heads up, I have a few more cars on hand to do but I'm going to run out sooner or later. Much appreciated Ninja!

    • @andrewpreston4127
      @andrewpreston4127 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Altek1 Nothing to elaborate, really. You don't really get what owning a Smart car is about. Instead, you commit most of your review to a long repeated moan about it's perceived deficiences, and looking at it through your dollar bill eyes. Sorry, you took this to be insulting. It just seems to me to be straightforwardly accurate

    • @Altek1
      @Altek1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I absolutely understand what it's about, and I state it clearly. If you need a space saver and live in a congested city, then it makes sense, but you can't say it's a "good value" at its asking price. The car didn't respond like a normal car and that's what I was trying to explain.

    The W451 is not developed for the U.S. or Canadian Market! It is not made for the bad north American Streets/ Roads. It is a City-Car.for European Standarts. The Cluch is an Electrical Manual, thats why it feels a bid odd for you americans.
    The Typical American Pickup size Cars would have a pretty hard Times to find a Parkingspot in our Citys. Old Towns like in Paris or Barcelona? Smart is the best car !
