Thank you so much for your work. I've jumped off the deep end with photography recently (COVID inspired) and your reviews are epic. I've probably seen 100s of hours of different TH-cam reviewer content at this point... you're top-notch.
actually I had a 90mm, I have sold it and ordered the sigma 105mm. Main reason was that 90mm is optimised to get round bokeh balls at f5.6, and using it for portrait at f2.8 the bokeh balls were not round. Sigma is round at 2.8, and I also preferred the 105mm for portrait. I really hope the sigma is going to be easy to focus manually as the 90mm that was amazing.
With so little between them, I think people might choose one over the other based on what lenses they already have, or what their needs are outside of macro photography. The 90mm might be preferable in a small headshot studio, while the 105mm might be picked for outdoor portraits.
Thank you for the review but i didn't understand what you explain about the Sigma is collecting more dust. Do you mean that dust is going inside the lense and behind the glass inside ?
Thanks. Very helpful comparison. I have a Sony A7ll. Looking into a macro lens. I like Sigma macro, but how important is IS? Will it perform well with my camera? Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! Going into proper macro magnifications you will have to close the aperture as DOF will be crazy shallow. This will also most likely require a tripod. If it is bright enough and you can crank up ISO/Shutter speed than the lack of IS on Sigma is not a deal breaker
Just the kind of review I was looking for. Considering the lenses for both macro and portraits, I lean towards the Sigma, I think it's more versatile because of the more pleasing bokeh and longer focal length which produce better portraits.
The Bokeh difference is all down to the focal length. However most macro photographers want the largest depth of field, otherwise you are just photographing an insects eye. If you want a portrait lens buy a portrait lens.
probably - the depth of filed is crazy shallow already. Extension tubes, even if they do work, might make using any of these lenses very difficult to use
I used a7III and a7sII - I use manual focus going that close. Sharpness wouldn't be affected by different SONY cameras but the ability to crop in post to get closer would. More resolution, bigger chance to get even closer to your subject by cropping
both would do good job. Not the best choice for video (if you are not going to use macro). The focus travel is very long from macro to infinity making it auto focus slow sometimes

that't the only way to shoot macro! I don't really do much of the side by side technical comparisons like that but after shooting with both of these lenses for awhile now I can't see that there would be any difference at f8

I think Sony could commpensate the price with the fact that is more comfortable to use and has a few very important spect on its design for macro photography better than Sigmas. This was a very very great review Pav breaf and to the point keep these comming please.
Since sony is an older lens one can often find it cheaper - I got mine for 550$ almost new & in warranty. Its going new in India for just over 700$. The sony OSS gives a little more stabilization & from some other reviews that the Sony MF works better. Personally I prefer the sigma bokeh - they seem very equally matched. I just wish they would make their lightweight earlier MF version too!
Hello im waching for these lenses now u have change your view on it sins 4 years ago or something newer u recomend today they are werry similar her in norway at second hand price.. maybe 100-150$more for the sony
2 years later and I still love the Sigma Macro, now using it on the A7RV I do notice problems with the Insect eye AF. It finds the eye/body but is focusing rapidly back and forth so when burst shooting half the images are blurry. I went back to this video to check AF performance and you said they're both similar so I'm just hoping for a Mark 2 on the Sony or Sigma that will hopefully fix this.
Just to let you know that the Sigma 105 Macro is not compatible with the Sony A7iv. The manual function flickers and makes it impossible to use the manual focus components of the Sony camera. Spend the extra $300 and buy the Sony lens.
Ita a very good comparison my friend.., i'm are sigma boy when it comes to the sharpness.., but i'm sony boy when it comes to the power of AF 😂 But the problem is Can anyone give me a suggest between the Sony and the sigma..., I have the sigma 85mm so that i don't need the function from the macro lens to take potraits.. For the body is using a7iii with IBIS in the body.., so i dont think i need that much from the OSS of the sony lens.., and i prefer the sharpest of the sigma.., but i think there are much considering the power from sony in the AF, switch easily the AF by just push or pull the focus ring, and the OSS for the video..., I know from my opinion its like more good for me to take the sigma but i'm still confused because there are no much second hand sigma lens in the market that i can buy from...😂😂 Thank you for thr videos ❤
Why samples are iso 1000? Thats why you didn't see difference in sharpness, at iso 100 sigma would be sharper lens. Also need to mention that sigma got worse AF and focus ring got long delay while sony focus ring is faster, AF speed I could forgive, but focus ring with such delay is something that was driving me crazy and sold sigma. I would go for sony 90mm all the way even if its softer.
what gave you the idea that all my samples were shot at ISO 1000?? There were all shot at different settings, depending on the situation. Many of them at ISO 100
Such a hard decision to make. Do I want to have another heavy Sigma lens without OS, but better image quality that's cheaper than the Sony. Or do I want a lighter lens with OSS, slightly worse image quality, better focus ring, but costs a lot more...
Any reason you kept the Sony over the Sigma? I’m looking for a macro lens but also want to do portraits. Based on the reviews and comparisons, the Sony with OSS is a better buy with better resell value. Any thoughts?

Very nice review, thanks a lot. At this moment the Sony lens is reduced with 300 euro, and the price is close as 30 euro to the SIgma one. I will order the Sony, since they are at the same price, but it has stabilization and that clutch for manual focus seems very nice to use.
I am thinking the same .. but.... i love the Sigma bokeh when out on location.. i want both but can only afford one... i think the Sony will win and then i will get the Samyang 135/1.8 for the outside bokeh shots..
Globally Sigma lenses are about 10-15% cheaper than the Sony ones. However, that doesn't seem to be true in India (past experience). So, I feel Sigma price is going to be very similar to Sony 90mm in India or may be even higher than Sony once lauched (Sony 90mm is priced at £580 here). If both are priced equally which one will you prefer for macro and portraits? p.s. - My camera (A6400) doesn't have stabilization.

I generally shoot in manual and move the camera back and forth to fine tune focus depth. I also NEVER shoot at F/2.8. Min is F/8 for more DOF. Everyone compares the sharpness to the Sony at F/2.8. I need to know how it compares at F/8. Maybe the Sony surpasses it? Did you do any sharpness comparisons at higher apertures? btw- keep up the great work on your videos.
that't the only way to shoot macro!
I don't really do much of the side by side technical comparisons like that but after shooting with both of these lenses for awhile now I can't see that there would be any difference at f8
@@PavSZ Ok thanks!
I like the overall lighting and atmosphere, but your focal plane for your product close up is too thin
yeah, sure
Another watchable review. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Great video, I've been doubting for a while. Sigma seems to be the best choice for me!
Good choice!
Thank you ❤ i really like the sigma , may be one day i will buy it 🙏
You should!
Awesome review! Thank you
You deserve so many more subscribers!
Oh thank you!
Loving your reviews
Thanks Peter!
Can you try with jewerly photography using photostacking like great brands does with his jewels
I have made Focus Stacking video tutorial before. Check it out: th-cam.com/video/0IbBAEE8Zbk/w-d-xo.html
who is "great brands" ? Cant find it on youtube
@@СергейИгоревич-ф5й Piaget, Cartier, choppard, Tiffany's, Van Cleef, Graff
they also often use macro tilt-shift lenses .... and focus stacking but very often it is juts a digital models of jewellery, especially rings. This way they can have sharpness exactly how they want it
@@PavSZ Yes, many times they use 3D digital design as you say but they also do macro photography sessions, the lack of videos to do this type of photostacking is impressive, the information is practically nil, how much I would like you to do it this October 26 that sigma for sale and I'm waiting for it in amazon spain or BH, greetings!
Hmm it’s a little strange to not compare magnification ratios for the two macro lenses. Is the Sigma 1:1 like the Sony?
yes, they are both true macro 1:1 lenses
I think it's time for a new comparison...the Sigma 105 vs. the new 2024 Tamron 90mm Di III VXD
maybe 😉
Cool video thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
love the overview. thanks for so many examples and to-the-point discussion. Best part was "I forgot to bring the f..cking cases" LOL
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
I don’t know about the Sigma, but I do adore the Sony! Thx for your video👍
I love them both!
Great review!
Glad you enjoyed it
You make great movies - picture, sound, light, editing and your message of course. I will be a regular spectator. Thank you and congratulations! I am prior to buying a macro lens. First of all, to be used in the film. For Sony A7SIII camera. Which lens do you recommend only for filming, especially in the macro option - Sony 90mm or Sigma 105? Still a difficult decision even after your comparison :) I would be grateful for the hint. Greetings from Poland :)
no to bylo trzeba tak odrazu 😉
Sigma gives you a tiny bit more reach but Sony has got that really nice pull/push af on/off switch and trust me, you'll need manual focus when filming with any macro lens. Have you seen my review of 90mm lens?
I own both of these lenses now and it is very hard to tell you which one I'd prefer more for macro video work - both excellent.
I think Sony could commpensate the price with the fact that is more comfortable to use and has a few very important spect on its design for macro photography better than Sigmas. This was a very very great review Pav breaf and to the point keep these comming please.
thank you so much!
For Sony fit that is expensive .. when Mine is for Canon [ EF Fit ] and it only cost me less than 400 from the Wex Camera shop in Glasgow
yeah for sure but it is an old lens not designed for mirrorless cameras and without AF on a Sony camera (unless you use an adapter)
@arjun rai I got it on quckr last year fr 40k. At that time new it was going for 52k (rs).
Where did you find it at that price?.
Hello im waching for these lenses now u have change your view on it sins 4 years ago or something newer u recomend today they are werry similar her in norway at second hand price.. maybe 100-150$more for the sony
I'm still using Sony to this day.
I've heard that new Tamron 90mm macro is amazing. I will be reviewing it early next year
But in India Sony 90mmf2.8 cost only $700
And sigma 105mm f2.8 cost $888
Then please reply a good conclusion for me
Sony has been around much longer.
I'm sure you can get Sigma cheaper second hand now
@@PavSZ thank you 😊
I think the Laowa 100mm 2.8 macro lens may be better than both of these. For “macro” but for video I’m sure these 2 lenses trumps them.
Yeah for macro it might be a better lens but also for everyday none macro photography these two are better overall
The laowa is the least sharp
Sigma 105 shows it has optical stabilization you said it doesn't, can you tell
Sigma 105mm f2.8 DG DN Macro has got no stabilisation built in
@@PavSZ Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro Lens
What about this one
2 years later and I still love the Sigma Macro, now using it on the A7RV I do notice problems with the Insect eye AF. It finds the eye/body but is focusing rapidly back and forth so when burst shooting half the images are blurry. I went back to this video to check AF performance and you said they're both similar so I'm just hoping for a Mark 2 on the Sony or Sigma that will hopefully fix this.
this is quite normal with all macro lenses. Manual focusing is the answer
Just to let you know that the Sigma 105 Macro is not compatible with the Sony A7iv. The manual function flickers and makes it impossible to use the manual focus components of the Sony camera. Spend the extra $300 and buy the Sony lens.
it sounds like there was something wrong with your lens.
I have it here and it works just right (and the same as 90mm) on Sony a7IV
Ita a very good comparison my friend.., i'm are sigma boy when it comes to the sharpness.., but i'm sony boy when it comes to the power of AF 😂
But the problem is Can anyone give me a suggest between the Sony and the sigma..., I have the sigma 85mm so that i don't need the function from the macro lens to take potraits..
For the body is using a7iii with IBIS in the body.., so i dont think i need that much from the OSS of the sony lens.., and i prefer the sharpest of the sigma.., but i think there are much considering the power from sony in the AF, switch easily the AF by just push or pull the focus ring, and the OSS for the video...,
I know from my opinion its like more good for me to take the sigma but i'm still confused because there are no much second hand sigma lens in the market that i can buy from...😂😂
Thank you for thr videos ❤
It sounds like you have already answered your own question. Go for Sigma!
Tough decision for me. I'm more of a video guy, so I think the 90 may be the way to go due to the OSS.
at macro magnifications the OSS makes no difference what so ever
Why samples are iso 1000? Thats why you didn't see difference in sharpness, at iso 100 sigma would be sharper lens. Also need to mention that sigma got worse AF and focus ring got long delay while sony focus ring is faster, AF speed I could forgive, but focus ring with such delay is something that was driving me crazy and sold sigma. I would go for sony 90mm all the way even if its softer.
what gave you the idea that all my samples were shot at ISO 1000??
There were all shot at different settings, depending on the situation. Many of them at ISO 100
@@PavSZ All samples in your link are iso 1000
Such a hard decision to make. Do I want to have another heavy Sigma lens without OS, but better image quality that's cheaper than the Sony. Or do I want a lighter lens with OSS, slightly worse image quality, better focus ring, but costs a lot more...
I had the same problem .... solved it! Got both haha
@@PavSZ haha nice, I went for the Sigma, just got in 30 minutes ago. Great lens, loud auto focus though XD
I've had both and kept the sigma in the end
I had both and I kept Sony in the end, I wish I kept both!
Any reason you kept the Sony over the Sigma? I’m looking for a macro lens but also want to do portraits. Based on the reviews and comparisons, the Sony with OSS is a better buy with better resell value. Any thoughts?
Just bought the Sony for $700.
So worth it!! Has already become one of my favorite lenses!
I have both of them. I think Sigma is marginally better but I keep using Sony all the time
Where did you get such a price for the Sony?
@ Facebook market
@@samuelsolisvideo3501 oh cheers I will keep my eye open for one there too.
Probably would go native w/ Sony
Sigma with Sony-E mount is also native
came for the comparison, stayed and subscribed for the accent
thank you very much!
Awesome review
Thanks for the compare !
I would buy a sigma 105 haha
I couldn't decide which one is better so now I have both 😕
@@PavSZ thank you so much for the review! I need a macro lens for Sony a iv, for beauty close ups & video, I take pictures of myself so I use a tripod. I need a really best lens😅 Could you help me to decide?🙏 Thank you in advance!🌹
@@olgagolz both of these lenses are amazing. Only you can decide which one is better for you
Thanks!
Welcome!
I just ordered the sigma 3 days ago
good choice!
Review aside, beautiful images man!
Thank you!
Very nice review, thanks a lot.
At this moment the Sony lens is reduced with 300 euro, and the price is close as 30 euro to the SIgma one.
I will order the Sony, since they are at the same price, but it has stabilization and that clutch for manual focus seems very nice to use.
good choice!
indeed, on amazon in eu you have 300 € off plus extra 100€ cashback ;-)
at least something is nice in 2020
I am thinking the same .. but.... i love the Sigma bokeh when out on location.. i want both but can only afford one... i think the Sony will win and then i will get the Samyang 135/1.8 for the outside bokeh shots..
OSS is a big deal. Not all Sony cameras have IBIS and for those cameras, especially at the tele end, lens stabilization is worth gold.
lens stabilisation or a tripod 😉
the big problem with sony lens is when switching between AF and MF, the focus shifts.
I can't say that I have ever noticed that with mine
спасибо! отличный обзор, выбрала Sigma
no idea what it means but it looks pretty
@@PavSZ she got Sigma 😊
And price in euros? ;)
yes! look here 😉 www.google.com
Tricky question! I do own both and I like Sigma slightly more but I keep using Sony more 😉
@@PavSZ - I bought Sony and results are good in first two days.
@@PavSZ thats no answer :))
