I had the good fortune of seeing Sun Ra perform at the Detroit Institute of Arts in the mid 80's. Definitely one of the best shows I have had the pleasure of seeing.
I remember Sun Ra's Arkestra being in residence in Detroit for an extended period (around 1980-81), We would go to downtown to their hotel during the day where the members were hanging and had interesting conversations with several of them about music and everything else. They also gave impromptu music lessons on their respective instruments. (We didnt see the very reclusive Sun Ra. You didnt talk to Sun Ra and he was basically unapproachable.). They were a tight group and all them revered Sun Ra.). Seeing them perform front row was an eye opening experience. The Arkestra would play out then play a barrage of Ellington charts-straight then in their "unique" way).
Sem dúvida que é uma Grande lição de Jazz e da Musica em geral é fenomenal disto não se vê muitas vezes.Uma das grandes contribuições para o nosso crescimento mundial Grande legado 😂😮
Sun Ra- piano; Marshall Allen- alto sax; John Gilmore- tenor sax, clarinet. Danny Ray Thompson- baritone sax.Rollo Radford- bass.My good friend Bruce Edwards- guitar.. James Jacson- bassoon.Tyrone Hill- trombone. The great Marvin Bugalu Smith- drums.Elo Omoe - 2nd alto sax.

From what I'm seeing, this is tame and more a classic set than what I saw in concern. For instance, the baritone sax player was in front me on the floor laying on his back overblowing it and sounding like a wounded bison knowing its about to be slaughtered!
@@olavlange8219 Hi Olav, I am sorry, I made a mistake. The alto player at 24:20 is Pat Patrick, you were right. I checked The Earthly recordings of Sun Ra by Campbell & Trent (2nd edition) and found there that Danny Davis didn't play in Berlin in 1986. Sorry for my mistake. Best regards.

Anyone know the complete personnel list on this gig
Being a Philly Boy, Arkestra shows were a home game. Awesome, and I'm 2 minutes in.
What a masterclass in jazz! From classic to free... awesome musicianship... skill, creativity, stage fun... what don't they have?
And if you saw them live, there was so much more to it that the video cannot capture!
the return spaceship!!
Yes it is a Masterclass.... Well said!

Way ahead of his time, a musical genius. He was before Ornette. Music with his personal philosophy. What a visionary!

East Berlin at that time. Great to finally see it in color

Live & direct. From another space of time...
Starting around 51:30 sounds like a combination of a dog that just got injured and a tea kettle going off in my kitchen. .. now that's art!
Finally, some footage of sun ra using his dx7. I’d love to find his patches or info about them.
Lovely and at it's Best. The Wall came tumblin' down.

Always great hats
Great!
I reckon the 4 dislikers all live together and enjoy kenny g and rod stewart!
