If we recall Hashirama tryingbto sway his father, keeping in mind that Senju are less ruthless than Uchiha, we know it couldn't be done. Itachi was simply tormented by his actions haunting him, and when he finally let go of being strong, he just spoke out his ultimate "what if things went differently" wish. Was so glad he finally found peace.
Itachi was hated, but his heart was filled with love. He was disassociated from his brother, but his heart was still close to him. He had to leave him, but he never stopped loving him. He had to kill people, but he always loved them. Itachi is my favorite character from Naruto.
