It has less recovery, in some cases it extends the hitbox which causes to cover more distance than a normal for example Iori backdash and some of them have a bigger hitbox for example Kyo J2C has a big hitbox that prevents punishment, for example if a Mary player does the slide you can hit Mary with the backdash J2C.
Also screen manipulation, Main Athena game is zoning, if you throw a fireball and doing the backdash you are cutting the range where your opponent can roll which can cause a hit on a fireball on a bad timed roll.
KOF noob here, why does the Athena player use that move while backdashing? Is there a benefit, or is it just for show?
