  • Vocal Coach Reacts To Brendon Urie's Best Live Vocals - Ken Tamplin
After receiving a lot of requests, I decided to do a vocal coach reacts to Brendon Urie. Let me tell you, he is a force to be reckoned with.
Brendon has described himself as a "spaz in high school," and was also bullied but he was able to channel his energy into music. He plays guitar, piano, bass guitar, drums, accordion, organ, cello, violin and trumpet .
He joined his first band in high school and worked at a smoothie cafe in order to pay his band's rent for their practice space. At the cafe, Urie often sang for customers.
Urie met Brent Wilson while taking guitar classes offered at their high school and Wilson asked Urie to try out as lead guitarist for their band Panic! at the Disco, and ended up becoming their lead singer.
Brendon is also a talented songwriter and In 2015, he wrote a song for the SpongeBob SquarePants musical.
He can act as well and starred in Cyndi Lauper's Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, Kinky Boots in 2017, in which he played one of the lead roles, Charlie Price.
More recently Urie collaborated with Taylor Swift on "ME!", which is the first single of Swift’s upcoming seventh studio album, Lover.
I’m going to be reacting to a compilation of live performances by Brendon where he showcases his range of talent.
I hope you enjoy it and let me know what you thought!

Idk if anyone commented this already but his goatish vibrato kind of stuck with him cause when he was younger he used to try to imitate gwen stefani. Even tho he claims he got rid of it u can still kind of hear it sometimes. Great video btw!

Wow Ken...Ive never understood what attacking or coming into a note from "above" properly meant until now. And this was summary. Thank you! its about placing the note. coming in from behind and dropping in on it. Thats how certain singer have such an attack and grip on the song. Thanks for sharing that piece of wisdom!

I used to think I sang pretty okay for someone who never had voice lessons or anything, and then my own family tells me that I will probably never sing like those people on the tv shows. It brings me down, and it hurts, because I love singing and I want to be able to sing like those people. I want to have an amazing voice. I just don’t know what I am doing wrong.

Geez, Ken, wiped out by lava!! On one hand, that is extremely cool and unique. But on the other, having to rebuild your life is very difficult. (Hope you had insurance to help you out.)
I am primarily affected by the rhythm and the lyricism (not the lyrics) of the artist and the song. I like a lot of genres - 60's - 70's onward rock, "easy listening", Motown, soul, R&B, disco, 80's, and some CW (Patsy, Hank, Charley Pride).
I have heard Brandon perform before. I would put Brandon's songs here in the genre of "words and notes wandering around" and that is a genre that I have never enjoyed from childhood on - too amorphous. He is, no doubt at all, a musical genius with his ability to play just about any instrument. His voice and delivery would benefit from your coaching.
Would he win any of the current singing competitions? I think he would be selected by the judges for each show because his voice has the "sameness quality" that is in vogue now. But, I don't think he would be able to demonstrate everything he does instrument-wise on those shows. Since children are winning these contests now, he would not win. But he has a career now so, I guess he doesn't have to.

And now I've got "Sing For The Moment" by Eminem in my head. Was rapping it out while you guys sang Aerosmith. For me, those is no better way to gain quick access to a good, more head than chest mixed voice than sing Eminem.
I think Singing talent shows have different requirements that to be a pro singer. For talent shows, first they expect your sound to be original to you. If one mimics, they'll likely be stopped and asked to sing something else. Also, you often hear songs on the radio that wouldn't pass a singing talent show, because they expect people to exert maximal vocal capacity. I know there were times when I watched the voice where the judges admit they thought the singing was good, but they were waiting for that insane note to turn around, and the note was never hit.. Maybe if he auditioned for a show that Simon judges, with the intent of singing Ave Maria or something.

I think Brendon is definitely one of the biggest reasons why the vocalists in the punk scene these days push themselves. Stereotypically you have the image of a Punk singer who just yells into the microphone and that's how it might have been back in the days but now you have these incredible young singers who can do ballads, they can belt, they can use distortion, they're usually on key and can probably play at least 2 instruments and most of them would say that they look up to Brendon.
By the way it would be totally awesome to get a video on modern punk vocals, there is so little material out there for that style and it has so much potential.

He said that he never went for vocal training. That doesn't mean he didn't train and practice to get where he is at right now, that kind of singing doesn't come naturally. There are a lot of popular singers with good voices who don't use proper technique, Brendon isn't one of them.

I really appreciate his rich tone. I think the way he enunciates his words so fully like that allows for that rich timbre to come through. And I’m not a theater person whatsoever. I think it’s the low larynx with the contemporary twist I love so much. I like the way he approaches higher notes in his chest and mix as opposed to say a Steve Tyler where it thins out and to me loses emotional value. That rocker screaming tone is not my favorite.

I love Brendon Urie’s voice. Whether he is singing originals by him or covering others, his chameleon vocal ability never stops pleasing. My favorite vocal color for him has to be his jazz style, when he channels his Frank Sinatra voice. ‘Death of a Bachelor’ is a prime example of that color to his voice. He does it at 12:30.

Ken I can agree with you. This is not to say you agree with me but My opinion is THE VOICE or X FACTOR are usless shows and can inhibit developing as an artist. They are for entertainment purposes only. The judges are another odd abnormality. Most are famous people that are over paid to put on a mini show themselves. Really I try and not watch or support this platform. If you love music go out into your town and watch people live give them some support. Not this souped up money maker for the advertisers.

I work at a Club in Sacramento Ca. Luna's Cafe in midtown.
I take the door money, set-up a basic sound mix and help with lights. Once the show goes I plug in my earphones and listen to Ken Tamplin. One guy walks in I collect the door fee and he sees that I am watching/listening to one of Ken's podcasts on vocal reaction to Skid Row, I think. The guys asks if I am watching Ken Tamplin I said Yes. He said "I love Ken and watch him all the time!" I ask if he is a vocalist..and he goes "not really, I just like him and what he has to say." I was kinda shocked that a non-vocalist would follow Ken. Which confirms my earlier statement that Ken is good to watch and if you feel down that day or week...just watching Ken will make your day better...So that was confirmed to me that nite. Hopefully I will get to meet him one day just to talk about music and/or vocals.
      Yes...✌

(Someone correct me if im wrong,) I believe in the girls/girls/boys live clip, he was going through some Acid Reflux, which is why he doesn't quite sound right.
Also, when you pointed out his sinatra vibe in Death of a Bachelor, he actually has said many times he takes a lot of inspiration from him! :)
If you look at his live cover of Bohemian Rhapsody that would be amazing!
Also, Andy Biersack.. Or Black.. (I can't keep up with how many friggin last names he's had, sorry,) has a rather different voice. If you could react to that too, that be amazing!
Love your content, by the way!

Hello Ken, I really like your reaction videos. Will it be possible for you to make one about Luther Vandross, specially any of his versions of "A House is Not a Home". Recently, in the video you posted about Elton John and George Michael's version of "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" you pointed out how Elton was trying to showcase his voice, more than enjoying the moment like George Michael did in the first part of the song. I feel Vandross did that often, but he had an amazing vocal talent. I hope you take my suggestion into account. Sincerely, Darian Hernandez.
