easy solution with lots of potential for money making: lego can sell a service to print selected box sizes with patterns from their catalog. since noone that keeps the box resells it with lego profiting, this would generate a whole new market and could make lego lots of money.
I remember as a kid I kept most of my Ninjago boxs. Eventually though I got to many and was running out of space. Kinda wished I kept them. Late 2000s early 2010s Lego was peak
Love the new box design!! I must have 2 dozen boxes saved even after I threw away the more common ones. I have one original Lego Star Wars set from 1999 the Vulture Droid and the box is MINT so I probably won't open it. It is a tempting feeling tho and if I get another set from that era I'm definitely opening one
If you plan to resell the set keep it boxed, otherwise, I’ve never understood keeping it in box and keeping it on display, it just seems like a waste of money when you could just keep the box. In the last year I finally tossed all my boxes cause they kept too much space and it finally clicked in my head that holding onto them is pointless when I care about the actual sets so much more
I keep the box with the instructions/bags/extra parts inside. I’d have to figure out where to keep those other items, but a compact box seems like a fantastic space-saving idea!
Older boxes were definitely better for display, but the new ones are better if you actually open them, but want to keep the box and manual jic you end up wanting to sell it or give it away later down the line. The older boxes had more room for the designs, and they had other sets on the back which I liked looking at while my dad built the set when I was little.
If you're opening them, just break the boxes down flat. As long as you haven't ripped the cardboard at all, the value doesn't change if the old boxes are flattened or not.
When it's something you can actually see while it's in it's packaging I can understand the while collecting and keeping it mint. Lego is an exception for me. You can only truly enjoy it once it's built. Otherwise it's just a bunch of plastic peices sitting in a cardboard box. I'd rather display the model than a box. Now yes I do keep my boxes but they just take up space in my closet.
If you don’t plan on reselling it for a higher price as it becomes more vintage, then there’s no point to keeping anything in a box. Plus if you open the box carefully enough, you can preserve the box for displaying. It’s even doable with blister packs that toys come in, like Transformers. I would know, I’ve done it
Considering that lego has become more valuable over time i think it is probably a good thing that they are helping their boces be easier to store. I did not keep the boxes from when i was a kid, nor did i think about potential values. I even have the limited production 1 of 5k C3-P0 minifigs that was put in random sets from 2007. (Mine came in darth muals ship but darth mual was unfortunately stolen, so value there is tanked)
I really like the tantive 4 set that's pretty recent the box perfectly holds the built set inside. And as someone with alot of room that's nice for storage.
Step 1, build it. 2, keep the box. 3, keep the manual inside, 4 display.

Not relatable at all, if you don't open the set whats even the point of the toy? Toys are meant to be played with and enjoyed.
Collectibility. It’s worth more to collectors unopened than open
Worth is relativ. You need to find first someone who is willing to pay. It's not you, who decides the worth/price), it's the buyer.

In the last year I finally tossed all my boxes cause they kept too much space and it finally clicked in my head that holding onto them is pointless when I care about the actual sets so much more
People who keep boxes have serious problems
I keep the box with the instructions/bags/extra parts inside. I’d have to figure out where to keep those other items, but a compact box seems like a fantastic space-saving idea!
Older boxes were definitely better for display, but the new ones are better if you actually open them, but want to keep the box and manual jic you end up wanting to sell it or give it away later down the line. The older boxes had more room for the designs, and they had other sets on the back which I liked looking at while my dad built the set when I was little.
God the ARC-170 is one of my favorite sets of all time! So glad I got one years ago before massive price jumps
If you're opening them, just break the boxes down flat. As long as you haven't ripped the cardboard at all, the value doesn't change if the old boxes are flattened or not.
If you planing to keep it then open it but if you try to sell it for profit - don’t open it
Problem solved
That seems like it would go in a picture frame better and it would be kind of cool to have them displayed side-by-side on the wall
I feel like I prefer the way the old boxes open, but this way is definitely better for storing and displaying boxes
Now yes I do keep my boxes but they just take up space in my closet.
lego should never be collected in-box
If you don’t plan on reselling it for a higher price as it becomes more vintage, then there’s no point to keeping anything in a box. Plus if you open the box carefully enough, you can preserve the box for displaying. It’s even doable with blister packs that toys come in, like Transformers. I would know, I’ve done it
80s/90s boxes had no problem folding down for storage; they used tape and no glue.
I have either kept a set in the box until I sold it or opened it and kept it long enough to sell for retail again. They are worth enjoying
I remember getting the collector set for Christmas back in the day. Great childhood memory
I really like the tantive 4 set that's pretty recent the box perfectly holds the built set inside. And as someone with alot of room that's nice for storage.
Only keep them in the box if the box is clear, like old ass action figures or sumn cause with clear casing you can still see the details
I carefully break the boxes down to save space.
