Dear Great Scott. I like your explanation but... I have a desing question that up to now I have not been able to solve. I want to dim a low power LED (in this case a bicycle rear-light LED). The dimmed state would be the normal operation state. When I apply the brakes I want the LED to become brighter (i.e. brake-light). That should be by the use of a momentary switch. I do not like the solutions with resitsors and diodes. Ik was hoping you or someone like you would have designed such a solution around a 555 chip for insance. Maybe there are already better IC's for this I do not know. Could you device such a schematic ? I would be very interested. Thanks in advance for your efforts and educational youtube postings which I am enjoying very much.
You could just hook a push button on the place you rest your hand when you brake, so that when you pull, the button is pressed. I suppose you already know how to dim a normal led so just put it in 50% duty cycle and then, through digital read of the button state, set it to 100 when you brake. That should do it, assuming of course that you have not solved this yet, in which case I hope you will be able to make it work
Hey Scott can you make a PWM video where you explain, how PWM can be used to convert digital signals to analog without an DA converter? Always wanted to undestand that. It's somehow that you change the pulse with in a way that it creates a near sinus analog wave.
Im having some weird issues with this 555 circtuit... the electronics store that i bought my components from didnt have the BUZ11 mosfet, but they found one that was comparable: IRF540N, so ive installed it. Im using this circuit to dim 10 lasers that are hooked up in parallel. The input voltage of the circuit is 5.0v from a computer power supply. So here is where it gets weird... with a single laser installed, the dimmer works flawlessly. I add a second, and the output voltage jumps up to around 8 volts, and the when i adjust the potentiometer, the lasers dim at different rates. One dims out before the other starts to dim. I now have 6 out of the 10 lasers hooked up, and the output voltage is now at 19.56 volts. One of the lasers is running very dim, while the other five lasers are full power. The five lasers are dimming near the same rate, but the one that is already dim turns off completely. I have no idea why the output voltage keeps increasing with every laser i add... Is it just a simple case of using the wrong mosfet? Or is this circuit simply not going to work for what i need? Thank you to anyone who offers any helpful advice!

Would you be able to use a 12 or 24 volt battery with the pwm method. Small pwm units are available ready made on ebay. One of these units, a 12 volt lead acid battery and a ten or twenty watt cob led and no other kit? The pwm units are for small motors but one guy uses them for leds. He did not say what his power source was.
Please let me know following, can we control 2v LED with 12V PWM, if yes what should be the width of the 12V pulse and width of the 0V pulse (with out using resistance in series with LED), if we keep the 12V width really small then the led will never burn out because high voltage and current ( product is temperature ), and then the 0v width will allow the the LED to cool down before the next 12v pulse.
But what if I want to dim a large 14-36v led above an arduinos v limit. What if I want an led to dim on and off with a single toggle button? Button-arduino pwm-buck converter(wouldn’t work)-light? Just put a big capacitor in line(unsafe).

I wonder why people say using pwm to dim ledlights lead to visible flickering when the frequency is easily above 600 hertz which i think should be enough to fool the eye
Im trying to wire a brake light/marker light on to my car. Im going to cut into the tail light wires and bring two positive wires to the new light. One being tail marker, and the other one brake light. So the light i bought only has a brake light on a single wire. I was wondering if i could wire in a resistor to the tail light wire to make it come on with tail lights dim and full power on brake light. Can you help me identify what parts i need to complete this project? And so i dont backfeed power because the two wires will have to connect to the single wire. And tail light will always be on unlike the brake light. Thank you for your time!

If you can dim the led in the arduino by lowering the voltage (0 - 255) why use PWM anyway? Does it put a strain on the board? I'm trying to understand.

At putput, you get on and off state proportionally long or short depending of potentiometer parameters. Hope this helps.

I have found some 50w resistor wires on ebay and I want to know if i use those will it make the lights dimmer so its not as bright? or will it require much more complicated wirings? the 2 lights is 30w and the resistor wires are 50w 6 ohm. I want to build a driver to incorporate in to the frame of gbe poster... the one that came with the leds it's really big. I just need to be able to switch between the comors and adjust the intensiti. I've already looked around I don't find notheing smaller than a Arduino mega. could you pleade help me?
why my transformer starts to make noise and after 5 minutes my potentiometer would not work anymore. i have a 12.5A 12V stripled (10M) and i use IRLZ44N mosfet. does somebody knows something?

Exactly what I've been looking for
Im having some weird issues with this 555 circtuit... the electronics store that i bought my components from didnt have the BUZ11 mosfet, but they found one that was comparable: IRF540N, so ive installed it.
Im using this circuit to dim 10 lasers that are hooked up in parallel.
The input voltage of the circuit is 5.0v from a computer power supply.
So here is where it gets weird... with a single laser installed, the dimmer works flawlessly. I add a second, and the output voltage jumps up to around 8 volts, and the when i adjust the potentiometer, the lasers dim at different rates. One dims out before the other starts to dim.
I now have 6 out of the 10 lasers hooked up, and the output voltage is now at 19.56 volts. One of the lasers is running very dim, while the other five lasers are full power. The five lasers are dimming near the same rate, but the one that is already dim turns off completely.
I have no idea why the output voltage keeps increasing with every laser i add...
Is it just a simple case of using the wrong mosfet? Or is this circuit simply not going to work for what i need?

Normally you would set the voltage on the bench power supply to a safe value and then adjust the current.
2:16 seems like 100% duty cycle. That is like 5V DC right? then how that LED survived at that moment?

Why even use the PWM if you attached a mosfet? All that voltage and is still going trough a variable resistance and thus wasting power isn't it?

Plastic film caps, cheap and easy to get, non polarized, they come in very small capacitance values
So you can't dimm a led strip without using the arduino? Simply because a strip requires to much amps?

An LC low pass filter will work best.
