I always think it’s strange how Rome was started by Romulus and ended with Romulus and Constantinople was founded as the eastern Roman Capitol by Constantine and ended with Constantine. Quite poetic.

Constantine XI Palaiologos the last emperor, Stripped himself of his armor. Rallying his men into one final charge as the ottomans surged over the breach, dying with great honor.
"God forbid that I should live as an Emperor without an Empire. As my city falls, I will fall with it. Whosoever wishes to escape, let him save himself if he can, and whoever is ready to face death, let him follow me".... "as to surrendering the city to you, it is not for me to decide or for anyone else of its citizens; for all of us have reached the mutual decision to die of our own free will, without any regard for our lives"

@@bannerman9062 at that time Selztouks have created an empire big as Persia's before its fall. And besides that Seltzouks were trying to have big families so they can have many soldiers, it was their way of life. There is no propaganda in it if you consider their citizens to be more than a million. And trust me for that time period a nation that had a million citizens wasnt that uncommon for the asian countries. Besides you can search it yourself, many archeologicals and history experts say that the forces of Turks against the Byzantines were more than 20 times of the Byzantine troops.

They almost concuered Vienna it self, they concuered all Valkanian countries (katholics in religion most of them) and the reason that they failed to concuer the rest europe was because the european kings united against the turks. It was actually pretty epic, imagine a dousin of kings that believe in the same God but hate each other. Now imagine them to march against a common enemy...Sorry if you didnt knew anything about all these and i hope to find these informations pretty useful. (Oh btw, katholics never tried to save the rest Valkanian countries, they just prevented the turks from moving forward to them.)

@@bannerman9062 first of all i should have known that your researches are based on Google... Secondly all european countries were orthodox until 1100 if i recall correct, maybe even earlier, and then they became catholics and turned their backs at their fellow Christians. Now about the alliance between Turks and any European country was only made to prevent the war, if you read about what happened after the fall of Constantinople you will see that Turks actually attacked Malta, all Balkan countries, Vienna (twice), Polish kings and French kings. At last yes i am sorry for my mistake, it is Seljuks but they weren't any different than Turks it is just how they called themselves at that time and how they were known (that doesn't mean that all Turks were Seljuks). Now about that Google search u did...you should that Google isn't that good source of information. You should learn historical events by documenters or books that are accurate. Its pretty easily to get wrong information by an unreliable source. Anyways, its is NOT a propaganda, Byzantines were outnumbered by the Turks 20 to 1, their gold was all spent and stolen and their men were tired of other wars with other nations, help wasn't gaven by anyone and especially NOT by the "honorable and great knights of Europe" (crusaders).

This is what kept the Greeks alive. Centuries later during our war of independence from the ottomans the leader of the army said to the English consulate who was trying to strike a peace deal for the ottomans: "My king (palaiologos) never surrendered, and was in perpetual war with the turks. Why would i surrender or make peace as a Greek?"

We must agree that Byzantine Empire, even if it was often weaker than its neighbors but Byzantine Empire was the most persistent defending and holding its territory which was attacked from everywhere, by every random nations for more than 1 millennium. The Arabs decisively defeated both the Byzantines and Sassanid Persians but as you can see, the Persians fell even before 8th century, while Byzantine, who was also heavily damaged and lost almost all territories but it continued fighting and even trying to restore their glory for the next 8 centuries. With a smaller territory, Byzantine Empire still became the most important economical and cultural power of Europe and it didn't take parts in the European Dark Age. Constantinople itself had been the only and last Byzantine territory for their last 70 years, and yet still they continued defending their last single city - empire and won 3 times against the rising and surrounding Ottoman Empire before it heroically fell in 1453.

"From this fall, the entire occident shaked. Fearfully, the news were heard in Rome, Genua, in Venice, like a warning thunder they rolled over France, over to Germany, and shudderingly Europe realizes, that thanks to it's dull carelessness through the disastrous, forgotten door, the Kerkaporta, a fatefully ravaging force has broken in, that would limit it's forces for hundrets of years to come. But in human history, just like in life, regret does not bring a lost moment back, and a thousand years will not buy back, what a single hour lost."

Latin empire? The last real Latins died with the fall of the Western Roman Empire. Italians, French, Spaniards,... Call themselves Latins, but they aren't really... That's a complete joke. The Eastern Romans, aka Byzantines were probably more Roman and kept the Greek &Latin legacy for centuries, the west broke it down, then with the help of the Eastern Romans, after the fall of the Byzantine empire in 1453, the West "or so called Latins" learned from the real Latins, and lightened the Renaissance

In a lot of ways the fall of Constantinople was symbolic. At the time, the Ottomans represented the new modern world where empires would be run by bureaucracies rather than nobility and that gunpowder would change how defenses would be built and how armies fought. Byzantium represented the old world of the middle ages relying on old systems of government and archaic forms of warfare. With the fall of Constantinople it signaled the end of the middle ages and the impending rise of the Modern Age and the Age of Discovery with Spain discovering the new world just under 40 years later

The union between Castile and Aragon wasn't made yet, 2. the kingdoms that would become Spain had bigger concerns in finishing the Reconquista against the Moors in Grenada, and 3. the Spanish kingdoms had no clue what was beyond the Atlantic ocean. When Christopher Columbus pitched his idea of sailing west it was to reach the rich and exotic ports of China and India. The Americas just happened to be in the way. The only reason Isabelle and Ferdinand of the combined kingdom of Castile-Aragon funded his voyage was a show of strength and prestige for them and the hopes that a new route to east Asia would provide more wealth to Spain to fund further Crusades into North Africa

The Ottoman Empire granted the Orthodox Greeks full freedom to keep practicing their corrupt religion of trinity. The Ottomans also allowed other Orthodox denominations, such as the Armenians, to practice, whereas they were not allowed in the city prior to that time. The Orthodox Greeks said they preferred the turbans of the Turks to the birettas of Catholics because of the unusual tolerance offered to them at the time compared with the West.

Guys, I don't see any logical comments here from any of you. Take a deep breath and think about it. When we come to this world, we don't pick our own (language, religion, culture, ethnicity, color or even our own names) correct?
So what's all these none sense fights and arguments over the things that are not even our choices to begin with?
I am a socialist Turk and I love my people, my country and at the same time, I don't hate anyone for their backgrounds, religions, colors or where they came from. We are all mortal human beings. We born the same way and eventually we all die. Therefore my advice to all of you; instead of looking back to the history and fight over the stupid shits that took places over centuries ago by our ancestors, open up a new page, start fresh, share and learn things from each other. Because life is short and it's not worth to fight each other.

@cunteater69 This is not even the point: it seems strange to me to be proud of conquests in the 21st century, which is what Turkey (which I love very much!) Is constantly engaged in officially, alas. War is bad, there is absolutely nothing to be proud of, the Turks attacked the Eastern Roman Empire (which, however, was already dying) and conquered it, finally destroying the great civilization. It was natural for that time to rejoice and remodel churches into mosques. In our time, when people have enough information about how much grief and horror any war brings, rejoicing over victory in a war of conquest is savagery. How would you react to the fact that the Korodovy Mosque was converted back into a Christian Cathedral, declaring, like Erdogan, that we defeated the Arabs in the war and have the right to do so? It’s impossible to imagine. In Spain, for which the war was a liberation one, they officially and very loudly regret the expulsion of Muslims and Jews from Spain. And they certainly don’t remake museums back into temples.

@Artere Laksamana Wrong. The Greeks, after taking the city back(without a fight), sold most of the western Christians in the city to Muslim Slave Traders, including women and children. The First Crusade was launched to help the eastern Christians, but after everyone started to march to the holy land, coward byzantine emperor backed off and let the western Christians do the job themselves. The Fourth Crusade was condemned by the Pope even before they reached Constantinople. Read the history and stop larping to the heretic, schismatic Orthodox Church.

The Byzantines are a purple phoenix, they were invaded up to 6 times, but still manages to hang on and recover, perhaps not as successful of their forefathers (Old Roman Empire), but they are considered the most "Underdogs" or "Survivors" of Empires in history.

Some Turks here must know that a number of very economically powerfull Greek Elite influenced heavily the political and military life of the newly established ottoman empire. Some examples follow (including Mehmet II himself):
    1) After the Fall of Constantinople, Mehmet II claimed the title of "Caesar" of Rome (Kayser-i Rûm). However this claim was not recognized by the Patriarch of Constantinople, or Christian Europe. Mehmet's claim rested with the concept that Constantinople was the seat of the Roman Empire, after the transfer of its capital to Constantinople in 330 AD and the fall of the Western Roman Empire. Mehmet II also had a blood lineage to the Byzantine Imperial family; his predecessor, Sultan Orhan had married a Byzantine princess, and Mehmed claimed descent from John Tzelepes Komnenos. This makes Mehmet II part Greek in his blood line.
    2) Famous Ottomans of Greek Descent or pure Greek origin that influnced the ottoman empire:
Atik Sinan, architect for Mehmed II and Mustafa III
İbrahim Ethem Pasha, Greek-born Grand Vizier
Khair ad Din (1475-1546), Greek-born Ottoman Turkish Admiral, also known as Barbarossa; (Greek mother)
Pargalı İbrahim Pasha, Suleyman the Magnificent's first appointed Grand Vizier, who left an important landmark on his reign.
Alexandra Mavrokordatou (1605-1683), salonist and intellectual.
Mimar Sinan, architect for Suleyman the Magnificent
    Kosem SULTAN
    İshak Pasha Grand Vizier
    Turgut Reis Ottoman Admiral

If the third crusade had the same goal as the first crusade with a competent Byzantine emperor just as in the first crusade, I see then that the Byzantine Empire survives longer than 1453. Imagine if Isaac II Angelos had exploited the occasion when Frederick Barbarossa defeated the Turks in the Battle of Iconium 1190. From that moment there was a chance to avenge the defeat in Myriokephalon 1176 by taking Konya / Iconium. This would mean that the Byzantine empire could have been a strong opposition to the Turks for centuries unless the fourth crusade had attacked Constantinople 1204. Unfortunately, all empires collapse from the inside sooner or later.

just to make it clear ... this is from an eyewitness...
"Nothing will ever equal the horror of this harrowing and terrible spectacle. People frightened by the shouting ran out of their houses and were cut down by the sword before they knew what was happening. And some were massacred in their houses where they tried to hide, and some in churches where they sought refuge.
The enraged Turkish soldiers . . . gave no quarter. When they had massacred and there was no longer any resistance, they were intent on pillage and roamed through the town stealing, disrobing, pillaging, killing, raping, taking captive men, women, children, old men, young men, monks, priests, people of all sorts and conditions . . . There were virgins who awoke from troubled sleep to find those brigands standing over them with bloody hands and faces full of abject fury. This medley of all nations, these frantic brutes stormed into their houses, dragged them, tore them, forced them, dishonored them, raped them at the cross-roads and made them submit to the most terrible outrages. It is even said that at the mere sight of them many girls were so stupefied that they almost gave up the ghost.
Old men of venerable appearance were dragged by their white hair and piteously beaten. Priests were led into captivity in batches, as well as reverend virgins, hermits and recluses who were dedicated to God alone and lived only for Him to whom they sacrificed themselves, who were dragged from their cells and others from the churches in which they had sought refuge, in spite of their weeping and sobs and their emaciated cheeks, to be made objects of scorn before being struck down. Tender children were brutally snatched from their mothers' breasts and girls were pitilessly given up to strange and horrible unions, and a thousand other terrible things happened. . ."

Remember, Europeans try to find an alternative route to access the spices in Asia since the Turks controlled the land route to Asia. Without this chain of events, I don't think the world is technologically advance just like today; no globalization or the internet which bring us humans (no matter the race, color, religion, etc) as one.

Ottoman turks: 110.000 land forces , 1500 serbian cavalry 76 cannons and 126 ships
They point is not to celebrate the win of the turks, but the heroic last stand of the greeks which remained though the ages and it is still celebrated today, dont be mad be polite and imagine being where those outnumbered byzantines where and fight against an foe which had no mercy

Guys stop fighting over this city!
İstanbul or Constantinople , whatever you call it, belongs to all of us!
Why should we fight after living hundreds of years together?
If you want Byzantine soul to never die in İstanbul , i assure you it still lives you can be sure of it .
You can see it in everywhere , living in the harmony with Ottoman touch.
I see Greeks as my brothers and i refuse to fight with you for this.

im greek and i also dont see turks as enemies , but your leaders and your governments through the years have done to us a lot of bad things... 400 years of slavery , 1922 the great disaster of greek sitizens in mikra asia , all these bad actions cant be just erased. now as you stated greek and turkish people can live in peace like brothers but ur leaders dont want that , see erdogan for example. Now constantinopole or instabul , is greek under turkish hands , as a lot of towns in all over the world are under control of other nations than theirs.so i believe that at least turkish people should give us back our temple , its the very least they can do , but no they chose to defile it and corrupt it

Istanbul might not be the capital of Turkey but for every other standarts it is the most important city.
For Tourism , for Economy , for industry , for culture.
It is not possible for it to be given to another country.
      Be reasonable please.
And eventough many greek buildings are left , 15 million people living in Istanbul are Turks.
      Its not that "greek" anymore.

I mean come on we dont even have memories as greeks in instabul\constantinopole. Nationalists greeks want instabul, nationalist tuskish want greek islands. BE SERIOUS PEOPLE, we live in 2015 lets live in peace! And lets face it cnstantinopole was created by romans not greeks. It became greek when the byzantine empire became hellenistic and was ruled by greek dynasties. And btw beilive me in greece we dont talk about how we miss instabul. The Byzantines defeated the Turks after the defeat in the Battle of Myriokephalon 1176, namely in Battle of Hyelion and Leimocheir in 1177. Also in the battle of The Battle of Philomelion in the year 1117 the Byzantines nailed an important victory against the Turks under Alexios I Komnenos. What fascinates me with the Eastern Roman empire in how they always managed to recover from a major defeat in their history. The "Byzantines" saw themselves as Rome's heirs and therefore were a unique culture in itself. The Ottomans came with an already existing culture, namely Islam, and erased a unique culture with an already existing culture from Arabia and the Levant.

Turks came from Central Asia, not Arabia. Fatih Sultan Mehmet (the commander who conquered Constantine) was an intellectual who spoke 7 languages. He did not destroy anything in Byzantium. He kept his books. After the conquest, the people were not harmed. He did not interfere with the religion of the people. He did not ban the language spoken by the people. They became the people of the rich Ottoman Empire instead of the poor Byzantium. We Turks saw different cultures and civilizations as the wealth of humanity. Remember, every different race, every different language in the world is the wealth of humanity. We all have the same brain, and we see that this brain produces hundreds of languages. You said 'stone' when I said 'taş' to the object on the ground. Nothing happened to the culture of Byzantium, their historical heritage was not touched, do not worry. That's why it still exists.

and the HRE (holy Roman empire) wasn't even capable of controlling their own territory.
while the English and French were fighting between themselves.
and the Spanish were fighting a struggle to empose absolute monarchies over their nations.
the only reinforcements were from Venice and Genoa and they only helped them because if the ottomans were to control the city that will destroy their trading power in the mideteranian.

Turks conquered Istanbul in 1453, that is, 39 years before the discovery of America. So I deduce that all those who commented "Greeks are the real owners of Istanbul and hence they should have it back" will also advocate for giving America back to its "real owners": Native Americans. I'm sure the majority of the Greeks don't think that way but for the ones that do I would like to say: Anaximander, Plato and all the other great Greek thinkers must be spinning in their graves over your medieval mindset. We should work together and help prevent any wars from breaking out rather than reciprocally plant the seeds of animosity. After all, "Unless a nation’s life faces peril, war is murder" (Atatürk).

jjgreek1 Hagia Sophia was used as a mosque for around 5 centuries until 1935, when Atatürk secularised it and converted it into a museum due to its cultural value and historical importance. I also agree that it should stay as a museum but cannot talk on behalf of the uneducated hillbilly Erdogan and his fundamentalist buddies.
