After seeing screen shots of the health and inventory I instantly thought "Oh it really is just Hollow Knight" it does feel too similar to that game and I've PLAYED Hollow Knight. Thank you for this review, I thought this video was gonna be bad, but you actually made some really good points, I still have real good memorizes of the entirety of Hollow Knight since it was such a memorable experience, but I don't want to play this game and keep thinking "Hollow Knight but not as good" the whole game. Plus the Sword swing looks sluggish compared to the more fluid one in Hollow Knight. Meanwhile those other games you mention feel nothing like it since they really have their own Identities. Thank you for this video, I wasn't gonna buy the game anyway cause I don't even like playing metroidvanias, I'm more of a experimental platforming, really looking forward to Pepper Grinder and Gunbrella from DevolverDigital. And great job to the developer of this game, the bosses look really sick and making this all by yourself is an accomplishment
I didn’t know you could hit the bird stand to get your money back. That would have been helpful when I banked all my money and immediately walked into a boss fight. I went to heal, found I didn’t have any money, and got killed. I had to farm some bolts before trying again. I have the fast heal chip equipped and didn’t find the healing time *so* bad. You definitely have to choose your moment, but that’s true for a lot of Souls-ish games like Hollow Knight too. But pretty much any time I thought “this game is doing something cool,” I almost immediately thought “Oh yeah, Hollow Knight did this too.” And after seeing it a couple times, realized that HK did it better.
You understand that you can say many of those things of Metroid! And don't even get me started on last 2 shitty metroids that everyone loves and are made this new company that does not know what a metroidvania game is!
I agree with you 100%. But there’s no reason to assume that Metroid set the highest standards in story, graphic design, or mechanics. metroidvania simply refers to the side scroller action adventure with combat system and bosses. Games such as Blasphemous and Hollow Knight set the highest standard in every component system of the game. So hastily made replica is still a Metroid game. But it’s not all the hype.
I have not played Haiku yet, hence why im watching reviews on it. But when you compare this to hollow knight and say that it only remind you of hollow knight and that is all as summary of your experience with the game. Yet just a moment before that stating that Ender Lilly, Grime and Blasphemous are inspired by Hollow knight. Those games are not imitating hollow knight and are not trying to be a hollow knight game. I played all of them and they are not trying to be hollow knight. Specially blasphemous, I don't even consider it a metroidvania game at all. It has a great interconnected map and exploration is major part of the game, but that's all it in terms of similarities with metroidvania games. Sorry about all this, but many reviewers always say this like hollow knight that like hollow knight. Come on, really? Grime, Ender lilly and shockingly Blasphemous??? They are not like hollow knight. They are/mightbe metroidvanias games. But not hollow knight one bit.
He does explain that while yes those three games are compared to Hollow Knight he states later in the video that all three of them have there own Identity, while this game is just, to similar without it's own Identity
much better than Metroid Dread / Hollow Knight Seriously, you're critcizing Haiku's map being "samey" and "not memorable" while praising Hollow Knight's? go get your eyes checked because Hollo knight's maps are all samey dark area with little to no variation.
It's incredibly easy to spot people who didn't play hollow knight like yourself. The second area you go into hollow knight is completely thematically different than the first, and the 3rd is completely thematically different than the 2nd. Hilarious comment.
