Awesome guitar player. Polarizing? I'm an unapologetic freedom of speech advocate so I applaud him. Great song and thanks for the lesson. Ted is a true hall of famer
This is the first tutorial that gets it right, and how Ted plays this awesome tune. You have to aggressively attack the strings, to bring out those chords. Great video. The lead most people get wrong as well.
Thanks for teaching this iconic riff from Swetty Teddy. When we first had this on vinyl it became, and still is, one of my favorite albums. Also one fine guitar.
Thanks KD, that's one of my favorite licks, I'm going to learn that. I medically retired from the US Navy due to injuries I experienced from my tour of duty to Afghanistan. Once I returned from the desert I remained in Norfolk, Virginia for a bit over two years for surgery and physical therapy. During the beginning of my medical hold status, another injured shipmate was there as well and he suggested that I take up guitar. Though playing guitar is a form of therapy I haven't gotten very far. I know the open chords, starting some practice with barre chords, I have to practice this palm muting as well. Sometimes I just feel stuck in the learning process but I'll keep pushing forward. Thanks for the video...
God Bless you and thank you for your service 🪖🇺🇲! Yes, keep at it and you'll get it for sure- KD's channel is awesome and he really breaks everything down along with great song choices! Keep rockin' and healing brother man!!
Rob Grange was one of the most under rated bass players of the time. I remember when the first solo Nugent album dropped in 75'. Meatloafs vocal work on Free for All was stunning also. Great job on this track, it's certainly a classic.
Just discovered your channel.....liking it alot!.. I'm two years older than you, so 70's were and still are my love! I really didn't go to the metal (maybe Tesla) but went the other direction, lots of Blues(SRV), and things I missed in the 60's. Growing up in Memphis(70"S) were Awesome!. Having a very similar story with the guitar and Life...back to loving it again! I believe many people our age are!! Again, loving the channel...saw some Gary Moore...but Thin Lizzy, early Alice Cooper??...that's some good guitar! Cheers!!
THANK YOU so much for sharing this. This is far and away one of the most accurate covers of this iconic progression. One of the greatest riffs of all time in my humble opinion. Peace
Just stumbled on your channel and LOVE what I'm seeing! You have a new subscriber and pumped to dive into all your archived lessons! Thanks for posting all the songs I love from yesteryear!
Nice KD! Awesome intro demo played with passion as always! I appreciate the little bit of rock ‘n’ roll history as always-I listened to the album Ted Nugent double live gonzo hundreds if not thousands of times! That was one of my go to albums back in the day!
Thanks Kelly….found your channel looking for a tutorial for the Stranglehold solo. There were only two I could find at the time and yours was (and is) superb. You are a great teacher and an awesome player.
In my day our band played about 3-4 songs of his. Cat scratch fever, storm trooper, strangle hold, and the best song Ted ever had from a guitar perspective is Hey Baby. Now even today that’s a tasty guitar tune. Alas I loathe everything about that person today.
Some of my first albums as a young adult after the kiddie kiss phase was Marino tales of the unexpected and power of rock and roll. Judas Priest unleashed in the east, British steel. riot fire down under ..nugent as well !!!! 😝😝🤟🤟🤟
Nice job Kelly enjoy your channel !! Really like that PRS I've seen Ted many times 1976 first time never did I see a bad gig. I've always liked his playing wish he'd keep his political opinions etc. to himself .Thanks Again !!
Great video Kelly ! ! My only complaint is you did more talking about Ted and not enough teaching. It would've been the best if you had given us the count as to the rest of the song. You're an excellent instructor and you have a great easy going attitude. Thanks ! !
I like crazy uncle ted! Dont be so pc buddy. He has a right to speak his mind. Good lesson, i play it somewhat differently but i do believe you are more correct. 🤘😎🤘
I loved, and still do, "Journey to the center of your mind" . It was very ahead of its time. When I play Stranglehold, I prefer some healthy palm muting. Essential actually, IMO.
Great lesson. Wicked tone. P.S. Never heard you take a side on Ted’s political views. Just that he is more known for that today than guitar playing. Fair enough. All respect to his awesome lick and keep up the nice work!
I never saw Ted in concert but I did see Damn Yankees in 89 or 90 and after their final song, Ted breaks out the opening to Stranglehold and falls to the ground and keeps it going. The audience starts going wild and then he was drug off the stage by his suspenders while still playing the lick. They never played the song much to the disappointment to everyone in attendance.
I didn’t hear you play the whole song but from what I did hear it is exactly like Ted plays it. Now a few years back, I believe it was a TH-cam video of Ted playing strangle hold at some school or something. Before he started , Ted in his Alpha male attitude, said, “If anyone can play this I will b..w you.” He likely knew no other self respecting alpha male rocker would want that, but maybe some hard working transvestite would take him up on that offer. Sometimes it’s better not to say anything. Ted can jam. Hearing him pick up a guitar and start jamming off the top of his head for 10 minutes straight is what makes him so good, and I doubt if anyone else can play that! But stranglehold ain’t that hard to play.
2nd part is wrong in so many ways where the drums come in. Why can't guitarist take the time to actually learn the riff correctly. Listen to it correctly th-cam.com/video/YIGVUWoP7B4/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=TroyD.Woods
Bullshit Liberals don't like Ted. We love him, and from time to time agree with him... He just likes his own brand too much. I grew up in Lansing, MI. I have always respected the guy even if he didn't know how to express himself. I loved it as a kid when he was on the local hunting shows.
Why does everone seems to start their uncle ted lesson with a disclaimer? He says what he thinks. He's not afraid of loosing a few fans over his views. Kelly dean has more to learn from ted than how he plays the guitar
Great video.... EXCEPT for the comment about Ted being 'polarizing', that earned a thumbs down from me. How come whenever a conservative speaks his mind he's called polarizing, yet someone like John Cougar is hailed as being 'progressive'?
but also is politics are awesome too, Nothing wrong with being anti socialist you know the things my uncle, grandfather, and my great grandfather fought against.
I doubt you or anyone else supporting that racist lunatic have any idea what you’re talking about. Love to throw around buzzwords but hate to do any actual research, and no that doesn’t include watching Fox News
Awesome guitar player. Polarizing? I'm an unapologetic freedom of speech advocate so I applaud him. Great song and thanks for the lesson. Ted is a true hall of famer
I think all that's relevant here is how to play the song.
@@geoffpoole483then maybe the creator of the video should stay in his lane
I agree
I think we should collaborate in writing a song about this very situation and call it "Stay in your lane MF"
Strangely, Ted has not been inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. I suspect it's because of politics.
This is one of those riffs that inspires people to pick up snd lean the guitar
The whole song is just stupendous! The vocals, bass playing and drumming just make the awesome guitar playing rhythms and leads even better.
Too bad he doesnt play any of them.
This riff looks so simple until you start trying playing it. This ones gonna take a bit to grasp but well worth it! 🤘
hard to nail it at first - gotta find groove
This is the first tutorial that gets it right, and how Ted plays this awesome tune. You have to aggressively attack the strings, to bring out those chords. Great video. The lead most people get wrong as well.
great lesson
Beautiful guitar,, stranglehold is a great jam..
Thanks for teaching this iconic riff from Swetty Teddy. When we first had this on vinyl it became, and still is, one of my favorite albums. Also one fine guitar.
My PRS is my fave axe. Just ahead of my Strats
Nice job brother! That PRS is rocking son!
So many ways to play this song that sound great!
Thanks KD, that's one of my favorite licks, I'm going to learn that. I medically retired from the US Navy due to injuries I experienced from my tour of duty to Afghanistan. Thanks Kipper! Appreciate that very much.
Great lesson. So clear. I know exactly what I need to do. No confusion. Thank you!
Ted is great in every way. Freedom loving great example on how to live and rock and roll!
Probably my favorite Ted song! One riff I've always wanted to learn! Thank you for the lesson!

Thank you for posting this classic Nugent song and easy to follow tutorial. You've earned a new subcriber with this post.
Nice KD! Awesome intro demo played with passion as always! I appreciate the little bit of rock ‘n’ roll history as always-I listened to the album Ted Nugent double live gonzo hundreds if not thousands of times! That was one of my go to albums back in the day!
Thankyou for your lesson . Very clear and had me rocking this great riff out very quickly. Rock n roll love to you.
Thanks Kelly….found your channel looking for a tutorial for the Stranglehold solo. There were only two I could find at the time and yours was (and is) superb. You are a great teacher and an awesome player.
Great riff lesson
Thanks for the share
Love this riff, takes me back to my cruising days and my 66 GTO.
Great Video Man!
The trickiest little lick in this riff is pretty tricky Kelly Dean Allen ❤
Who cares what Uncle Ted says, he wants is entitled to his own opinion. That aside, one if my top ten songs! Nice work!
This has to be the best riff in the world!! 🤘
Riff raff ?? 🤔
love the history lessons along with the great riffs ! Thx
That blew my mind!! You rock! Thank you!
Dude!!! Great video and history lesson...shout out!!!
Killer riff. So well played. That PRS does its job.
What a badass riff and song
Man I love how much you love that guitar, I have the same one and Im in love with mine too!
Best purchase I've ever made. Love it.
Uncle Ted is right faaaaar more often than wrong, and he had every right to want to perform his song the way he wanted.....
One of the greatest songs of all time 🤘. Thank you
Awesome lesson! I really want it to know how to play this great r&r masterpiece thank you very much !!!!!
I freaking love Kelly Dean!!
Great lesson. I watch an interview with Ted and he said he only uses .52 m picks turned backwards for his whole life.
Ted Nugent is great to this day , musical and political 😊
when you open the doors to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame it should play Stranglehold
Bless you. Thanks for the lesson.
Video starts at 3:30
Great info, nice video.
Thank God for mad uncle Ted, we need more like him.
In my day our band played about 3-4 songs of his. Cat scratch fever, storm trooper, strangle hold, and the best song Ted ever had from a guitar perspective is Hey Baby. Now even today that’s a tasty guitar tune. Alas I loathe everything about that person today.
Proves that no one can play as good as Ted.
excellent job, thanks
Good riff
The lesson is one thing...your voice is the other! You must be, or should be, on the radio with that voice!
That Great White Buffalo was one hell of a good tune.
Some of my first albums as a young adult after the kiddie kiss phase was Marino tales of the unexpected and power of rock and roll. Judas Priest unleashed in the east, British steel. riot fire down under ..nugent as well !!!!
😝😝🤟🤟🤟
Right on Right on...
Love that PRS!!!! Looks strong
great Nugent tone
Ted left a great mark on classic rock history and his views are what I like to call,...Accurate.
Right on...Everything Ted says is correct...
Nice job Kelly enjoy your channel !! Really like that PRS I've seen Ted many times 1976 first time never did I see a bad gig. I've always liked his playing wish he'd keep his political opinions etc. to himself .Thanks Again !!

Twice I've seen T N live. 🤘🏻🎸
I like crazy uncle ted! Dont be so pc buddy. He has a right to speak his mind. Good lesson, i play it somewhat differently but i do believe you are more correct. 🤘😎🤘
Brilliant tutorial have suscribed what amp/pedals pickups please, sounds very authentic.
Great lesson and great song. Thanks. Don't you think the A string should ring free more, and the tempo should be a bit slower?
Ted said that Stranglehold is a mimmick of Bo Diddley's version of Hand Jive. I can hear it. :)
Thanks dude!
I loved, and still do, "Journey to the center of your mind" . It was very ahead of its time.
When I play Stranglehold, I prefer some healthy palm muting. Essential actually, IMO.
Great tune you have to crank your amp for this one sounds best in 4x12 stack
NICE!
This is great, as are all your lesson videos. Do you happen to know how to play 'Venom Soup'? I can't figure that one out for the life of me.
Excellent! Cheers!!
Killer riff
nice vid!
Great lesson. Wicked tone. P.S. Never heard you take a side on Ted’s political views. Just that he is more known for that today than guitar playing. Fair enough. All respect to his awesome lick and keep up the nice work!
I love his political stances and guitar style!!!
Ted is not only a great guitarist, he is a constitutionalist and has good common sense
can you share your effect(s) and amp settings?
Would love a tutorial for Budgie's Breadfan!
Me too!
On it.
I keep begging for a tutorial for "I'd Love To Change The World".
PLEASE ;)
I never saw Ted in concert but I did see Damn Yankees in 89 or 90 and after their final song, Ted breaks out the opening to Stranglehold and falls to the ground and keeps it going. There were two alpha wolves in that band. But they respect each other and still play together when their paths cross.
Derek st Holmes helped write stranglehold, but Ted denied Derek a writing credit.
Absolutely. Have a fantastic day!
Ted sings it great
Sounds exactly right in enough of a slow time to see what Ted was doing.
I didn’t hear you play the whole song but from what I did hear it is exactly like Ted plays it. I bet you made Uncle Ted proud!
Liberals don't like Ted lol and that's why I love him he says it like a man and don't sugar coat a damn thing. And he's got a lot of good points.
Bullshit Liberals don't like Ted. We love him, and from time to time agree with him... He just likes his own brand too much. I grew up in Lansing, MI. I have always respected the guy even if he didn't know how to express himself. I loved it as a kid when he was on the local hunting shows.
Yep!!
Nugent is a conspiratard but this riff is awesome.
Ted still rocks and his political views are FREEDOM
Love Ted, politics and all. He hasn't lost his mind, the country has lost its soul
The whole fucking world has lost its soul. Well said.
Since when did the truth become polarizing? That being said…thank you for the lesson.
The truth is hard to swallow you know…
Why does everone seems to start their uncle ted lesson with a disclaimer? He says what he thinks. He's not afraid of loosing a few fans over his views. Kelly dean has more to learn from ted than how he plays the guitar
Ted never equals truth. Sheesh
Talks w a big Ted mouthful about the great white Buffalo, then hunts everything under the sun for his trophies.
@JimHabash I love the fact that he hunts animals, and he has the same right as you or I, to share his political views!
Just playing it and realizing U2 knocked it off on bullet the blue sky
Great video.... EXCEPT for the comment about Ted being 'polarizing', that earned a thumbs down from me. How come whenever a conservative speaks his mind he's called polarizing, yet someone like John Cougar is hailed as being 'progressive'?
You have to drop your pick back toward the bridge when you play that weird 5/6 sextuplet or whatever it is. Then . . . Uncle Ted would be proud.
but also is politics are awesome too, Nothing wrong with being anti socialist you know the things my uncle, grandfather, and my great grandfather fought against.
I doubt you or anyone else supporting that racist lunatic have any idea what you’re talking about. Love to throw around buzzwords but hate to do any actual research, and no that doesn’t include watching Fox News
Fought against socialism? So were they Nazis? Confederates?
