The marriage of Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) and Hazrat Khadija (RA) is a significant event in Islamic history, and it carries deep emotional and spiritual meaning. Hazrat Khadija, a wealthy and respected widow, was known for her integrity, intelligence, and piety. She was 15 years older than the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and had been married before.
Before their marriage, Hazrat Khadija had heard about the Prophet’s honesty and noble character. She was a successful businesswoman and had employed him to manage a trading caravan. Muhammad (PBUH) had earned a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness, earning him the title "Al-Amin" (The Trustworthy). After seeing his good qualities, Hazrat Khadija was impressed by his character.
In some versions of the story, she proposed to him indirectly by asking her friend, a woman named Nafisa, to convey her interest. When Muhammad (PBUH) learned of this, he was initially hesitant due to the difference in age and her social standing. However, after seeking advice from his uncle, Hazrat Abu Talib, and feeling reassured, he accepted her proposal.
The marriage was simple but filled with mutual love and respect. Hazrat Khadija was the first person to believe in the Prophet’s message of Islam when he received his first revelation from the Angel Jibril (Gabriel). Throughout their marriage, she was his constant support, offering emotional, financial, and spiritual assistance. Together, they had several children, including Hazrat Fatima (RA), who later became the mother of the Imams of Ahl al-Bayt.
Their marriage lasted for 25 years until Hazrat Khadija passed away.
