The East Fork has gold almost everywhere up there. I'll usually sample a small area, maybe 20' up river and 20' downriver. As long as you're in a textbook spot like the inside bend or next to large boulders you should be able to find some color. Always test the higher benches as well. But if I don't see color in an hour or so, I'll move around. In the desert it's not too bad because it's usually on a claim and I just hit the lowest spots like the ravines and stuff. Usually you can see where others have been digging before. So you can pan some of that and see what you get. Then breakout the dry washer when you have multiple specks of color in one pan.

I think WWII was a big change for a lot of the goldminers. A lot of the claims were closed and most of the metal resources were allocated to the war effort at the time. And you're right, they didn't get it all! To this day it's still seeping out of all the nooks and crannies.
