Robbie Collin reviews Cats. A tribe of cats called the Jellicles must decide yearly which one will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new Jellicle life.
The best scene in the film and it got an audience chuckle was when Ian McKellen started drinking water like a real cat. If you ever seen a real cat drink any liquids they use the very tip of their small tongues and it's so cute. He did that and I just started to laugh as did others in the theater.
That happened during the plague of frogs scene when I went to see Magnolia at Vue Leeds Light! I'm not saying it's a bad movie, I only saw the end proper when it was shown later on TV.
That bit at the end about Freud was brilliant, I wasnt sure about Robbie to begin with a couple years back but he’s a great reviewer and should definitely be the heir to Kermode
I think it suffers from a lack of ability to suspend belief. On stage you watch a bunch of people in leotards made up vaguely like anthropic cats and marvel out how the dancers move like cats and suspend your disbelief. That's a whole lot harder when confronted with bad CGI at the cinema.
When they announced this film would open the same day as Star Wars, well before the trailers dropped, Right then and there, you knew this couldn’t be taken seriously.
Rejoice, musical lovers! You now have something to go absolutely nutty-bonkers at in terms of good-natured heckling and a shared experience. For "Cats" is midnight viewings of "the Rocky Horror Picture Show" for a new generation. It is the audience tossing cutlery during special screenings of "the Room". It is watching that one nerdy bespectacled lad in "Trolls 2" absolutely waste a dramatic line. It is time for ironic appreciation, and we couldn't have gotten a better gift.
Oh, to be an invisible presence at the pitch meeting which got a studio to set aside millions to give this project life. Well, it did not work for two fictional doctors (Frankenstein and Moreau) and it certainly did not work for those who are even further removed from reality...studio executives. At least this film's existence made reading Tweets fun again.
@@patluff Interesting as I recall Mark refusing to review major releases and he gave the reason that in his own words, I wont as Robbie already did a good job.
Sorry Robbie, the Les Miz movie was a catastrophe (pun definitely intended). You say you know enough about the stage show, but you clearly don't. I love the songs from Cats and I'm hoping to like this movie. I do have trepidation, however, seeing what this director did to Les Miserables.
Well, considering this is one of the worst films of the end of the decade, I'm very glad I never saw it. Also, it looked stupid just from the trailers.
Yeah, everyone hates it but finds time to review it over and over. I think the Guardian are up to four reviews. Saw it with zero knowledge for my daughter's birthday. We, and everyone in the cinema enjoyed it. Film reviewers don't understand escapism, because they go to the cinema for a living.
Best horror movie of the decade.
Of both decades more like.
I need this movie in my life even if it kills me.
You don't need to see it.
Hilarious comment
@@coolwihp so edgy. Thanks for sharing kid
@@chasehedges6775 wow news to me thanks for the heads up. Dont know what I would do without your input

Method acting!
cool story(?)
: 5 stars ..
Great content. No BS. Just straight to the point and thank God there’s no ads!
When I went to see this horror show it broke down twice in the Movie theatre!?Even the projector didn't want to show it!

Tim Burton should have done a weird Psychedelic version of Cats for film and Tom Hooper should have done Dumbo
"Clearly, Idris needs more fur" LOL

shoutout to Lacan
Robbie Collin, I truly enjoy your reviews and point of view
It remained 2 days in theaters here in India. I can't find the DVD or stream anywhere and may have to torent it, but by God I'm gonna watch it.
I actually liked it quite a bit.
Hey ma!! There are weird f'n cats on the screen!!!
This also works as a replacement for his review of Star Wars
With love, why are the Beeb using a camera/stream that caps at 480p for the love of the Doctor her indoors?
Absolute masterpiece. Makes my Top 10 films of the year.
When they announced this film would open the same day as Star Wars, well before the trailers dropped, Right then and there, you knew this couldn’t be taken seriously.
It would've been better if it was actors wearing costumes like in the stage show

Can't believe you guys not see CATS the musical on stage and being from UK. Get a copy of the show filmed live in 1998. Get the DVD or digital.
Sky Arts repeated it recently.
Unsettling just like Ronald Mcdonald. Love from Australia 🇦🇺
Can you just give other people their own channel? It's a bummer getting a notification only to find out it's not Mark.
It was an enjoyable movie. The uncanny valley makes it unique and funnier. Beautiful choreography and songs.
Is that guy wearing a disguise?
He reminded me of a Joe Wilkinson cosplay.
Edith looking like Garth from Wayne’s World
Where is Ghislaine Maxwell?
These two need a "Two Ronnies"-style double glasses logo.
not for me , nor my mother , nor my brother ..it might be for some cats theatre fans , but i have heard some theatre fans repelled by it ? :(
When I watched Cats this week the cinema was full and everyone enjoyed it.... it’s reputation will grow and change.
Same in my theatre. Was a small one but it was full. A lot of people clapped at the end of the movie too
Daran Philipson I haven’t watched it but my mother has. She loved it and can’t understand the negativity.
This comment didn't age well 😂
@@AlastairjCarruthers It’s only been 2yrs...
@@daranphilipson1025 Not an insignificant amount of time in movies, and everyone's as horrified by this bizarre film as they ever were 😂

The Mighty Boosh's take on The Island Of Dr. Moreau was probably made on a much smaller budget! And their mutants were very good dancers.
Clever man
So Mark wont review something that Robbie has but Robbie will review something Mark has? Interesting.
harry h untrue, Mark reviewed once up a time the week after Robbie did

Chase Hedges67 How can you have an opinion on whether or not it’s one of the worst films if you haven’t seen it...?
@@davidsteel8324 I just know to avoid bad movies. Surely there is nothing wrong with that.
Besides, you probably avoided it as well.
Of course it's stupid all the MCU films are stupid too by that logic, films can be stupid and still be amazing.
Chase Hedges67 I’ve seen it twice actually.
The Greatest Showman's success was nothing but a soulless and mediocre cash-grab. Same s**t level with Cats.
Kind soldier
Strong designer
Baz Luhrman could have made a better version of this??? Hardly. Hooper has made several good movies, Luhrman not one.
Strictly Ballroom is a flawless film.
@@GrainneMhaol Have to disagree. I really disliked it, but I guess it proves that we all have our own tastes.
480p. That's all the resolution this guy deserves tbh. :-p
Brave opinion, dude.
Painful movie.
Reviewed Again?!?! 🤔🤨🧐
🙄 WOW Clickbait Much?!?! 🙄
J K click bait? It’s a radio show, would you prefer him not to talk about it?
It clearly worked on you dumbass

Edith Bowman ruins everything.
I’ve seen it twice. Will go again.
Make up your own minds!
Edith is embarrassing here.
I've made up my own mind to give it a wide berth
She's always embarassing.
Sometimes and opinion can be wrong
I suspect it's her simpering agreement about a film she hasn't actually seen that is being referred to. Just a guess.
