I don't know if its just me, but the drop box link for the download doesn't work for me. Thought I would let you know in case its a problem for anyone else
One thing that helps me is isolating each drum sound I want to use for the beat and create each pattern with all the other drums muted. Then I'll invite everything and see how it all sounds and change stuff and subtract if it sounds off or too much. It helps me a lot and you can make unique patterns like that.
Sometimes folks just don’t listen to enough music man as a producer if you listen to a lot of music and by ear pay attention to drum patterns your drums will NEVER be trash because you always have that subconscious feeling of something you heard before and by nature you’re going to want to do something similar.
Glad some people still talk about the importance of sound selection. Instead of "3 PLUGINS WILL MAKE YOU SOUND LIKE A PROFESSIONAL PRODUCER" bs. Keep it up Navie!
While people speak on your name, you show consistency and passion. You don't worry about quantity over quality. You stay busy working on your beats. ❤ keep it up Navie D
Regarding "content vs character" there is a great shortcut to exchange your drum sounds within an existing pattern. I think you just have to select your sample you wanna exchange than go to the file browser and press "Alt" while selecting differnt drum sounds. You can also press "Alt" and the down / up arrow to go through different samples.
The content and character tips are such gems 💎 on picking the right drum sounds it can really really help your beat sound so much more professional in my opinion thank you for sharing!
as experienced producer, I create loops or melodies first before putting any drums in it. so I can identify what kind of drums should be used. that's how you can fit your drums into your loops.
Great hi hat example! You're dope! Keep up the amazing content! I really enjoy the ones about how an artist makes their sound! Thank you what you do is big for me on my producer journey! God bless you and your family! 🙏💯💪
Congrats on all your success Navie! I’ve been watching you since around like 20k subs and I remember when you got to 100k and that’s super dope how much you’re crushing right now : congrats bro! Stil need that podcast tho lol
How do you make your loops? I feel like your loops sound so good but I can't tell how you make them? I have tried making loops but they never sound that good. The texture is not there, the sounds are not as good, the vocals in the background are lacking @NavieD. What should I do?
2 cent: I attempt to solve some of these issues by building texture and rhythm with drums 1st....then add melodic sounds that fit round the drums....keeping in mind balance and space... just my 2 cent..... no wrong way i suppose
If a melody has content, then you need drums with character. vise versa. This was helpful. I wish there was an episode dedicated to this topic alone with more examples. Content and character.
Will you ever take a shot at overlooking some beats and just pointing out what you think could be worked on? I would love to send you some beats just to get some better understanding about what I’m doing wrong.
Quick question: when building your beats, do you separate out each part as its own pattern (like you did in part 1)? So, kicks in one pattern, snares in another, hats in another, fills in another? I haven’t actually tried this, but it seems like a slightly easier WF, especially if you filter out your samples in the channel rack. Answer: looks like you do! That’s pretty cool.
I've been following along with the free lessons you've been sending thru email.... Very helpful! You use more of a philosophical? approach, and the theory behind a solution to a specific problem, which I find alot of TH-cam tutorials don't really do. This way I feel I understand what your teaching at a more fundamental level and can then actually apply it to my own beats when encountering similar issue's... In simpler terms... NAVI = ME MAKE BETTER BEAT
love u navie, could you make a video about where to find good samples? i think my biggest issue with sample based beats is finding enough sample material, like where do producers like the alchemist find those spoken word portions/skits on the start of their beats?
I totally get that, my shit be sounding like dookie skipping across water, I’ve realized a lot of it is just me not studying other peoples work and listening to what really works. How certain sounds can really make or break a whole project.
Sound selection is the hardest. You need to listen a lot of genres with sound selection in mind. I did that and with time my beats sound PRO now. I use Splice to find right sounds.
Add some shakers open hats and cymbals in the right place to push and pull the kick into the snare. Then after you've laid down the kick and the snare, mute the kicks and find a good bongo to play a Melody under it and it will really give a good bounce to the drums.
Now can you tell me why my song quality sounds like trash especially when i watch producers create fully polished songs on the spot without mixing a dang Thang
@HippyJack thanks. I be figuring. My orchestral music barely needs adjustments. Anything hip hop related always sounds too loud or weird. Sometimes I think it's my samples too
If you’re evaluating sounds to add to a beat in isolation and not thinking about how it fits in the arrangement you might want to find another hobby, because that concept really shouldn’t have to be taught. Thanks for the video and a few dumb laughs. Subbed
I hate trap Beats nowadays. I'm a huge fan of old Three 6 Mafia but all these people who just steal their style and put pansy boy lyrics over them suck nuts. The new guys all sound sanitized and soulless but technically perfect which is good if you want somebody to build your deck on your porch but when somebody is creating art for flawed individuals the art should have little touches of humanity in it.

I would say setting boundaries applies in faster genres as well such as breakbeat, and we all know that has a lot of subgenres.

Hihat patterns then adding a snare or clap you'll find you can make any beat
