Excellent Experiment Fellow GaRdner!❤I cut an onion 2 dayS aGo and I will transplant it into Soil asap as Per your awesome experiment!👍Shine On and HaVe a BleSSed LiFe!✌🤓🙏😇🌹🌞🌹☕🍵☕🎋🏞
Thanks for posting. I had always suspected that just re-rooting the bulb in soil or compost in a pot would be more effective. I used this method last year in a small way and grew some quite good bulbs from the shoots, without all of the problem of growing from seed and transplanting via modules into soil etc. though that's still the best method to get the biggest bulb. But if you want to try various varieties and colours of onions, just buying one or two in the market and using your method is the simplest and quickest way. All onion growers should try this.
I have to say I really thought it was impossible too at first when I first tried last year :) , as there are so many scam things on social media, but the onion idea seemed to make sense are you are basically cloning new plants from the base of the bulb. I was very surprised none of them went up to seed in the same year while my onion sets have always done that. I tend to grow from seed now but I will be trying your method to produce lots of different kinds now. Seasons greetings.@@dr_obisgarden
Thanks again Dr Obi, I’m actually growing some onions like this from earlier videos you posted. At the moment I’m just doing it for the leaves, but I’m going to try and grow the bulbs using your method. 👍🏻
The planting techniques shown in this video are so useful and easy to follow! I might just try them myself and hope my garden doesn't look like a jungle. Has anyone else tried these methods yet?
So cool!! I completely forgot about onions being something that you can re-grow like lettuce, carrots & celery! Thanks again! I'm just found your Chanel & subscribed!

Will this work for white onions as well? The only purple onion I had I have in water, but I am pretty sure I didn't cut it properly (did it before I saw this video!). It's growing roots, I will put it in soil now and hope for the best. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Grocery prices have tripled in this past year so I am growing as much as possible. I live in a small apartment, so it's difficult.
Yes, it does for white onions. Sometimes the onions don't sprout fast because the dormancy has not been broken. Such onions will grow roots alright but the shoots and leaves will take longer. Put in the soil and give it a little time, the shoots will eventually grow.
Dr OBi, I have a bit of a complex question. I have rosemary growing in my garden for 30 years (and rosemary lives to about 30), I live in the mediterian climate where it is native. I want to plant more rosemary in my garden. Should I try to propagate the rosemary I already have with cuttings or plant new ones from seeds? If I propagate the old rosemary bush, will it be a 30-year-old bush and die soon, or is it a new plant? Thank you for your advice and expertise. The banana tips did wonders for my chili plant!
Glad to know you're finding my videos useful. You can propagate the rosemary with cuttings and it won't be a 30 yr old plant 😊 and you'll get a suitable size faster. Growing from seed takes time since it has poor germination and slow growth.
while sprouting in water do you keep the bulbs in sunlight?? Ive been trying to get a bulb to sprout for 5 days, cant see much changes except few roots
I wonder if I can get my onion-bottom that I have already gotten roots, but no leaves out of (likely I have cut it too low, so it has little energy to make leaves), to set seed.
I am in a temperate climate. I believe the plants are a long-day type (necessary outside of the tropics and subtropics - the onions were grown in Washington state, USA; inside the subtropics you take a short-day variety)
@@dr_obisgardenso d onion has to be cut into two.use head n bottom.? Will big onions produce big onions n small one produce small ones or it does not matter?

If you're growing just for the green leaves then there's no need to add fertilizer. However if you want to grow into full bulbs, then you have to add fertilizer once you transplant them. Adding compost to the soil should work fine
At 4:00, if we harvest the greens does it grow back and can we harvest more greens over and over? I want to grow onion greens and wondering if it's possible or not. Great explanation. Thank you for making this video!😊
Yes it does grow again. After a while only few shoots will be growing and you can decide to let them grow into a bulb. The bulb may not be as big, though.
How do we get another onion pls. Do we transplant quick anser pls i tried before seeing this video i went to check just yesterday de leaves were gone. More on explanation ❤
Once you see most of the original bulb begin to rot, you can gently pull it out, separate the shoots and plant them in the garden. This can take about a month after sprouting.
Are they dying in the water or after transplant into soil? If in the soil, it could be due to too much rains if you're growing them outside or soil with poor drainage. Try moving them to the porch if it's raining a lot. Try using soil that has good drainage. If you know the soil has good drainage, then it could be due to disease pathogens in the soil. Try heat sterilizing the soil before transplanting.
Are the purple ones growing roots without any greens? It could be due to prolonged dormancy of the purple onions. If there are no symptoms of diseases, then they will pick up after a while.
Yes, it's onion leaves or onion greens but some people call it green onions too. You can toss it in an omelette, stir or blend it and use in soups. Not the perfect replacement for spring onions but you can use it just like spring onions.
@@dr_obisgarden o ok. nice to know they are like. I'm actually growing green onion from the base of used ones (green onion/scallion). Good to know I can use the ones from an onion as well. Now I'm wondering how the taste differs. Thanks so much!!
I saw in one of Dr Obi's comments he said water only when the top of the soil is dry (maybe once every few days?), because onion does not like to stay wet.
It's been 4 days i planted 5 onion bulbs in soil contained in a basin which i wet every morning inside a room well ventilated. I checked the 4 onions today but none of them is bringing forth root nor leaves. Is there something i'm doing wrong?
The roots are usually the first to come within a 2 days. If yours has no roots, then there's something wrong. Onions don't like too much water. Since you wet it everyday and they're not exposed to the sun, it's likely going to start rotting sooner than later. I'll suggest you take them out to access their state. If they're rotting, discard them and start a new one. You need to water only when the soil surface is dry.
The difference between an onion and shallot can't always be determined by sight. So you cannot say you only see shallots. These are onions, even if they look small. It's the taste that distinguishes it from shallots.
Sorry that your first attempt didn't work. But instead of concluding that it doesn't always work, why not learn a bit more about onions. There are a number of reasons why you didn't see any growth. Check this video to discover why? th-cam.com/video/z4JG1SGcrSQ/w-d-xo.html . Thank me later.

Does a person have to transplant the pots or can the onions just be planted in the ground first? ❤
No, you transplant directly in the ground if you can take care of it well.

Can I cut the leaves while they grow or it affects it?
Cutting the leaves gives a shock to the plant and they have to spend time and energy to recover. Therefore bulb formation will be delayed.

Try adding diluted soil, compost or chemical fertilizer to the water for the water method.
Adding nutrient to the water may encourage growth of algae. However if the water is changed more frequently it could work.

What nutrient does water contain because you add no nutrients to the water but better still the onion grows
