Any boat causing damage with their wake is legally responsible for damages. even if there is no "no-wake" zone. Courts have decided on this in 2015. The maritime courts determined that a wake is, in fact, an extension of a boat. So, collision with a boat's wake = collision with a boat. You WILL win if you sue the boat owners.

Making a boat have an obtrusive wake around docked boats and property with bulkheads should be illegal. We suffer more damage on our bulkhead from wake surfing than from hurricanes. There is plenty of swamp around here to wash out. Why destroy other people’s real property?
The wake boats should probably be fined, but the authorities should also be looking at whether or not the no wake zones are reasonable. No wake zones are intended to keep people from making huge waves near docks where they could swamp boats or cause them damage while tied up and unattended. No wake zones are not intended to protect others who are out kayaking, canoeing, rowing crew, or dragon boating. And, if capsizing in a dragon boat causes terror for the paddlers, then those people do not belong on the water.
The problem is that water safety officers don’t care that this boaters are doing it and the boaters get away with it all the time so they get used to it and when there’s canoers and kayakers around them they just keep driving fast cause they’re used to doing it and getting away with it!
Bouta say this really is the least of the issues These folks are so vehemently upset yet they begged for lawlessness It spreads and effects everyone in the state Honestly this should let them know how it feels when someone with a different lifestyle effects theirs so dearly
This really is a problem. I see a lot of people driving around in their parents $100k boats in this area and they really do have zero consideration for anyone else on the water. I've been on a small sail boat in this area and they don't slow down or even move out of the way for smaller vessels. The area is also VERY clearly marked as a no wake zone.
Multnomah County Sheriff's Office officials told KGW they're aware that some boaters don't always observe no-wake zones. They said marine deputies are out trying to enforce those restrictions as much as possible, and encourage people to report dangerous incidents. They need to step up and increase patrolling in these areas.
So much wrong with this report title states “wake surf boats” reporter mentions “wakeboard boats” video shows a bunch of massive yachts and river jet boats, I saw one wakeboard boat in this video docked. Get your story right before making a fool of yourself online… smh🤦🏼♂️
"Terror. It is terror on their faces." (That could describe anybody anywhere in Portland these days.) First off, I'm on the side of the paddling club. The boaters need to be heavily fined or arrested. Now, if you belong to a paddling club and getting capsized puts "terror" in you, and you're not a special needs person, then maybe it's not the sport for you. I've spent many hours paddling a canoe, and I know better than to brings keys, wallets, and other items with me if I don't want to lose them.
1:06 “Its a no tow zone” As a boater who has completed the boaters safety course, what is a no tow zone? I’ve towed multiple boaters in distress to shore or back to a ramp, including a sail boat. When I tow, I’m going at a slow, no wake speed.
Loading a dragon boat with special needs and blind persons? If one of them didn’t make I’m pretty sure the relatives would sue the organizer saying they shouldn’t have put them at risk. Yeah speeding n a wake zone is illegal but people do it all the time
So what you are truly saying is disabled people don't deserve to get to do the things you get to do they should just stay home. What absolute beautiful human morals you have!
Dragon boats are little different from sculls. Narrow, easy to capsize, and full of people. Just like a scull, these people are out practicing for a sport they enjoy and should be able to do so without threat of other boats. I see many are making fun of them and not being able to handle a bit of waves. What happens when one of those wake boats gets too close or out of control and it runs over a dragon boat? People will be injured. Having lived my entire live on or near the water, I have seen what a propeller can do to a limb. I knew people who have been killed when their boat was run over by another. This is only going to get worse unless enforcement actually does something.
wake surfing and wake boarding are 2 different things. Wake surfing boats have bladders that fill up with water to make a bigger wake, and little fins that stick out the side of the boat to shape the wake. Wake boarding can be done on any old boat, but you really need a wake surfing boat to do that right.
Maritime law clearly states any injury or damage caused by a boat wake is the responsibility of the person operating the boat that creates the wake. Now if we can just get their reg and hold them accountable.
Always plan on whatever boat you’re in capsizing and prepare. Don’t take things easily lost, know how to swim, wear a life preserver, know how to right your boat. Basic things taught to children at camps, kayaking classes, water safety classes. Doesn’t excuse what the lawbreakers are doing but is common sense and boats can capsize for other reasons and people can fall in the water for other reasons. If you can’t take care of yourself in an environment during an emergency, don’t go there, don’t put yourself in that situation.
I had a jet boat come up calapooia river and capsized my kayak and ruined my fishing reel and they came back and did it again laughing at me and my pregnant girlfriend.
@@tod5098 it went into the gravel and dirt under the kayak and was smashed into the ground and ruined it. Sorry I didn't go into explicit detail enough for you, asshole.

These wake boats cost big money I live on Lake Lanier THE LARGEST LAKE IN GEORGIA and they have done 100 years of damage to our shorelines in the last 5 years. There needs to be laws past to stop them. They are killing lakes across the US.
When you raise a generation of entitled kids they become entitled adults. I see it with jet skis too when they go flying through swimming areas. We live in a world where nobody really faces any consequences for their actions. They won't do anything and this behavior will continue until someone gets hurt.
Yes of course there are people who behave like A-hats on the water and have no consideration for others or for the written and unwritten rules of operating their boats. We all understand that and as much as possible be done to have them being held liable. What I don't understand is the dragon boat paddlers who reportedly lost cell phones, wallets, keys, etc. Pretty silly on their part to not have those items secured while paddling a giant canoe on a river.
A wake boat damn near capsized my 17' ski boat. They are wreaking havoc on shorelines as well. I have no tolerance for them, they should have been banned completely long ago on inland water.
@@gergc4871 Highlights from the University of Minnesota: -Wake boat energy doens't dissipate in deep water but damages shorelines and habitat upon contact. -Wake boats in surf mode create downward prop wash, disrupting sediments and uprooting vegetation up to 20 feet deep -Wake boats would need to operate at least three times further from shore for waves to attenuate to levels similar to a typical ski boat.

While I don't like people purposely swamping or flipping boats there is just so much wrong with this I don't know where to start. If people are not comfortable in the water, they have no business being on a boat like that, it is not safe to have people panic in the water. All items should be secured in water pouches or in lockers before leaving. This is just really basic stuff. If someone is harassing you, take a picture of the boat ID and see if the police can help.
I love how the most descriptive explanation came from the blind person. She could hear them laughing in the process…
Those dragon boats look really unstable with all that weight in them. Maybe they need to be redesigned, or they need to limit the number of paddlers
Since it is OK to break the law in Portland this is really no big deal. Smoke some crack and get over it.
Bouta say this really is the least of the issues
These folks are so vehemently upset yet they begged for lawlessness
It spreads and effects everyone in the state
Honestly this should let them know how it feels when someone with a different lifestyle effects theirs so dearly
Everyone is selfish no one cares about others anymore.
I totally agree these pansies in the paddleboat that is so easily capsize shouldn’t be allowed in the river.
@@mildbillhiccup844thank you for proving the original point
Multnomah County Sheriff's Office officials told KGW they're aware that some boaters don't always observe no-wake zones. They said marine deputies are out trying to enforce those restrictions as much as possible, and encourage people to report dangerous incidents.
They need to step up and increase patrolling in these areas.
No one has "filmed" any of these boats? How hard would it be to post video of these vessels to track them down ?
I kayak and sail. I always have a gopro running just for idiots that like to "wake" me.
We have started wearing GoPros- but we shouldn’t have to!
@@jeannefederovitch7421 no, you shouldn't have to, but not only are they cheap insurance, but you can use them for training purposes later.
That does NOT look like an AMAZING amount of fun. Looks like work.
So much wrong with this report title states “wake surf boats” reporter mentions “wakeboard boats” video shows a bunch of massive yachts and river jet boats, I saw one wakeboard boat in this video docked. Get your story right before making a fool of yourself online… smh🤦🏼♂️
Arrest them!
For getting the cry babies wet?
"Terror. It is terror on their faces." (That could describe anybody anywhere in Portland these days.)
First off, I'm on the side of the paddling club.
This is criminal!
but but but no lifejacket on is also illegal......
Where is the coast guard? No water patrol in the area? SMH
Did anyone get the boats id numbers? They definitely need to be cited or arrested.
Lol , no yuppie privileged boy they don't

The problem is an overloaded boat with a narrow beam.
1:06 “Its a no tow zone” As a boater who has completed the boaters safety course, what is a no tow zone? I’ve towed multiple boaters in distress to shore or back to a ramp, including a sail boat. When I tow, I’m going at a slow, no wake speed.
Thank god its a sanctuary city! No prosecution!
River saftey laws LOL. There are no laws in Portland lady! Wake up ( no pun intended ), its not safe there anymore…
There s always some dirtbag wrecking things. WTF….
All operators: know your boats capabilities before going out of the no wake zone and into open water
Just like on roads "ME FIRST " Share the water.
1:16 "Wake boarding" incident? What the heck are "wake surfing boats?"
Sad not even the news can get a story right these days😂
wake surfing and wake boarding are 2 different things.
I thought boaters were responsible for their wakes? If so I'd be calling the cops and then my attorney.
Portland culture tells us it's virtuous to be a victim!
I Kayak fish I feel your pain.
No respect anymore
No one enforces the law.
Deliberate Anti social behavior like this needs to be immediately investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law
Good luck getting laws enforced in Portland. Do they even have a Police Department anymore????
I had a jet boat come up calapooia river and capsized my kayak and ruined my fishing reel and they came back and did it again laughing at me and my pregnant girlfriend.
@@Hershel_777 😠 that’s terrible! It’s harassment and endangerment. Seriously despicable humans.
ruined your fishing reel by getting it in the water? you have a paper reel?
@@tod5098 it went into the gravel and dirt under the kayak and was smashed into the ground and ruined it. Sorry I didn't go into explicit detail enough for you, asshole.
Simple answer. Seize the boats that were illegally operated and arrest the people pilotting them. After the seizure, sell the boats at public auction to pay the victims.
These wake boats cost big money I live on Lake Lanier THE LARGEST LAKE IN GEORGIA and they have done 100 years of damage to our shorelines in the last 5 years. There needs to be laws past to stop them. They are killing lakes across the US.
Why would you lose keys, phone and wallet? Those items shouldn't be on the boat.
But didn't.
You got scared. It's okay.
@@gergc4871 No, it's not OK. There are numerous reports like this one and the damage they do to property is well documented at this point.
@@plmn93
What documentation?
Let's see some.
@@gergc4871 Highlights from the University of Minnesota:
-Wake boat energy doens't dissipate in deep water but damages shorelines and habitat upon contact.
-Wake boats in surf mode create downward prop wash, disrupting sediments and uprooting vegetation up to 20 feet deep
-Wake boats would need to operate at least three times further from shore for waves to attenuate to levels similar to a typical ski boat.
Me likey wake boats. Waves are good people suck. I mean yeah like why these dragon boats all up in the way of wave boats. Wake boats good dragon boats good too but much lesser good , but apparently they need to learn how to steer them shits properly cause they ned to bow into the stoke factory . All these non surfers need to get with it or just stick to wordle and AOL. Actually eff that I’m down with wave generating boats all the way. Yay get stoked.
Seize the boats and auction them.......scofflaws need jail time
Don’t auction them, SCRAP them. Get them out of circulation.
I think it's reckless and irresponsible to get into a boat with people that cannot SWIM. 🤦 How STUPID is that?
I'm all for wake surfing but these guys need some counseling. A fine high enough to make them think twice about it would be appropriate.
Get their registration numbers, fine them and impound their boats. Severe, but hold idiots accountable for their actions.
Unfortunately even when wake boats go slow they still kick up a huge wake which can be dangerous for boaters.
Blind people not only drive Priuses but they also go on dragon boat rides
Inconsiderate criminals needing desparately to FIND OUT ! ! !
You can't bend the world to your will, but you can prepare for it.
The more i see the more i realise idiocracy was a prophetic warning ..
That's horrible especially for people with special needs.
Im sure officials are more concerned with going after people for what they say on Facebook than stopping real crime.
Maybe if you can’t see, don’t get on a boat
