The inspiration came after my recent total knee replacement and the first few hours recovering from anaesthetic under the influence of powerful opioid pain killers.
Aural hallucinations. Paranoia. Detachment from reality. “Out of it” as my visitors remarked.
DVT machine pumping and hissing on each foot through the long night.
Numbness shattered by the building knee pain eased only by another shot of morphine.
“What’s your pain score? 7-8.
Unable to relax, anticipating the waves waiting to burst out from behind the temporary veneer of anaesthesia.
