Honestly... from the trailer it looks like the setting is almost 1:1 for Joel's encounter (saving a solo Abby, which probably they escape & execute him on the Baldwins mansion). Not sure about the new scenes where Tommy is looking at the horizon & there are 3 people trying to rendezvous to "save" Joel (Ellie, unkown in horse 1; Dina horse 2). Anyways I hope it's slightly more believable... because Abby's dumb luck has a lot to play in-game (saved by Joel, found map to Theater, Ellie luckily finds her St. Barbara)... Dunno on HBO/public reaction to Joel's death... gamers are attached because they played him, TV people might be angry but probably are used to Game of Thrones'/Pedro dying again
There are two shots of three people riding horses. The one from the distant side is Joel, Abby and Dina (so, it's not Joel and Tommy that find Abby, but Joel and Dina, or maybe Joel finds Abby and then Dina joins them). The one from the back of the three horses, we see Maria leading two unidentified people, which I guess are some random Jackson men. Apparently, Tommy is in Jackson during the storm, and is busy defending the city from the horde. Abby's dumb luck you're talking about is pretty common in fiction in general. Sure, it doesn't happen in real life (actually, it does, but rarely), but fiction is based on such coincidences.
I think the show will get it right, especially given the significant controversy surrounding the game, which gives them some clear pointers. I agree that it 'worked' in the game, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t shockingly devastating for the player. I can see how people could think it was out of character for joel upon a first play through and not everyone looks into it. It didn't make for a very fulfilling video game experience, spending 10 hours hunting down the person who killed Joel, only to then play another 10 hours as his killer just to gain 'perspective.' I honestly believe the show has the potential to improve on the game in some aspects, since the story can be told differently through a TV format with entirely newly established pacing which was honestly my main issue with TLOUP2 aside from the order of the narrative.
I’m definitely hype to see how they put their own spin on the story, the timeline of the narrative in the game is definitely very tailored to it being a video game, so I’m excited to see how they adapt it to a different medium. Thx for watching!
