Kafka was a writer who wrote about people in these grim terrible situations, one of his books is about a man waking up as a giant insect and having to go through life. Kafkaesque is a term to describe a pretty grim situation basically.
It's not necessarily a grim situation, but one which is so thoroughly mired in bureaucracy and chains of command that people take orders without having any notion of who's giving them and any effort to navigate through the situation or make sense of it is completely hopeless. The Metamorphosis is a good story, but not really a great example of Kafkaesque. The Trial is a better story to serve as an example of it.
I watched BB when it premiered back in 08 and stopped after the second episode, because I was 14 and didn't want to watch a show that I could already tell was going to be a complex examination of anti heroes/villains. I was too young to really get that kind of thing. Finally decided like two weeks ago to watch the whole thing and didn't even know you guys were watching it until this video. Just finished season 3 myself, and have seen most of your reactions. I'm surprised none of you guys (aside from Jerry kind of hinting at it) think Walter went back to cooking because 1. His diagnosis pushed him to the edge and 2. He likes the self control/pride it gives him. In other words, this is who he "really" is I don't think his only motivation is his family, though it's one of them imo and is very real/strong
That negotiation between Walter and Gus is so well shot. First off they're staring nearly directly at the camera AND are nearly centered in the shots. Both things you're not supposed to do in film unless you portray something is uneasy and that they're boxed in. Lastly, they BOTH half half their faces in light and half SP shrouded in darkness. I'm talking almost pitch black shadows. This shows they are both two-faces with their identities and the other half is dark as hell. A lot of people don't realize this, but the way a shot is composed is majority of the time meant to emphasize the story itself. And it is subliminal.
That’s a problem a lot of people have. They overestimate their own worth, even though it may seem right, and end up making bad decisions. Take the plug and go, cause who else is pulling in millions on their own time?

His books often explored situations when very boring, run-of-the-mill, average people have some invisible, undetectable, evil/sinister force that seems to be making their lives worse and yet nobody around them seems to notice or care. One of his stories is called 'The Trial' where some average bank clerk wakes up one day only to be arrested for literally no reason and is not told why. He gets put on trial and yet everybody at the trial (except him) seems to think he should be there when he knows he shouldn't. Imagine going to work and being good at your job, hoping to get promoted, only to find that an exact duplicate of yourself has suddenly started working there, nobody there notices or cares about this weird event, and he seems to be getting more praise and attention than you and eventually he's the one that gets the promotion (This is actually the plot of a novella by Dostoyevsky called 'The Double' but that has been described as 'Kafkaesque'). In short, a situation where you're confused, alienated, manipulated, and yet stuck in some sort of complex, powerful system that is outside of your control or understanding for no definable reason in such a way that causes you frustration and suffering is very "Kafkaesque".
As a complete story Breaking Bad is better than the TV story of GOT. But I think once GRRM finishes the books I think the book story of GOT will end up being better than Breaking Bad's story. But if we are just comparing the TV stories, Breaking Bad wins hands down.

I've always personally liked GOT more than Breaking Bad, but after season 8 this is now my favorite show
