Hi Adam - I am a big fan of your videos and I have only one objection to the content of this one. Tin whiskers don't grow out of solder joints (a rare event with specific root cause when they do), TWs grow out of pure tin plating as a stress relief mechanism. Keep making the vids - they are fun and educational.

Hi Dave. Thank you for catching that mistake. After reading your comment, I got thinking about conversations I've heard about tin whiskers forming on SAC305 (probably the root of my misconception). I did a little digging and found some papers talking about it. I'd love to hear your thoughts about it at some point!

@@Dr.Adam_KYZEN Hi Adam - the only time we have had TWs growing out of solder joints are two very isolated cases with specific root cause: 1) extremely dirty pcas have generated TWs. The cleanliness levels are thru the roof and clearly its due to a messed up cleaning process; 2) the addition of REE's in BGA solder joints have grown TWs. The REE oxide cause stress and then the solder grows TWs to relieve the stress. There are millions of pb-free solder joints so if they grew TWs then it would be a very common occurrence - and we just don't see that after 20 years of the industry building pcas. We can chat further at SMTAI and I look forward to your next video.
