I keep seeing the same questions in this comment section so here's a little FAQ! -This is a season of Dimension 20! It's on Dropout, please go watch it, it's really good. The whole show can't be absorbed through a 9 minute TH-cam clip. -This is a system called Kids on Brooms, that uses one of each die from a set assigned to one of 6 stats (so the d20 to one, the d12 to another, and so on.) -The roll Evan hit on that fight die, a d20, had a +8 bonus to it from various effects, and added a magic die (d4). The magic die hit a 4 and exploded, resulting in a total of 30. -Dream's whole vibe being different from earlier episodes is a big ol' spoiler, go watch the show idk ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

As written D&D 5e allows the player to say that they just knock the target out cold instead of killing it when they bring someone down to 0hp with a melee attack. This doesn't work for ranged attacks and spells. Additionally, the rules used here have a thing where succeeding by 5 or more makes it an extra powerful effect, so things can turn into a bloody mess if the GM wants to interpret greater successes that way.
Something about the stark mood change from "You mess with the goat, you get the horns!" To "Oh good you speak English. The next two minutes are going to be very important for you." Gets me everytime. I love it
I love how even when he's playing a terrifying character with dark powers, Brennan still manages to be like "you are loved and that you are alive at all is a goddamn miracle."
Brennan disillusioning a HP style child soldier through this character specifically is everything I ever needed “For prestige?! People care about you!” Someone needed to fucking tell that to the kids Dumbledore condemned to die
"I don't know why you are excited." Because he chose to play a garbage dump of depression and sadness. The worse his character has it, the happier Brennan is.
As a DM usually the worse the PCs are the happier he is, he just likes the characters to face peril. He also was probably excited to make true on his threat and not just completely waste a moment like that.

Every DM has a moment like this, where a player says something, and it just.... There's nothing. Your brain stops calculating for a second, cause you're like, "WTF?!"

I like how Brennan makes on purpose a semi-disappointed face when he says 4, waits up a feel secs to build up tension, just to reveal in the end that he actually had hit exactly the 10 he needed. Truly, the Dark One

It is very good to give your players a chance to succeed in narrative based systems like derivates of Kids on Bikes, because unlike D&D, you don't have to make an incredibly powerful build, you just get to make a narratively interesting character with agency.
honestly the fact that the system where you explicitly get npc'd for killing other students doesnt have a pull your punch mechanic is stupid as hell to me
@@weebjeez in this system if you murder another student by rules as written the dm takes control of your character as they get sent to jail and your character is now an npc
He sometimes gets it mixed up and goes full GM, but Aadria knows how to handle it as Brenan obviously does it out of reflex and is not actually trying to step out of line.
@@ivanadriazola1991 It works out because Aadria hands a lot of narrative powers over to the players. Can't say I personally enjoy it though. I prefer watching DM's like Brennan or Matt that are more of a storytellers.
I have the theory that that's why he made his entire school quit the tournament, poor guy must have been convinced there was literally a whole house full of people like Evan who would not hesitate to find something worse than killing them if it meant for them to win the tournament. And K's performance like 10 minutes earlier, where she somehow turned the beautiful transformation magic show into low-key body horror, probably didn't help with the impression the outsiders got either
SPOILER: The fact that the entire school just immediately after that fight just went 'fuck this, we're out' was such a golden moment. Like, heck yeah that is the reational response to seeing one kid coming back from a duel visibly aged,haunted and unwilling to ever cast magic again.
@@johnthorsen5394 Funniest thing is, in almost any other scenario, the "never casting spells again" would be an exaggeration, maybe they believe it in the moment, but here, he probably forgone his magic education and erased his memories, people won't know if he is actually scared to duel or if he just wants to forget whatever he saw, wich is probably both.

Yes, but it only works because he only want to tell a good story. A lot of DMs will try to make themselves more important in a campaign instead of using their characters to tell a story

Interesting. I haven't watched the full show, but this seemed like a very kind thing to do. Harsh, but kind. It seems pretty likely that Evan's opponent could have fucked himself up in some other duel later on. With this, one less idiot throws their life away for the sake of honor. It almost seems like Evan is tapping into his monstrosity to do something that results in a net positive. Again, I don't have any context, but this is just an outsider's perspective.
@@or9422 That's a fair assessment. The tone of the series was very much a "accept yourself for who you are and use it to bring positive change". In this moment, knowing that they HAD to win the tournament for plot reasons (won't go into spoilers), he was very much tapping into the monstrosity of his being to do just that. That entire visiting school gained a better appreciation of life.
Erika being visibly physically impacted by Brennan's character and delivery will never get old. They are good friends, and nothing will ever happen, very clear divide between character and player, but she gets FERAL for these performances.
Aabria's face journey when Brennan says "What do you want me to tell your family?" is pure gold. Like she was entertainingly knocked off balance there and it was visible.
I'm amazed I dont see more comments on how perfect Aabria kept the flow. She was working with some talented people and knew when to step in a away and sort of ebb and flow for a awesome visual experience. I'd like her to be a GM sometime again.
Misfits and Magic was THE reason why I have a dropout account. This was a phenomenal campaign. I absolutely loved the characters, their growth, and this scene was hands down my favorite RP so far in any campaign I've ever watched. Best day and a half binging this campaign.

Like you said bending rules to preserve the narrative is important. But it's just if you're gonna hype up the brutality you better honor it. Especially since this is a core mechanic of the system they're showing off.
This is what happens when DM's come out from behind the screen. You get a guy who is used to portraying a hundred people now putting all of their effort into a single character. And shit. Gets. WILD.
Orion Black does point out (partially rightfully) that his character kind of falls into the "White Guy Protagonist" role in the story though it's clearly not Brennan's intention to do so.
It tells you something about how used I have gotten to occasionally very subtle differences in Brennan's voice to indicate different characters that when he says "I disavow you" my brain went "Huh, sounds like Tracker."
Needs to be in the round table of blac kair force activity. Right before a threat of a person's life the other person takes off their robe and folding it then goes to threaten.
I love how Brennan in this particular moment, literally showed this kid the errors of his choices, before he even made them. He’s like “I’m giving you one last chance, this is what will happen should you choose this course of action.” And sends him to the underworld like what?! Jesus.
#FORPRESTIGE!? Evan doesn't care about those sort of things, like money etc. It's hard to understand. He does care about survival. These magical people over estimate themselves and underestimate the values he has, to their own detriment.
What’s real interesting is if you straight up kill someone? Game says your character is done. Character becomes NPC as your arrested/ kicked out of school.
Judging from the amount of glee Aabria seems to get from trying to get Brennan to kill someone, I feel like Evan would just end up adopted by the cult he hates.
it only applies if it doesn't happen in self defense. it is accepted that people can die in this tournament and they have no rules. highly doubt him becoming an npc was on the tables
as the GM i'd have ruled that because this was a sporting event Shit happens (if while in a sporting event actions you take result in somones death unless they can prove you went in intending to kill them it's not legally murder ESP if the sport in question is a combat sport like wresteling judo or boxing)
This is my first time ever seeing a clip from this show, and I am now convinced this man would end my career in the blink of an eye. He scared that lad so bad he had to entirely reconsider every life choice he’d made up to that point. That’s hardcore, and I respect it.
Anyone else notice Evan fully admit that he doesn't care about human life? "I'm really trying, and it's a LOT of effort...you guys make it easy." This after the the other students had reassured him that they could control and contain him if he ever went too far. It's actually frightening to imagine where Evan would have ended up if not for his friends.
I think it's less about not caring about human life... it's more about the world he has lived in, never gave even a minimum wage priced F*** about him, and he was always okay with, just not being anymore. In his mind, probably better for everyone, including him. BUT, his... everything else inside him, created his circumstances. Avoiding conflict as Evan is only so effective. How many times have random encounters ended in.... well trauma for everyone that survives? After a while... if you can't avoid it... and you warn them... the blood of some exploded or whatever horrifying outcome on your hands seems less meaningful... especially when he himself is saunted by those same forces, not just from actions in self defense but just simply trying to exist and not being in control.
In one of the talkbacks after the show that they do for these, they talk about how the 4 of them basically all decided to play the worst possible candidates for a magical school and decided on an influencer, a tumblr stan, a jock, and a nascent dark lord.
I have watched a lot of hours of Brennan making shit up and after seeing this scene first, I thought, "oh, so the dude's been holding _back_ this entire time. cool. cool. this is why he's hardly ever allowed to be a PC" lmao
I love when i do that Talking Fast intimidation or persuasion in DnD. It never fails to fluster the DM and i've been watching Aaron Sorkin shows all my life to ready myself for it

I'm new to this system. Did his grit role earn him any sort of mechanical advantage? I feel like the end-all-be-all of intimidation monologues went unrewarded.
It changed what the kids intention was. I'm sure that the first spell was up to Aabria, but when he made the roll, the kid changed his plan. Defense, or hesitation, something. Alternatively, the kid could have moved faster and hit Evan with an offensive spell instead.
I had the same thought, like clearly that got bulldozed over because the dm felt it would be anti climatic, but it does the opposite. Felt like the player built a charcter and then put effort into a play style, only to get told “yes but actually no”
I have watched this clip so many times and the devolution from "What do you want me to tell your family?" leading up to "Make a grit roll, it's not even that high, it's like a seven" just sends me every time.
But then it didn't matter, she ignored the fact that he succeeded. Then it almost felt like she got weirdly upset at him for succeeding, and actively tried to punish him.
I got a month of dropout just to see this show and I'm so glad I did this was some of the most fun I had watching D&D. An absolute blast and I love the system they used I don't remember what it's called but I think I'll adopt it into my own homebrew campaigns.
I dunno why I only found out about this stream today but I watched it all and this is single handed my the most hilarious, intimidating, horrifying back to hilarious roller coaster ride I've seen in a long ass time from the "mess with with the goat, get the horns" to " oh good you speak english" to the spell used back to "NEED I SAY GOAT HOUSE? YOU NEED NOT" I absolutely love the interactions brenan has thought this run

@GenericDPS 100% recommend continuing the subscription to catch Fantasy High (and it's spinoffs). It's like this, but more D&D and less Harry Potter.

It seems pretty likely that Evan's opponent could have fucked himself up in some other duel later on. With this, one less idiot throws their life away for the sake of honor. It almost seems like Evan is tapping into his monstrosity to do something that results in a net positive.

@@or9422 That's a fair assessment. The tone of the series was very much a "accept yourself for who you are and use it to bring positive change". In this moment, knowing that they HAD to win the tournament for plot reasons (won't go into spoilers), he was very much tapping into the monstrosity of his being to do just that. That entire visiting school gained a better appreciation of life.

Misfits and Magic was THE reason why I have a dropout account. This was a phenomenal campaign. I absolutely loved the characters, their growth, and this scene was hands down my favorite RP so far in any campaign I've ever watched. Best day and a half binging this campaign.

Like you said bending rules to preserve the narrative is important. But it's just if you're gonna hype up the brutality you better honor it. Especially since this is a core mechanic of the system they're showing off.

Orion Black does point out (partially rightfully) that his character kind of falls into the "White Guy Protagonist" role in the story though it's clearly not Brennan's intention to do so.
It tells you something about how used I have gotten to occasionally very subtle differences in Brennan's voice to indicate different characters that when he says "I disavow you" my brain went "Huh, sounds like Tracker."

What’s real interesting is if you straight up kill someone? Game says your character is done. Character becomes NPC as your arrested/ kicked out of school.
Judging from the amount of glee Aabria seems to get from trying to get Brennan to kill someone, I feel like Evan would just end up adopted by the cult he hates.

as the GM i'd have ruled that because this was a sporting event Shit happens (if while in a sporting event actions you take result in somones death unless they can prove you went in intending to kill them it's not legally murder ESP if the sport in question is a combat sport like wresteling judo or boxing)

Anyone else notice Evan fully admit that he doesn't care about human life? "I'm really trying, and it's a LOT of effort...you guys make it easy." This after the the other students had reassured him that they could control and contain him if he ever went too far. It's actually frightening to imagine where Evan would have ended up if not for his friends.
I think it's less about not caring about human life... it's more about the world he has lived in, never gave even a minimum wage priced F*** about him, and he was always okay with, just not being anymore. In his mind, probably better for everyone, including him. BUT, his... everything else inside him, created his circumstances. Avoiding conflict as Evan is only so effective. How many times have random encounters ended in.... well trauma for everyone that survives?
After a while... if you can't avoid it... and you warn them... the blood of some exploded or whatever horrifying outcome on your hands seems less meaningful... especially when he himself is saunted by those same forces, not just from actions in self defense but just simply trying to exist and not being in control.
All the times of Brennan playing the bad guys when he’s a DM is just channeled through Evan Kelmp.
In one of the talkbacks after the show that they do for these, they talk about how the 4 of them basically all decided to play the worst possible candidates for a magical school and decided on an influencer, a tumblr stan, a jock, and a nascent dark lord.

I love how Dream needs to "sure up the old mouth" every time Evan is either dark or soft. Erica roleplays that so well.
The roll gave the character justice. It was literally an epic moment and an epic character.
It was really cool to see Brennan as a PC. I hope they get another season of this but the way it wrapped up felt like too much closure for a season 2.

I'm new to this system. Did his grit role earn him any sort of mechanical advantage? I feel like the end-all-be-all of intimidation monologues went unrewarded.
Honestly don't know. I'm pretty sure Aabria just didn't want to let him get away with not even trying to fight this kid.
It changed what the kids intention was. I'm sure that the first spell was up to Aabria, but when he made the roll, the kid changed his plan. Defense, or hesitation, something. Alternatively, the kid could have moved faster and hit Evan with an offensive spell instead.
I assume the grit roll was enough to intimidate, but he would have needed to beat the DC by more to get the kid to give up.

I had the same thought, like clearly that got bulldozed over because the dm felt it would be anti climatic, but it does the opposite. Felt like the player built a charcter and then put effort into a play style, only to get told “yes but actually no”

I got a month of dropout just to see this show and I'm so glad I did this was some of the most fun I had watching D&D. An absolute blast and I love the system they used I don't remember what it's called but I think I'll adopt it into my own homebrew campaigns.

I dunno why I only found out about this stream today but I watched it all and this is single handed my the most hilarious, intimidating, horrifying back to hilarious roller coaster ride I've seen in a long ass time from the "mess with with the goat, get the horns" to " oh good you speak english" to the spell used back to "NEED I SAY GOAT HOUSE? YOU NEED NOT" I absolutely love the interactions brenan has thought this run
