Velites we are told by Polybius had a round shield or 'parma,' which 3 feet in diameter or much larger. As for painting, the legionarii were par excellence Roman citizens so wore the normal garb of white tunica (no uniforms) only the consul had a red cloak and he like the cavalry had white tunics with a purple stripe (denoting the equestrian order). Probably the oval infantry shields (scuta) were faced in white. At Cannae the Spanish troops of Hannibal who were accoutred thus resembled the Romans. The cavalry had dark brown, almost black, cloaks (except for the consul who alone wore red). About shield devices at this time next to nothing is known, as they are never mentioned they may not have existed

I agree with you. In addition the breast plate may have been round, a span in diameter ("a span of a hand all around" literally translated) and not square like in these minis. It's still a matter of debate according to the different interpretation of the sources and modern translation.

Defiantly look like something I might convert for my Kings of War undead army. Nothing like an undead roman legion ;)

Having a lot of left over zombie parts I'm very much liking this idea.

The "musician" is kinda like the radio man, he sounds the horn in various patterns to signal the troops.

Question about the infantry sprues ... It appears that there are enough arm options to equip each figure with spears/pila. But are there enough arm options available to equip each figure with swords? Thanks

    Nice review,
guessing that besides the Velites the bodies all have standard a sheathed Gladius? would make it easier if u want to make/convert some Principes.
